CORONER'S JURY EXONERATES
; YOUNG MAN FROM MURDER
TOWNSKXT), Yn.h., Dec. 4. Hume
ITaJin, son of a rancher living near here,
was "exonerated by a coroner's jury to
day from all Maine, in connection with
the death of Mark Amnednu yesterday.

j FEDERAL PROSECUTION HAS
NOT HURT TOBACCO TRUST
-EV YORK, Dee. 4. That the fed
eral prosecution has not affected the
'profits of the American Tobacco com
pany was shown today by the payment,
in addition to the regular quarterly
dividend of 24 per cent, of an extra
dividend of 7i per cent, making the
total dividend of 10 per cent paid on
the common stock of this company.
Tu this quarter of last year the di
rectors of the American Tobacco com
pany declared in addition to the regu
lar quarterly dividend of 24 per cent
an extra dividend of 2-j per cent, mak
ing tho total for the year 25 per cent.
The extra payment for this year brings
the total dividends to be disbursed this
year up to 321 por cent.
The payment of tho regular and ex
tra dividends today will call for .$4,-$-2J,424
and when this has been paid
the holders of tho common stock of the
American Tobacco company will have
received for 190S in dividends $13,
07S.780. Wall street formed the opin
ion when tho disbursement was an
nounced that 10 per cent would be made
the regular rate for this quarter, and
that in the coining year tho dividend
would be brought up to 40 per cent. '

SOUTHERN PACIFIC TO BE
TAXED IN FULL IN KENTUCKY
FRANKFORT, Ky , Dec. 4. The
Kentucky state fiscal court has direct
ed the stato board of valuation and
assessment to reassemble and assess the
intangible property of the Southern
Pacific railroad. This moans that the
hoard must assess tho property at $175,
iKKj.ooo instead of at $1,000,000 as has
been the custom for years. It means,
then, that tho railroad company will pay
into the state treasury taxes aggregat
ing $4,000,000. As the Southern Pacific
is a Kentucky corporation, its home of
fice being at Beechmont, a suburb of
Louisville, the case cannot bo taken to
the United States supreme court. The
railroad has no track in the city and
,it has always taken the position that
the assessment of its intangible prop
erty should be nominal. The decision
of the state supremo court, it is pre
dicted, will drive the company out of
Kent nek v.
NEW NAVY DEPARTMENT
WITH DEWEY AT ITS HEAD
WASIIIXGTOX, D. C, Dec. 4. The
elevation of Admiral George Dewey to
a position in the navy department

Navy Truman II. Newberry, is predicted

personnel, matters of construction, and

The plot which the authorities believe
they have frustrated, was only ono of .i
a net work of conspiracies looking to
ward the murder of all liritish officials
and the driving of nil white residents
form India. As fast, ns the coimpirators
tiro discovered they are being hurried
to prison, given speedy trials ami are
promptly executed.
