The Kentucky state fiscal court has direct ed the stato board of valuation and assessment to reassemble and assess the intangible property of the Southern Pacific railroad. This moans that the hoard must assess tho property at $175, iKKj.ooo instead of at $1,000,000 as has been the custom for years. It means, then, that tho railroad company will pay into the state treasury taxes aggregat ing $4,000,000. As the Southern Pacific is a Kentucky corporation, its home of fice being at Beechmont, a suburb of Louisville, the case cannot bo taken to the United States supreme court. The railroad has no track in the city and ,it has always taken the position that the assessment of its intangible prop erty should be nominal. The decision of the state supremo court, it is pre dicted, will drive the company out of Kent nek v. NEW NAVY DEPARTMENT WITH DEWEY AT ITS HEAD WASIIIXGTOX, D. C, Dec. 4.
