MED FORD DAILY TRIBUNE, MEDPORD, OliKUOX, MONDAY. (X TO II Kit 5. 1!HK KLAMATH FOR DRAIER ROAD Chamber of Commerce In vites SgoU to County to flolMooa Roads Meeting KLAMATH FALLS, Or., Oct. fi The chamber of commerce at n ri;t?oiit meeting unanimously passed a resolu tion, instructing the seoretury to issue an invitatiou to Judge John U. Scott, prasideut of the Oregon good roads commission, to visit Klamath Falls for the , purpose of holding a good roads convention here. No time was set for the convention, but the date will be ar ranged to moot the convenience of Judge Scott, who has engagements in other parts of the state. It has been said that Oregon has gone good roads mad, but it simply means that the farm era and rural residents have united and are demanding the same rights aud eon veniences which have long been inono olized by the people of the cities. Grater Lake Road. The matter of the construction of the Crater lako road was taken up and met with the hearty approval of the mem bers. The building of this road is eon sidered to be t he enteri ng wedge o t the work to be Inaugurated in Oregon. Jackson county has promised to con tribute $50,000 and the assistnnco of the state has been promised, and now Klamath county is expected to give an am out equal to Jackson. .Will U. Steel, who has been talk ing Crater lake for the past years, was present and gave a very interest -ing discission on the advantages of the road. Mr. Steel has always been an en thusiast on Klamath 's great wonder, and it was -through his efforts tli:tt Governor Chamberlain was induced to visit tho lako this summer and t here by become a convert, and is now using his vast influence in encouraging t In building of this road. Taxes Needed. Qeorgo T. Baldwin, viee-presideint oi the Crater lake road commission, also spoke in behalf of a good mails eon vention which would tend to interest the poop'o of this county in doing their share toward the building of the road. Judge En M win Mated that the amount eould be raised ivH hout hardly being felt by t!o taxpayers. A special road tax of 3!! mills for two years would be sufficient to raise the required amount. The low allows a ten mi!! tax and n five mill tax would bo enough for the Crater lako road and the pros out work on the county roads. Me dwelt on the small amount that Khun ath county would hnve to put up to secure a total expenditure of h:ill" :i million dollars in this section. Fully o'je Volf of this total amount would In p?nt within the borders of Klamath enunty, and would go into the poeketsj of the fnrmers and working men. TOURIST 'TRAVEL TO CRATER LAKE AT AN END KLAMATH FALLS. Or.. Oct. r. -Will G. Steel, O. V. Woodbury, .lames Mongol d and Clyde Huffman hnve !(' this city for Crater lake. The tmirist season ftt the lake is praetieally over, as there is already some snow there, and it is getting too cold for travel. Engineer Huffman and Mr. Mongidd will take, the launches off the lake and store them away for the winter. The camps will be packed up and move. I and Steel's Crater Lake hotel will be no more until next year. There has been an immense travel tn the lake this year. NEW LUMBER RATES OUT AT END OF THIS WEEK Copies of the new lumber tariff will bo received by the freight department in Portland of the Harriman lines tin latter part of this week, showing the new rates on lumber that have been pre ".pared by the general freight depart ment in accordance with t he decision of the interstate commerce commission in the lumber rate cases. The new cast and west bound trnn continental tariffs will lie ready for dis tribution by the railroads in 15 days. NEVADA PEAR GROWERS CLEAR 30 CENTS ON FRUIT ORASS VALLEY,, Cnl.. Oct. .. TVs .pit the glut of the eastern fruit mar ket, growers in this section will prac tically nil end the season with a profit. When the first shipments were made from this county it was feared that the ronsigners would tmffer a heavy lost, but such has not proved to be the case. While the profits will not be anything likfl last year's, they will range from 30 to 40 cents clear per box on Itartb-tt pflrs, tho chief fruit crop of the county. PLAN8 FOR CARNIVAL ARE COMPLETE IN KLAMATH FALLS KLAMATH FALLS. Or., n.-t. -Preparations are completed for Khun ath Falls' first street carnival, which will be held from October 12 to IT. (c) Our pipeline will bo from six to eight i iii lies larger than the gravity line and will carry more water, which simuld be considered in comparing cost. (d) The submission of both phms to a eontnu t would demonstrate which is t he cheaper plan. Fifth If a gravity system is adopt ed and operated by the city, then the operating expenses aud bond interest and sinking fund must be paid from the revenue or the rates raised by the city council. Sixth ! f our proposition is accept ed and the water system operated by us. theu the operating expenses, bond interest and sinking fund must be paid i rom the revenue or the rates raised sufficient ly by t lie city council. Seventh Our profits from pumping, if any, tho only diffeivnro between the two plans, we idaim must be made by good mimical management, which with our cheap power facilities and to the fact that we are already operat ing the electric light system, we claim hint we can give. Compare the revenue and free lights the city is now getting under our man agement of the electric light plant, with t he loss and poor service under city management. Kighth If the city becomes L'5.000 population, theu it will grow larger and water then would have to be obtained from h'ogiie river.
