MEDFQRD DAILY TRIliUNlS, MEDFORU, OUFAIOX, SATURDAY, )(TOHI li :il.00S. TEDDY STANDS BY HITCHCOCK I! Any Republicans Object R86veltWill Give Them rfcee of His Mind WASHINGTON, Oct. 3. Republican politicians are discussing tuilnv a sitie- meat piven out lit the White House lust night in which it was said that Presi dent Roosevelt endorses the. Hitchcock management of the Taft campaign and calls on republicans to give the repub lican campaign manager their earnest support. The Hitchcock situation was discuss ed at a cabinet meeting yesterday and it is stated that the president wnxtd warm when informed of the rumors that he had been behind a movement to dis credit Hitchcock. He is said to have expressed himself strongly on the sub ject "and declared that he would give any republicans who come to the White House with criticism of 11 itchcock n piece of his find on the subject. Did Not Send for Hitchcock. The president stated that he had iml called Hitchcock to Washington, but that if the republican manager wanted to comor he would be glad to reeeive him and converse. It is rumored here today that tin- president sent Secretary Hoot to Ne York to ascertain the trouble with the Taft campaign and that Knot reported that the trouble lay with Treasurer George 1(. Sheldon. It is stated that the president and Taft objected to the collect iou of funds from some of t In corporations with which Sheldon is nl lied and that others had stated Sheldon did not get enough money. Thf ai-iiniis of the present administra tion hus r.'veli'd one usri'ul fart, uot withsiandiiii it has ai-eoiuplished not li ng in I lie great campaign of the peo ple ayain-,1 the trusts. W all know th;it Woosevt-lt is by !i:!tir a reformer, and being that, he must necessarily be of a high moral . liai.i.-ter. Thus when lie became by accident and force of circumstances. pre-hb ur nf the 1 ni ted States, his true character asserted itself and he bngun doing thiugse. The greatest thin; his actions have resulted in, how ever, was to reveal to the people that the application of the law is not a rem "dy, but that the law in its action is but a check to slop growth until a remedy can be applied. In other words, the politician applies the law for prac tically the same reasons that a physi cian gives his patient his first dose of medicine. To check the uroirress of th disease until lie can diagnose the case and find t lie cause. The pry si -ciau who cannot direct his attacks upon the cause of :i disease cannot cure the disease. That is evident. So with Mr. Koosevelt. lie applied the law a ad he checked the trusts, but he found himself in a party which hold no rem edy and the trusts won as the disease wins out against the physician. If you want to kill the trusts, it is right to apply t lie law which stops growth, but if yon have no remedy to destroy the principle that creates trusts the law avails not hing. However, at this point we can all agree that Mr. Koosevelt made no greater mistakes in applying the law under circumstance' where there was no remedy than did1 thi- republican party in putting a man a reformer, so contrary to their prin ciples, in line with such office. The salvation of the people depends, there fore, upon two things: Virst, the man of right character; second, the party with right principles or methods. Without this combination nothing substantial can be done. Tint twice in our national life has t lie rule been given back to the people. They could not keep it. I'irst. (Jeorge Washington wrestled the scepter from the king and gave it to the people absolutely, (ieorge Wash ingtoii and his party, however, were synonym-Mis. Washington made the par ty and the party made him. and only with the character of the man at the helm and the party policies are alike can such a condition as Washington cre ated obtain (I Second, in this category comes our great lincoln, but tho par ty adopted Lincoln. The character of t!i - man and party methods were not in unison, under which circumstances the best that Lliis great and good man could do for the people he so loved was to create : iditton in our national life which had to be reasonably settled be fore the "money glands" could right ly bein to secrete. He freed the slaves. Lincoln knew that his work was but temporary. That his blow, crippling as it was, did not strike the root. Apropos of which he said: "I see a cloud gathering in our mills! that unnerves me and makes me tremble and fear for our national life, more t lia u any circumstances of the civil war." His great vision had sighted the money power of today. Three days later Lincoln was shot. lie had made a mistake. He nveiled his plans to the eneniv. Methodist Episcopal Church. B Street.
