She declares that the most uselei., brtinless and purposeless order of things in the world constitute the elite of society in this country. "There is no occasion for brain, and consequently girls don't cultivate their capabilities," asserts Miss Uarry niore. "If you can join gracefully in the inanities of an ordinary dinner table, you '11 puss muster; but if you should happen to touch on anything that the real men of our coun try are doing, you would be shunned as a frightful bore. "Thet women of wealth are merely selfish and piggish and are utterly content with comfortable living quarters, a good dinner, a little polo or bridge, or a rapid automo bile oi- two. They are empty shells, and-perfectly mean ingless and useless to the country. If a plague should wipe out the entire society element of New York the city would be none the worse for it, nor would they be missed. They accomplish nothing and give nothing to the world." All of which is perfectly well known to every observer given an insight into the life of the over rich smart set Society people are usually parasites that do nothing to justify existence an existence due to an imperfect civil ization, which has organized the production of wealth and left its distribution haphazard, so that the few lead empty and purposeless Jives of idleness at the expense of the overburdened many. Miss lSarrymore could have gone further in her demur nation. J he smart set is worst! than useless. It is God denying and Jaw defying, a source of moral corruption contaminating those silly and vapid enough in other walks of life to follow its lead in degeneracy. A0GFtffrcr (foes tf- WOHDY W'A It IS OVER. The wordy war between Roosevelt and Bryan, which lias highly entertained the nation Tor the past fortnight, with the refusal of the president to further answer the Nebraskan. Roosevelt's defense of trust contributions to the Taft campaign fund and his refusal to publish the list of contributors has given Bryan the best of the argument. The Nebraskan 's parting shot is a promise to enforce laws, "not spasmodically and intermittently, hut persist ently and consistently; they will not )(. suspended even for the protection of cabinet officers," and the offering of the following Bibical reason for the support of the repub lican party by trust magnates. "The ox kuoweth his own ers, and the ass his master's crib." A New York dispatch states that Wednesday "more than a thousand men and women crowded (Irand street in front of the private bank of Palowen, Magilewski & Werner, when it was learned that the doors were closed and its affairs in the hands of a receiver." Had Bryan's bank guarantee law been in effect, such scenes would not be of almost daily occurrence and tliou sands would he spared suffering. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. S. I). HuImtIh to William M. Write for program of studies, all for booklet concerning dress regulations, " In tin lust ten years' suys the Yearbook of the department of aricul til re for 110", "forestry has advanced in this country from an almost un known acienci to a useful growing pro fession. In that time the number of technically trained foresters lias in creased from Ichh than a dozen to over UiO. Ten years ago there was not a single forest selmn) in the country; now then are several professional forest sellouts which rank with those of Ku rope, and a score more with courses in elementary forestry whose usefulness is steadily growing. Forest lands un der management have grown from one or two tracts to many, aggregating 7. .VM.Oiio acres, scattered through 110 stntts. The national forests have in creased from 39,0(10,000 acres, practi cally aumiHcd and unprotected to 105, 000,000 acres, used, guarded and im proved both in productiveness and ac cessibility. The number of states which have stale forests lias increased from one to ten; and of those which employ trained foresters from none to 11. The membership of forest nssoeint ions has increased from HfiOO to 1. 1.800. Ten years ngo, except for a few of the foremost botanists, Kuropenn foresters knew more about American forests tlinn did the people of this country. In Ku rope they were then using preservatives to prolong the service of beech ties, and so adding from 20 to 40 years to their life. Here, on the other hand scarcely a trented tie had been laid, though there are now 00 treating plants, 27 of which treat ties exclusively, and an engineer who recently returned from Ku rope reports that both in sizr and me chanical perfection the treating equip meat of this country is ahead of any to lie found abroad. Ready to Work. " And vet American forestry has only safely passed the experimental stnge and got readv to do something. Action immediate and vigorous, must be taken if the inevitable famine of wood sup plies is tn lie lessened. We are now using as much wood in a single year as grows in three, with only 20 years' sup olv of virgin growth in sight. Only the application of forest knowledge with wisdom, method and energy in the next ten years can prevent the starving of national industries for lack of wood. " Kucalyptus planting has been giv en much attention in i anrornia. i no interior of one of the largest buildings 7,os Angeles wns finished in encnt vptus imported from Australia at $250 a thousand board feet. This treo grows very rapidly and is especially adapted to that region. Four companies have been formed which will plant in the aggregate several thousand acres with eucalyptus. It is with this tree that the Santa Fe railway is 'diluting "";" acres near San Diego to test its suit ability for the production of ties. "Prominent among the projects car ried forward by the state forester of California was the publication of n comprehensive bulletin on the commer ciat production of eucalyptus. Preser vative treatments of cedar, pine and fir ties and poles, conducted in coop oration with the forest service at Los Angeles, showed that n 40 foot polo, worth $7.50, con be preserved With cre osote at a cost of $2 so as to secure additional service worth several times the additional cost. The state fire pa trol was materially strengthened. Progress of Work. "The progress of forest work in Washington for the past year is espec ially marked by increased activity on the part of the stnte and owners of timber lands to protect the timber from fire; the inauguration of forest in struction at the university nnd at the agricultural college at Pullman; and the better appreciation by the people of the nationnl forest policy. The work of the deputy firo wardens in the several counties of the state entirely prevented dost met ive timber fires. About 100 forest rangers were appointed, usually at the request of mill men ami timber land owners by whom they were em ployed. At a meeting of prominent lumbermen in Seattle n ranger service v as organized for the fire season of IVOS. This organization represents some 4,000,000 acres of timber land, and it i the plan to acfl holdings at the rate of 1 crnt an acre for fire protec tion. Other timber holders of the state are doing something in th same line. (He company, for example, has a force of rsei i the Held which is ns of fee tive as Ike itate force." We always find a desirable tenant before a good building has been "to let" more than 24 hours, and land owners know we can always find a purchaser if a reasonable valuation is put on property.
