1 aV THE MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 1908. YOUNG HEN LEADPARTIES Old-Timers Resent Selec tion of Ollie James and Frank Hitchcock KEEPS HER HUSBAND ON THE BLACK LIST WASHINGTON', July 22. The old politician in WtwhiuBton, with the glory of miiny campaign fights upon them, are more than vexed at tlie eutl beiug given young men in the choice' of leaden for the approaching presi dential contest. It is awful, they think. The probability of the Heleetion of OW'w James, the big Kentucky con gressman, to manage the campaign for William Jennings Bryan has added to their irritation over the selection f Frank H. Hitchcock as chairman of the Republican national committee. Old men do not have a chance these days, they say. 1 Little More Than Kids. They point out that James is but lit- j tie more than u kid. The truth Is that he would be the youngest eumpaigu man- j ager ever selected by a big politionl : party. He is only 37 years old, but,i due to the uncertainty of Democratic victory in Kentucky, he has had a finger in nearly every political campaign in that state since he appeared ou the ter restiul scene, and during the last few presidential contests he has made a reputation for himself in a subordinate capacity. They enlist their followers in their babyhood in the Uiuo (truss state and the result is tho production of a precocious politician, when the sub ject can stand tho strain. Friends of James are fond of refer ring to his congressional career. He i now serving his third term, and at the last election a Republican could not be found to run ngainst him. As a re suit lie had 10,(hhi majority out of 14, (Rill votes cast, Homo 2,000 voting for the Prohibition candidate. Incidental ly, it is noted that James has never ueen a drawing card among the prohibi tionists, althouga the Keutuckian has grasped every opportunity in congress to talk for prohibition. James1 Rapid Rise. The brilliancy of James is pointed out by hiB rapid rise from page of the Ken tuckion legislature in -the session of 1887 to his present position. In tluft year Ben Johnson was speaker of the house. Yet James hail been in congress for two sessions before Johnson rose to the height of commanding a seat in the lower house of the national law-making body. James won attention as one of the attorneys for Governor (ioebel in his celebrated contest for governor of the state of Kentucky, just before his as sassination at the state house. Hitchcock is several years older than James, yet Hitchcock, at 41, iH counted a young man. They are opposite types. Calm, reserved und not tho least talk ative, Hitchcock stands out in contrast wit a the fuss and feathers, radicalism and talkativeness of the Kentuckian. But the latter has been able to deliver the goods quite us successfully us the Republican chairman. An amusing case of a political and domestic mix up comes from Emporia, Ka. It gives nu inkling as to how woman 's suffrage might work. The editor of tho Emporia Times is Mrs. Mary McCreary Parkmau. She is a loyal democrat and has served two terms as county superintendent. Her husband is Harrison Parkmau, republi can county surveyor, and candidate for rt nomination. It is one of the rules of the Times office that Mr. Parkmau 's :ime shall not appear in the paper. When a news item requires mention of him he appears as the "county sur- evor. This poliev of blacklisting her husband in the town has created much comment, and, in her own de feuse, Mrs. Parkmau printed the follow ing editorial: We have been asked frequently why keep our husbaud on the blacklist iu the Emporia Tunes. Now, ordina rily, what we do with our husband is our own business. And it would seem iu nil fairness that if wu put uu with this man morning, noou ami night we shouldn't havo to be putting him in the paper all the tune, e and our husbaud, like all married people, have our agreements ami our disagreements. We agree ou literature, religion, art, the nebular hypothesis, the proper method of poking the fire, the value breakfast food as a brum builder, paving, municipal ownership and the fuels iu the Guuuess case. But we dis agree on politics. Wo think our hus band has a good deal of sense for a mere man ou lots of subjects; but ou polities he doesn't know inui-li. He is republican a black republican, and as such has no claims on us either ns moulder of public opinion, as a fel low citizen, or as a wife. We will conk fur our husband, we will darn and brush for him, and keep him up us out husband. But as an office-holder of vile, venal and corrupt organization, in ennsarry ol Wall street and as an oppressor of the poor, our husband has only our unspeakable contempt. He should thank his lucky stars that we do keep his name out of the Times. Could Defeat Him Easily. We know enough of our husband. .ton Id he attempt to press this matter too far, to make his vote in this elec tion little more than scattering. But up to the present we hav said nothing. We nave believed that our duty as a wife had some claims ou our dut v as an ditor. But a word to wise should be suf fie lent, and if our husband has learned a lick of sense from past ex periences with us, he will take a grand immortal tumble to himself and call off his dogs. This newspaper is a free and uutramiiieled organ of special priv- leges to none and equal rights to all, und if our husband thinks he belongs to the privileged classes he is mighty badlv fooled. "We think n good bit of our hus baud, first and last, and iu one way and another, but we will permit no fool ishness from this republican county sur eyor. He is a bad lot, and we with hold certain matters in this affair, ou account of the respectability of the par ties concerned." Ex. Captain Baldwin's dirigible balloon, which he has built according to army specifications, has been shipped and is being assembled. In a few days it will be put through the paces prescribed by the signal corps. It is not built on so large a scale as the Zeppelin dirigible l.or is it expected to establish a record for air craft. Yet the trials, if success ful, will be important as marking the beginning of a period of development of nir navigation by the army. Next month the Herring and Wright :ieroplaues will be tried out under the most exacting conditions. 1 hese trial (lights are expected to be the longest at luiiicd, the specifications calling-for a machine that will remain iu the air for an hour.
