( Kast Oregon ian, PeiidMon. Or.; It i to x: niowrely hutd ttint the voter of OregoD s 1 Inivtmity of Oregon appropriation bill at the eoniinif election. The hill will b on the official ballot for a referendum vote Oregon cannot afford to have it aiii that vhe refilled to btiihl up le-r tttate iiniveriitv. She cannot afford to drive her young men orl women to Wash jug ton and Idnho to seen re a bighei t-d neat ion. I'nton Kepiibliean, Feb. 1: Among the referendum bill that frill eome lx-fun- Ihe people this spring will be on that deals with the appropriation for t In state, university at Eugene, and hH the signs are misleading it will be appro ved by an overwhelming major ity, and it is up to eastern Oregon to do its part in this matter. A state that atrarigls its educational insti tutions is a good one to get out of. and Oregon does not propose to be in that class. Inily Herald, Columbia. Mo.: In Ore gon tin referendum has been invoked by persons hostile to the Htate univer ity to tie up the appropriations for that institution. At the last general assembly of Oregon a bill was passed increasing the university appropriation from $47, to 1J.,,00. The bill had practically a unanimous vote in the general nsnemhly. -Now, however, it must, upoo petition from a number of voters, be approved at the November election. Ju the meantime, of course the university suffers. To have the people veto the legitimate appropriation hill would not only cripple high educa tio nio Oregon, but lie a blow to tin system of referendum. It is to be hoped that there will be no such result. Eugene Register: The people of Ore gon are rousing up to the fact that to striko at the state university is to wound he slate in a vital spot and in flict au injury from which it will take yearn to recover. Nothing would giv Oregon a blacker eye with intending homeseekers all over the Cm. .11 than foi the voters to any they are opposed to higher education. If eople who livi in Oregon, or come to this state, havi to send their sons and daughters to out side universities in order to give them a complete education. Ihey will be di potted lo move to the states where sue) means of cduentiou are upheld with pride by the M-ople. To carry th, referendum against the slate iir.iv.riU will be Ihe beginning of n genera' movement against all forms of adauc ed education, finally resulting in elirn ination of nil but public schools. II Oregon should become the only slat) in the I'nion without a state univer sity, it would Ih the one state held ii to worn by the whole civilized world as the spot on the Pn.ifir coait tr stay away from as they would evd a land infested with the plagii.
