To convict Hall a dozen or so defend ant secured freedom from prosecu tion for turning traitor to the man who had shielded them from previous prose cution. A dozen confessed perjurers ami law-breaker are bribed by immu nity promises to betray their partner in guilt, it is a high price to pay for one conviction to let a dozen escape, yet tho conviction could not be obtained otherwise, ami so perhaps the end jus tifies the means. In Oregon fault is found with Mr. Heney for letting big business men es cape to punish politicians. In Califor nia, fault is found because he let the politicians escape to punish the big bus iness men. No matter what course he pursues to obtain conviction, the same crowd will find fault. What has been the net result of these land-fraud prosecutions? PLANS BIRD RESERVATION FOR SOUTHERN OREGON The Jacksonville J'ost Itus the proud distinction of being the one newspaper in Oregon that has championed Judge JIanna'-s ruling in the Putnam libel case, the one paper which has failed to grasp the significance of the ruling as an at tack upon the freedom of the press. Following its policy of (j noting from the unprejudiced press of other places, rather than commenting upon a case where the Tribune's personal interest is ho great, the following reply to the Post is reprinted from the Sacramento (Cut.) IJee, iii f the ablest edited papers of 'alil'ornia: "When the rights of the press and of American citizenship are invaded, it happens only too often that men and journals who may not like the man or the journal at the stake will not only applaud the injustice and the infamy, but will help pile on the fagots. "The Jacksonville (Or.) Post comes to the championship of Judge Hanna of Jackson county, Oregon, in his very re marknhle attitude in the recent case of the Med ford Tribune, which was com mented upon a number of days ago in this paier. The factH are briefly these: The grand jury of Jackson county re fused to indict one W, S. llarnurn, pres ident of the Kogue Itiver railroad, for nn Attempt to brain Mayor J. V. Thereupon Kditor Putnam of the Medford Tribune strenuously denounced the grand jurv and the deputy district attorney and the hitler hail the grand jury indict the editor for criminal libel for this lan guage: "Mint any one can try to brain a mini with an ax and secure immunity from the blindfolded inisn-prescntatives of just ice. It is a well-known fact among those who are acquainted with motion pic tures that there is no machine which can give pictures epial to those of the Cameragraph, either in clearness or steadiness. The Cameragraph picturea are so steady and jwrfeet that it is a positive pleasure to watch them. There is none of that flicker which gives you a headache when you have watched the Kdison and other pictures for some time. The Cameragraph will be used to pro ject the pictures on the screen in the Opera House, Tuesday evening, Febru ary 11. The pictures will be rather larger than life-size, and it will appear that the characters are actually acting on the stage.
