and reports come from every quarter
that the contestants are rising nobly to
the cause and the race will be fought
good-naturedly to the end.
The Double-Vote Offer
Which opened yesterday morning and
closes Wednesday, February 1- at S
p. in., will show a big change in the
standings of a large number of the con
testants. On the last night of the eon
test, if you find (ourself a loser by
just a few thousand votes you will be
Surry that you did not take more nil
vantage of the six days of the double
vote offer.
Gather in Your Promises.
Have you any promises of subscrip
tions f If so, when do you expect to get
them? You had better put forth your
best efforts this week and get them all
in, for you will not net as many votes
later on as you do now.
Some of the contestants have heard
it rumored that there will be more votes
given later on in the contest than are
given this week. This rumor is with
out foundation whatever, for it is KM
l'MATM'AIJ.V stated by hte contest
management that you will not be given
any more votes on subscript ions later
on than are given at the present time.
Some Changes.
Have taken place in the different dis

paring considerable of a surprise for

to become very exciting.
Miss Kffie Crimes, in histrict Xo. 4,
takes first place from Miss .l-eiinie
hewis of Central Point, who has held
it for the past two or three days. How
ever, we would not advise Miss Crimes
to rest on her oars now. as there are
several energetic candidates in this dis
trict who claim that they are to be sat

at the close of the contest.
In District No. Miss Mabelle Par

which netted him 111 er box on

price than the extra fancy sizes. This
shipment of one extra large car. com

55 trees and netted the grower $1711.50,

WANT TO CONTINUE ON
ASHLAND COAL MINE
At a meeting of the stockholders of
the Ashland Coal company and others
interested in developing the coal pros
pects of this vicinity, held at the Com
mercial club moms, Tuesday eveiiinb,
arrangements were made to push opera
tions at the company's property east of
the city with renewed energy. After
two shafts had been sunk and a tunnel
run upon the property, active working
operations were temporarily suspended
recently, states the Ashland Tidings.
Now work will be begun at once upon
a shaft which will connect the tunnel
at the lower level with the main shaft,
a distance of about loO feet. This will
drain water from the upper workings
and enable further work to be carried
on to advantage.
The coal veins already developed are)
tpiito encouraging and coal for fuel al
the mine and for market will be taken
out from the outlet as the development
work proceeds.
