Among tbe Jacksonville Odd Fel lows who were at Talent Saturday to assist In Instituting a new Odd Fellows lodge at the latter place were Messrs. Silas J. The Initiatory de gree was put on by tbe Jacksonville lodge, Mr. and Mrs, J. Trembreth, who have been residents of Jacksonville for the past two years, left Saturday for Redding. Hurst of Aurora, Or., was In Jacksonville Saturday on business connected with the guardianship of Roy Berry and Percy Berry, minor t. J. D. The wires for the electric lights at Talent and along tbe county road are being strung tbls week. C. W. Wolters of Talent Is having a barber shop erected adjoining the Jewelry store. N. 8. Bennett of Eden Valley was In North Talent last week delivering fruit trees. There are several families In this locality who have come from the dry, unlrrlgated portlona of Okla homa, and they think the artesian wells at Talent are next to the river of pure water that came up In the Garden of Eden. . Mrs. Zemlma Rose and her daugh ter, Mrs. A. S. Furry, were Medford visitors Monday. Several of North Talent's people were trading in Medford Monday. Mrs. Weeks and her daughter, Gertrude E. Weeks, will move to their new home in Medford soon. C. Carey says that a fine big deer came through his alfalfa field Tues day morning. It jumped a picket fence over eight feet high, also five other fences. In crossing lots, all of which he cleared with ease. He waa not molested and made his way on across the valley. The tract of land formerly be longing to Mrs. Martha Rapp, being a portion of the Reames estate, has been sold to real estate men from Ashland, divided Into small fruit farms and cleared-and sold. Ed Foss purchased the largest tract, which be will plant to apple and peach trees. Several of the purchasers will sow alfalfa on this, as It Is tine alfalfa land.. A number of enterprising citizens In Phoenix and North Talent and the outlying community have decid ed to form a company and erect a telephone line for local use. This Is a move In tbe right direc tion and one that will pay Its stock holders. It will supply a long-felt want to the farmers and put them In touch with Medford and with each other. It Is hoped it will be n success. John Mast, from near Medford, bought 50 head of fat hogs last Monday and will kill and make ba con of them. They were a fine lot and were purchased of Dunlap Bros, of Talent. TABLE ROCK ITEMS. (By X. Y. Z.) These cold, frosty mornings make the wood piles suffer. It seems. The school closed Friday for a hol iday vacation of one week. W. R. Byrum was In Medford Fri day disposing of a load of choice pork. H. L. Flnley spent Tuesday at his place here to oversee the work. Mr. Wykoff and Miss Blanch Col lins were In Medford recently. Miss Rose Nealon has closed her school and will spend her vacation at home. Rev. A. C. Howlett preached ct the schoolhouse 8unday to a good audience. E. H. Davis' family were in Med ford doing Christmas shopping Saturday. Mr. Connor Is expected this weiit to take possession of his property, re cently purchased from Mr. Finnl more. - S. H. Mears, Jr., has had several men at work the past week setting trees on his place. Stewart Porter leaves Wednesday to spend Christmas with his parents at Yoncalla. Rev. M. C. Davis is expected to preach here next Sunday. A good attendance Is hoped for. At a special school meeting last Tuesday a tax of 2 mills was voted to carry on the school work. Colonel R. C. Washburn and S. M. Mears, Jr.,, will spend the holidays In Portland visiting the home folks. A. W. Reld, F. A. Green and Miss Mary Reld were In Medford Satur day to purchase tbe "goodies" tor tbe Christmas tree. Mr. and Mrs. Owen Wilson vlsitel her parents, Hon. and Mrs. S. Nealon, here Sunday. Mrs. Wilson was surprised by her Sunday school class of girls calling on ber and pre senting her with a nice Bible as a wedding gift. Plans are being made for a good program to be given at the Christ mas tree Thursday evening. It Is hoped a good attendance and a merry Christmas will be bad. Our quiet neighborhood was startled to learn of a robbery In our midst. While S. M. Mears, Jr., was In Medford Saturday some party en tered his place and ransacked tbe contents, taking what they chose. Among tbe articles missing are a revolver, checks made out to differ ent parties and clothing. Suspicion points to a man recently employed by Mr. Mears, but nothing has as yet been learned of his whereabouts. KAXES CREEK ITEMS. We are sorry to say that John Brown Is suffering with a bad attack of asthma. Mr. and Mrs. Householder spent several days of last week at Medford and Ashland, combining business with pleasure. Mae Householder, accompanied by f her brother, Ralph, spent Sunday on J! Sardine creek as guests of her sister, Mrs. Dusenberry. : Peddlars, canvassers and solicitors ) are quite numerous these days, de spite the bad condition of the weather. Mrs. Rltter of Central Point was doing business In this neighborhood and Gold Hill Saturday. Bad colds and sore throats are again quite prevalent. The party Saturday night at Mr. Thompson's was a most pleasant af fair and much credit is due Mr. and Mra. Thompson as entertainers. Miss Lizzie Stallsworth Is confined to the bouse with an attack of la grippe. We are Informed that Mrs. Doane la still quite 111 at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Miner. Is employed by Mr. Bo.'.ney in building the addition to his pretty residence on North Central avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Moore left Fri day for their home near Woodville after spending a month very pleas antly with Mrs. Moore's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Buck, of North Med ford. Frank Gonlah has begun building a woodshed and other buildings for temporary use on bis two lots on tbe west side of North Central avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Adam Schmidt, or grandpa and grandma Smith, pio neer residents of Jacksonville, tar ried in the city Saturday night, the guests of their old-time friends, Mr. and Mrs. Emil De Roboam of North Central avenue, having bad a very enjoyable time. Mrs. Bern, of Bly, Wash., Is vis iting her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Turpln, of North Medford. Mr. Metz Is adding a woodshed and other outbuildings to his pretty residence property on North B street. W. J. Scott tarried In . tbe city Monday, the guest of J. G. Martin and family. Mrs. Emll De Roboam was taken suddenly 111 Sunday night at her home on North Central avenue with a severe attack of bleeding at the nose. Dr. Morrison was called. The Metz new residence on North A street Is receiving Its first coat of plaster. Miss Pearl Gould, a student of the West school. In West Medford, Is confined to her home by Impaired health. The fall term of school at Antloch closes Friday. General satisfaction has been given by the teacher. Miss Henry. Mrs. John Jones, formerly Mrs. J. Williams, has disposed of her 160 acre farm In Table Rock section. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder of Central Point were trading In the city on Tuesday. TRAIN ROIIIIKR CONFESSES. Portland Man Tells Ho v. He and Two Others Held Vp O. R. & N. PORTLAND, Or., Dec. 21. In the presence of Sheriff Stevens and dep uties and representatives of the O. R. ft N. Co. and newspaper men to night, William Burke (assumed name) of Portland, a man of about 21 years of age, confessed that e took part In the robbery of the O. R. ft N. passenger train near here Thursday night last. He Implicated Jack Hayes, alias Walton, all is "Slim," ex-convlct from Folsom, and a youth who, like Burke, lives here, whose name is withheld until his ar rest, which Is expected momentarily. Burke was arrested today. He made a confession. He said he was sorry for the part he had taken and he- cause be had been given only $1.15 as bis portion of the booty. Hayes later, according to the confession, took possession ot all the valuables secured, double-crossing the others by telling them he found nothing In the express safe. Hayes, who was arrested Sunday, had In his possession three dia monds, which be says were given to him by "Chicago Whltey," said to be a yeggman. A telegraphic descrip tion of the diamond shipped to a lo cal firm tallies with three jewels found In Hayes' possession. Hayes denies absolutely any connection with th ecrlme, but became so In volved in the maze of explanations that be lost track of bis statements and became angry and sullenly re fused to talk further. After being put In jail Burks Identified Hayes as the man who had been associated with him In the robbery. Tbe capture of tbe sus pect resulted from the discovery of a sticker dropped by one of the rob bers after leaving the scene. This was traced through Its owner to Hayes' possession. VXDER SEALED ORDERS. The Battleship Maine Has Been Sent on Some Secret Bflsslon. WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. Com plete mystery surrounds the desti nation of the battleship Malno, which left Norfolk today under sealed orders. Neither the state nor the navy department officials will make any statetment on the subject further than to say she has gon on a "cruise." They will not affirm or deny that the ship Is bound for Veu ezuelan waters. The American government Is with out any naval representative In that immediate section and should an outbreak against the existing govern ment occur such American Interests as may exist in La Guira, Porto Cabello and Maracalbo would have to appeal to the navies ot foreign nations. Po lice commissioners this afternoon an nounced that after tbe mlnuteat In vestigation they are convinced that Morris Haas obtained the derringers with which he killed himself, con cealed In bis shoe, where It bad been overlooked by Captain Duke, who searched Haas after the shooting of Heney.
