EXPERT GIVES Ti WASHINGTON, Nov. 10. KvUi existing In adulterated and fpurloui dtugs were disclosed In tbe address before the Association ul . rrirlal Ag ricultural Chemists, of In. H. H Rusby, United States arug mp rl, at the port of New York. Dr. Rusby's address was not pri marily to show that drugs are fre . quently adulterated. That was . a mere Incident to the talk which he Il lustrated at the Normandle Annex, with a series of microscopic photo graphs of plants, showing how chem ists might distlugulsh adulterated from pure compounds. Ipecac, which . generally Is given to babies, and mor phine he said, were extremely danger ous, because of their frequent poison ous adulterations. Dr. Rusby showed Ipecac as a conspicuous article of adulteration. ; Evidently there must be American aa well as foreign manufacturers who are constantly devising schemes to make bogus drugs, or, at least, to adulterate with a material less ex pensive than tbe real article, and the government expert showed by en larged photographs, taken with tbe aid of a microscope, bow certain, hairs, colors of certain spots etc.i would differentiate invariably the spurious from the genuine. The abil ity to make these discriminations, he said, could be acquired without a great deal of labor. Dr. Rusby, who, in addition to his government position, is the dean of the School of Pharmacy at Columbia college, announced that he had Just prepared a list of 125 standard drugs to be distributed to the laboratories throughout the United States where drugs are admitted from foreign countries. This list of standard drugs, together with many specimens of spurious and adulterated drugs, has been received at the bureau of chemistry. Headache Powders Injurious. The paper which led up to Dr. Rusby's address was read by I. F. Krebler of tbe department of agri culture, who showed Imported drugs in crude form to Illustrate how many ot the foreign drugs reached this country adulterated, and failed - to have the effect expected ot tbem when compounded with other drugs. He referred especially to certain headache powders, which he said con tained powerful heart depressants. In the forenoon the chemists were addressed by Secretary Wilson of the department of agriculture, who praised the work of the society. He emphasized the effect ot the chem ists' activity In aiding the enforce ment of the pure food and drug law. Plan Bill for Congress. Tbe chemists took steps to draft proposed legislation for the sanitary production and distribution of food products, to supplement the national pnre food and drugs law, which deals -only with the question of food adul teration. The bill, when drafted, will be presented to state legislatures as well as to congress.. -.,.. 'During the day the 'association adopted an amendment to the consti tution admitting Mexican and Cana dian members to full membership. At a meeting of the executive committee L. H. Tolman, E. M. Chase and Dr. B. 'T. Allen were elected councilors. The Chemical society of Washing ton entertained the association last night at the Cosmos club, addresses being made by E. E. Free, W. O. Rob inson and W. J. McCaughrey of the bureau of soils, and E. C. Monroe of George Washington university. The convention will continue Into next week. , LAWYERS ROW WITH ACH. WANTS KIDS. , Claims Right to Children. Tbe Former Hubby of Anna Gould PARIS, Nov. 20. The hearing of the suit brought by Coucr. Bonl de Castellane against Prluce Hella de Sagan for the custody of three chil dren was today postponed until No vember 25. This action waa taken at the request of Albert Clemenceau, counsel for the princess, who an nounced that be had Just entered the case, and It was consequently Impos sible for him to proceed today. Princess de Sagan waa Anna Gould of New York before she married the Count de Castellane. She secured a divorce from him, after which she married Prince Helle de Sagan. M. Bonnett, Count de Castellane's lawyer, did not oppose the request ot M. Clemenceau for postponement, but be formally petitioned the court to place the children In the care of the Marquise de Castellane, mother of Count Bonl, pending a settlement of the case, on the ground that they were uncomfortable and 111 In the house of their mother, the princess, and because It was desirable that they should escape the atmosphere, unhealthful both morally and phys ically which, he alleged, pervaded tbe home ot the mother. The court ruled that It could not pass upon the question today and tbe entire matter went over -for one week. Count de Castellane waa present in court and listened attentively as M. Bonnett set forth that the count was unable to see his children on ac count ot their Illness and that the doctor had been forbidden to send him any news ot them. "The children have need of that calm and peace which they will find In the home ot their grandmother," M. Bonnett declared. He then said that he bad agreed to various prop ositions already because he under stood that the princess had decided to seek a separation from her hus band, but Inasmuch as the princess had denied this report, he could see no reason why the suit should not proceed. The court, however, grant ed the postponement. WILL MOURN EMPEROR. Obsequies to Continue In Clilna fof Nearly a Month. PEKIX, Nov. 20. RISKS DEATH; SAVES LIFE. Spokane Man Rescues Suicide at the Brink of Falls. SPOKANE, Wash., Nov. 20. Risk ing his life to save a woman who says she wished to end hers, G. J. Heffner, member of tbe Spokane fire department, plunged Into the Spo kane river's deadliest pool, not 60 feet from tbe big falls, and brought the woman safely -to land. The limp person he deposited on the bank soon revived, although she had sunk twice, and told the men as sisting her she is Mrs. Bessie FJer- sted, wife of an employe of the coun ty treasurer's office. Despondency arising from long-continued HI health waa tbe causa ot her attempt. Her husband is kind to her, a good pro vider and baa kept a close watch on her heretofore, fearing she might try to end her life. Mrs. FJersted was crossing tbe Post-street bridge when the mania of self-destruction seised her. She climbed over tbe rail and made tbt leap of 60 or eo feet to the river be low. Heffner waa walking across the bridge In company with bis little daughter. He gave the child In keep ing of another pedestrian, dashed down the rocky bank, aheddlng coat and vest as be went, and, measuring the distance, took a header far Into the river. The water Is backed up by a dam of a power company, being dlvertel to huge Iron pipes on the south slda of (he river, and the undertow Is tre mendous. Hetfner's lite was In dan- rr every moment, and he knew It, but he grasped the nearly drowned woman, having dived again to find her, placed her body over his shoul der and made hit way to the bank. Heffner waa heartily congratulated and almost had to be torn away from the cheering crowd by the police. HARTLOVE GOES TO JAIL. Must Serve Sentence for Deserting to Marry Senator's Daughter. His parents brought him to this city for treatment at St. Joseph's hospital, where the doctors say there Is only slight hope of saving the sight ot the little ex perimenter. TOO MUCH FLIRTING. Says Censor of Morals for Glasgow University. GLASGOW, Scotland, Nov. 20. Co-education has been passiug through sharp criticisms here during the last few weeks. In this period the senate of the University of Glas gow several times has forcibly ex pressed opinion that co-education Is not working well so far aa the rela tionship of young men and young women atudenta is concerned. This relationship, tt is asserted, gradually has become merely one of 'boy and girl flirtation" and the boasted advantages of co-education In the way of the achievement of a higher grade of common sense and seriousness have not yet appeared. In order effectually to put a stop to the unwelcome ends one ot the women lecturers has been appointed as a "censor of morals," and it is ex pected that ahe will at least bring to an end the "disgraceful whispering in corridors," which seems to be, ac cording to the students themselves, the extent to which any of the flirting ever went. The censor position has been completely boycotted by the stu dents. HIGH-CLASS PAVING. Some of the Rock Used for Paving the Streets Contains Gold. Paving the streets with gold-bear ing rock! Most women never take their fig ures to bed with them. The way a girl entertains a man Is to listen to the rot he talks to her as If It were sense. It makes a woman on a railroad train awful nervous to think she Isn't dressed for a wreck. The reason a man thlnka there's a lot ot money to be made In a certain business Is he Isn't In It So many women are successful In running a house better than a man can run his business because they do It without a single theory.
