Sweeney Kills Self on Ac of Poor Health BALTIMORE. Md., Oct. 24. Wil liam N. Sweeney, a special agent of the Glens Falls (N. Y.) Fire Insur ance company for Maryland and East ern Virginia, blew out bis brains with a .32-calibe rrevolver In his office In the American building. Sweeney left behind him no letter or explanation, but it Is believed that he took bis life on account of despondency over his health and financial troubles . His family lives In Owensboro, Ky., and he was the son of ex-Judge James Sweeney, one of the leading Jurists of that state. Dr. E. B. Swee ney of the Episcopal hospital, Phila delphia, Is his brother. Sweeney had been In Baltimore for more than a year and was regarded as one of the best Insurance agents here. His body was discovered on the desk indicating that Sweeney owed more than $2000. and bis creditors were Importuning him. So far as known his accounts with the Insur. ance company are all straight. He remarked to his stenographer on Saturday that he was worried over his business affairs and the wretched state of his health, and that If there was not some Improvement In both Immediately he would end his life. ROGERS' RAILROAD HORRY. He Has Put $.10,000,000 of His Own Money Into the Virginian. (New York Tribune.) Henry H. Rogers has been elected president of the Virginian railway. which is a consolidation of the Deep water and Tidewater railway compa nies, succeeding W. N. Page. This road has been Mr. Rogers' particular hobby since the organisation of the Tidewater company. In March, 1904 and he has spent millions of dollars on its construction. When complet ed it will form a line 446 miles In length from Deepwater, W. Va., to Sewell's Point, Va., near Norfolk, and will open up the rich bituminous coal fields In West Virginia, In which Mr. Rogers is largely Interested. According to the latest reports, rails have been laid and construc tion work has been completed on 873 miles of the road, and grading and tunneling on the remaining portion are said to be almost entirely fin ished. It Is estimated that by Feb ruary 1, 1909, the line will be In op eration from the coal fields to tide water. In February, 1907, the Tidewater railway borrowed $10,000,000 on 6 per eent notes. It was a time of money stringency, and the loan cost the road about 7H per cent. In May of this year the Virginian Rail way campany sold $17,000,000 of 6 per cent notes, the proceeds of which, It waa stated, would be used to re tire the former Issue and to complete the construction of the line. When completed, It is said, the road will be one of the best con structed lines In the country. The grading and ballasting are of the best, and the bridges will be so con structed as to permit of the haul ing of 4000-ton trains. It Is the opinion of practical railroad men that the total cost of the road, In cluding equipment, to move 6,000, 000 tons of coal a year, will approx imate $55,000,000, which will make It one of the most expensive roads of Its length ever built. Mr. Rogers Is said to have put $30,- 000,000 of his own money Into the project, and. In addition, to have In curred $10,000,000 personal liabil ity. It was currently reported some time ago that even his vast resources had been so strained by the tremen dous absorption of cash by the rail way that he had been obliged to dis pose of many high-grade securities to meet the drain upon him. SUBSCRIBE FOR THE MAIL, PROHIBITION'S CRFIT RUNS within WIIIIIW DENVER, Oct. 24. The follow ing are the reports of the president and secretary of the National Wo men! Christian Temperance Union In session in this city. Extracts are also given from the Treasurer's re port: President Stevens Report. President Stevens began her address by reciting the gains made by the temperance cause during the past year. Prohibition, she said, now pre vailed In Maine, Kansas, North Dakota, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ala bama, Mississippi and North Caro lina. Arkansas la expected to pass a prohibition law next January, when the legislature meets as the voters of the state declared tor prohibition on September 14 and Texas, the speaker declared, "Is well nigh keeping step." Mrs. Stevens denied there had been any backsliding on the part of Maine. "On September 14," she said, "the state of Maine emphatically reaffirm ed Its advocacy of prohibition in the election of Mr. Fernald as governor. He affirmed before his nomination that he was opposed to re-submlsslon and that he believed In upholding and strictly enforcing the prohibi tory law of the state." Mrs. Stevens said that, "The effort In Tennessee to keep the saloon at a certain distance from institutions of learning has resulted in almost free ing Tennessee from saloon bondage." and predicted that the state would have state-wide prohibition soon. She referred to the victory on April 7 in Illinois, when 1,150 towns voted to do away with liquor selling and predicted that both Illinois and Ohio would be placed In the prohibi tion column, "About the time their Junior L. T. L. boys and girls reached the age of 21." Continuing Mrs. Stevens said: "We should like to mention every state where there have been triumphs but this would Include all the states as well as all the territories, even Hawaii and Alaska and It certainly includes with great emphasis the District of Columbia." New Hampshire and Vermont were entitled to pity, she said for having abandoned prohibition for local op tion, which had had the effect of In creasing the sale of rum. Report of the Secretary. The report of the corresponding secretary, Mrs. Gray, gave a history of the progress made by the associ ation during the past year. Each state was taken up and the progress made reported in detail. In her sum mary Mrs. Gray said: "Gleanings from the states from which reports hare been received show that 1,506 new unions hare been organized, 25,472 total abstin ence pledges have been taken. We have more than double the gain of last year, the total net gain In mem bership being 20,463. Thirty-one states will take part In Jubilee night. Those making a gain of over 100 are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Cali fornia (Southern), Delaware, Mary land, New Mexico, South Carolina, Washington (Eastern); a gain of over 200, Idaho (Southern), Massa chusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Wis consin; of over 200, Minnesota: over 400 North Dakota; over 600, Califor nia, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kan sas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York. Ohio. Pennsylvania, Ten nessee, Virginia, Washington (West ern), West Virginia. The single state making the largest net gain Is Pennsylvania, which has 2,854 new members to Its credit." The Treasurer Report. The treasurer's report showed a total receipt of $75,594 and disburse ments of 66,997. This leaves a bal ance on hand of $8,597 as compared with a balance of $5,084 a year ago.
