t II LITTLE OF E Tbe notification committee de serve their vacation. maker Is mliihtlly in the llme Vcnl now; but no man need I tmore. Smoking free campaign cigars doubtless helped Joe Cannon to the Billionaire clau. Orrllle Wright la not discouraged. He may yet be able to itay In the air s long as the politician!. One good feature of canned ora tory: You can ahut it off before the audience la talked to death. The way of the transgressor Is ard. principally because the authorl llni won't let him have his own. The demand for chorus girls will always be met so long as young wo men have an aversion to housework. The robbers who looted Mark Twain's home will probably plead that their work is not to be taken seriously. ID the time Castro gets through earning that big ship around on tils shoulder he may find his backbone weakened. Fortunately for human happiness, nly the courts Insist on hearing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing ut the truth. After the Young Turks have ac quired a good constitution they may kegin to take a nlnterest In six-day Sieycle races. Fairbanks is to take the stunp; Sot none of the campaign animals will be frightened by a rattling of Buttermilk cans. The Wisconsin Democratic plat form Is only 200 words long, and In addition, we understand, all long words were kept out of It. Japan has abandoned the war talk sat that gives Hobson a chance to say she's "laying low," In order to take ua off our guard. That St. Louis woman who killed a rattlesnake with a. hatpin - the ther day could no doubt turn the trick just as neatly with a hairpin. "The Lion Lies Down with the Lamb" la a Wall street head line. It a safe bet tbat the lamb will not a visible when the lion arises. Of "The Song of Plenty" a Geor gia exchange says: "No song at all. There's 'plenty' alrignt, but when we have It we feel too good to sing! According to tile lute census, there are 8,148 goats in Kansas, but When it comes to butting In, Kansas eloesn't rely entirely on her goats. The 10-yoar-old Philadelphia girl who raptured a burglar will gpt a Carnegie medal. Great pity thny can't give her a place on the police force. A Baltimore undertaker adver tises "a free grave with every $75 faneral." Inducements to die In Baltimore are great but not at-tractive. 'Judging from appearances, the story of that man who swallowed table knife while eating pie either tailed to make much of an Impres sion or was poorly circulated. The big candidates aro quarreling ver tr.e question as te who Htarled the first Ananias Club; aud the Brethren of the order are not willing to testify. 'A Denver man on bis death-bed selected another husband for his widow, but no one seems to know which one of the two he had the grudge against. 'Tom Watson says he Is willing to throw Georgia to Bryan If he needs ft, but the Nebraskan probably has his doubts about Tom's ability to throw straight. 'Now that the country is assured of Bountiful crops this year. It Is not caite clear why the Republicans go s the trouble of Issuing any other campaign arguments. 'Chicago has a Tuft club which ad salts no member under pounds. We hope the proiier authorities have seen to It that the floor of the club- Son at Is properly braced. "A baseball pennant," says the eiaphls News-Scimitar, "Is nothing hat a measly rag at best." Is It ttcessary to look up the showing Bade by the Memphis team this year We notice that the recent lynch- tags in the south have been pulled mtt "In a quiet manner." The antl- sslse movement seems to be making sane headway down there. - We women cannot choose our .tat," sings an Eastern poet. Still women have the necessary funds, we Call to see why real estate men w tax let them have what they want 'A scientist has Just returned from Canada, where he "canned" over 100 fadlan songs In the graphophone. They will prove Just the thing for tbe ana who cordially hates his nelgh ftors. If It ever becomes noccssary for very would-be candidate to state kow much he Is worth and how he got It, the recording angel will find at necessary to Increase his staff of perjury experts In the shorthand sBrialon. "The touch of a friend," remarks a Missouri contemporary, "may hurt mora' than the cut of an enemy." No doubt about It. Especially if the friend forgets the amount he touch ed you for. A Parnell, Mo., man recently ate i bananas In ten minutes and then stowed away a gallon of ice cream and drank three quarts of water, lie deserves a severe talking to from lr. Wiley. The Nashville American Informs the Democracy of Tennessee that this Is "no time to tread water." It real ly looks, though, as If It is time foi all Tennesseeans to find out what water tastes like. The printer who recently had hit stereotype plates smashed by Evan gelist Billy Sunday's sledgehammer can now form some Idea of how Sa tan feels every time Billy preaches one of his sledgehammer sermons. Why Coliln Are Dangerous. Because you have contracted or dinary colds and recovered from them without treatment of any kind, do not for a moment Imagine that colds are not dangerous. Kveryune knows that pneumonia and chronic catarrh have their origin in a com mon cold. Consumption is not cau sed by a cold but lliu cold prepares tbe system for the reception and de velopment of the germs that would not otherwise have found lodgment. It Is the same with all Infectious dis eases. Diphtheria, ecariet lever. measles and whooping cough are much more likely o tie contracted when the child has a cold. You will see from this that more real danger lurks In a cold than in any other or the common ailments. The easiest and quickest way to cure a cold Is to take Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. The many remarkable cures effected by this preparation have made ll a staple article of trade over a large part of the world. For sale by Chas. Strang. LOCAL AND L. III.OWN TO HHRKIM. HER NAME I'ltAYKKH POK HAIX. MILWAUKEE. Wis., Sept. 26. Archbishop Sebastian G. Messmer of Milwaukee has sent a letter to bis clergy ordering prayers for rain. The letter says: I take this opportunity to Inform the reverend clergy that in public calamities like the present terrible drought they need not wait for or ders from me to arrange public de votions and prayers, but may use their own good judgment aa the needs of their parishea or districts may require. However, it, la hereby ordered that public prayer be of fered in our churches for rain until the Lord degns to hear our prayers." COIiOltKD MAX AND OSTRICH. NEW YORK, Sept. 28. "Thar sure ain't no chicken ever raised cayn't cotch, but I ain't gwlne take no mo' chances with them two-lalg- ged mules, no sah," firmly asserted George Washington Johnson, who is ut the Mineola, L. I., hospital nurs ing a face which resembles a well done hamburger steak, after en countering nn ostrich at the fair grounds Sunday. Keeper Ford Whlto also possesses some severe bruiBes, tokens of es teem from the same biped. When Flectwing, a racing ostrich. escaped from his cage Sundny John son thought he saw nn opportunity to establish a record for his black brethren In the chlcken-grnbblng line. He made a flying Inrkle and firm ly grasped the ostrich by the ankle. The glnnt bird pnsued, looked an noyed, placed Its foot in Johnson's face und gently pushed him 25 feet through space. The only accidents which occurred In Medford yesterday were the col liding or J. M. rtoot a ana u. t. lw- ton's autos, with the result that the Recorder BenJ. M. Collins did a land-office business yesterday In his court and for a while he was about as busy as the ticket seller waa at the Wild West show Monday. To the credit of the city, however. It can be aaid that most of the guilty ones wore visitors from outside points. Two visitors named Allen and Law rence arrived In town. Lawrence drove a horse and Alien a mule. They -were strangers to each other. but got acquainted in a saloon, and after treating each other a few times they traded animals. Allen paying $"i0 to boot. They then went to look the steeds over and the former own er of the horse wanted to back out and demanded his money back. In stead of that, he got a biff which caused "Maud" to hee-haw In glee. Just how many rounds were fought la not known, but both presented an apiiearance yesterday morning which caused all who saw them to think that "Maud" treated both of them like she is pictured as doing 'in the comic supplements. tawrence claimed that he paid the $50 back to Allen, but this the latter denied, and he finally agreed to take $40 and call tbe matter square, and that amount was banded over by the owner of the mule and the Incident waa declared to be closed. J. D. Galvln claimed tbat be was under the Influence of something vastly stronger than circus lemonade for the first time in his life, but as he also admitted that he had no fixed place of abode it was Impossible to verify his statement. He bad money with him wbich he had not the opportunity of blowing In before he was taken care of by the police, and his roll was reduced $5 when he made his getaway. T. M. Burgess came from Ashland with the best intentions In the world of not disgracing that city and the citizens thereof. However, he soon fell In with some old friends after his arrival and realized when too late that there is a place where the streets are paved with good Intentions. He was ordered by the police to move on and tried his beat to do so, but in stead he measured his length on the walk. He also paid $5. John Garren admitted that a fool and his money was soon parted. He belonged to the show and was paid his month's salary Monday night. In a few hours it was all gone but the effect, and when he had no more money for booze he claimed that the saloonkeepers owed him some. Just as he finished his story the recorder saw the train approaching from the north and asked Garren how he would like to follow the show. He too saw the train as It was pulling Into the depot and was wise enough to take the hint. He secured a seat on the front of the blind baggage. and got away safely from here. Alexander Llthgow turned out to be a native. He is a brlckmason by trade, but evidently considered that it was up to him to show the visit ors that one Medford man at least could make some showing In the drinking line. All present In court admitted that he was entitled to the first prize, but instead of being com plimented for doing so nobly he was ordered to pay the usual sum, which he did with very poor grace. THE COVKT TO DECIDE. PORTLAND, Or., .Sept. 28. Un til the federal courts finally deter mine whether the state of Oregon has or has not enacted legislation governing the waters of the Coluin- bla river from bank to bank and to enforce these laws, any one who was permitted to fish in these under the law as it stood previously to June 1 last, may pursue the occupation un molested. This Is the effect of the Injunction granted today In the matter against the fish warden of this state. Ore gon fishermen Intervening, asked that the injunction which was recent ly granted restraining the Oregon authoritl'?s from interfering with the Washington fishermen fishing for salmon In the Columbia river, be ex- tpnded so as to permit the Oregon fishermen the same privilege. It was contended by tbe Oregon fishermen that as the matter stood Washington could come over Into the Oregon waters and take fish un molested by the Oregon authorities, whereas the Oregon fishermen were prohibited from fishing on either side of the river. The United States dis trict Judge enlarged the scope of the Injunction as requested. From now until the supreme court of the United States decides the "Chris Nlelson" case, the same laws will govern the actions of the Ore gon authorities that it did before the people, under the Initiative and ref erendum law last June, enacted the acts which are at the bottom of the controversy between the states of Oregon and Washington over the Jur isdiction of the Columbia river.
