Dated May 22, 1908. W. B. JACKSON, Administrator. Colvlf A Durham, Attorneys (or Estate, THE Ml NIC HAL WEALTH OF BOCTHERN OREGON Entertainingly, yet with scientific accuracy, "Orro," a well-posted writer, tells of the mineral wealth of Southern Oregon and Northern California as follows: Metallurgists, mineralogists and geologists when called upon to visit localities where ores of nietal abound especially gold ores have learned by experi ence some facts of value In the ex amination of mines. All have their pet theories, with many of them hold ing, that, "ore depositions are from the surface," while others equally sincere. Insist that "the values have been shot up or come from below." The mining boys In the hills assert that "fold grows," and there is per haps some truth In the statement. We quote from Williams: "Rocks are In reality far from being dead, inert, stationary masses, which they appear to the ordinary observer. The fas cinating study of chemical geology especially when aided by the micro scope, shows them to be In a state of almost constant change." Mineral oglcal chemistry and crystallography prove that there are families of min erals as easily recognizable as are those of the animal or vegetable kingdom. Mineralogy and geology may be classified as subjects and are not properly speaking true science, there being but one exact science, and that Is mathematics. The most practical geologist Is the man behind the pick. Graduates from mining schools and colleges! while partly equipped on chemistry I and metallurgy must spend many years on mineralogy and, besides, have practical work tn mines. The greater per cent or such graduates are not ashamed when called upon to take a post-graduate course "side by each" with the mining boys In the shaft, stope. tunnel or level. I Siskiyou county, California, has 1 producd $150,000,000 In gold from placers and lode mines, and Is still producing; with territory not even yet prospected. In the vernacular 1 of the day that "Is going some.1 Ne vada also will "be going some" be fore equaling that production. Northern California and Southern Oregon have never encouraged any thing on the "boom" order In min ing, and it is not a healthy locality for Rhyollte and Greenwated, Nav., fakers. Near Orleans, and on parts of the Klamath Indian reservation are lo calities that will pay to mine from the grass roots. Near Hawklnsvllle, Yreka and Hornbrook a mineral col lector will find gold ore "way up In the picture values." In this sec tion of California where the Siski you (with Its many mountain passes) has you one hour on California ground and In the next hour on Southern Oregon territory, many placers are operated, working year In and year out, "where everybody wodks. Including father." Much has been written regarding the so-called black sands of the Pa cific coast; where every rancher would own and operate a blast fur nace for commercial metallic iron (?) but notwithstanding the great sums of money that have been expended on "tests" the fact remains tbat iron obtained from the sources Indicated is of very doubtful value; the titan iferous Iron conterts, with those of phosphorus, will not make satisfac tory iron; because such Iron is "cold short." The monazlte sand, zircon and other contents of the black sand might be profitable to a company headed by a living Baron Munchau sen. Even the platinum In these sands is a difficult matter to separate; platinum values to a low per cent be ing combined with some of the Iron and the grain and flake platinum Is as tedious to "pick out' as It would be for a pickaninny with hands cov ered with molasse to pick loose feathers. The Greenback mine of Southern Oregon supported a town of 600 peo ple for many years; It was "worked out" this year (?) The Golden Wedge mine is said to have "a nine-foot lead of $400 ore per ton" (20 ounces approximately). The writer knows that over 200 tons of the ore at this mine "goes" $200 per ton One of the ablest mining engineers of Nevada stated recently at the Hol ier) beck hotel In Los Angeles that "The Ashland Is the greatest mine on the Pacific coast," to which opin ion the write radda "and with more ore bodies ot low grade free milling ores than any three mines on the Pacific coast." Jac':son county has approximately produced $35,000,000 from Its pla cers, and Josephlns county Is prob ably ahead of this production from like sources. Some of the bars ot gravei even on the smaller placerr of Josephine and Jackson coun ties, are phenomenally rich, yielding as high as $4 per cubic yard. A gen eral average of well-equipped mines will go 45 cents per cubic yard; with 15 to 20 cents on some workings carelessly treated with too little quicksilver and muscle. The old Sterling placer has pro duced $50,000 annually. Another placer, near Monumental "which never gets Into print" Is good for a like output. There are probably 600 placers in Southern Oregon and 85 per cent of the number pay for working. There have been no failures in Southern Oregon quarts mining where Intelligent methods have been pursued. Operators with but little experience, and unfamiliar with the ores of the different states of our country are, ot course, pussled when they examine (?) ores In Southern Oregon There are hundreds who claim that tellurldes are found In Josephine and Jackson counties, ihe nearest ap proach to such mineral is among the sulphides of tbe Bonanza mine. Not a true sample of either calverlte, sylvanlte, besslte c petzlte has been found here, and the statement is made after three years' patient seek ing In the hills and laboratory.
