Cameron, accompanied by his brother, William Cameron, were vis itors from the Applegate country yesterday. Mr. Cameron reports ev erything as doing nicely on thei Ap-plegate. The Swastika club gave a mysl enjoyable dance at the Opera Houj-j on Thursday evening. The ladies In charge were Mrs. A. Elsenhart, Mrs. E. D. Klwood and Mrs. H. C. Kent ner. Over 60 couples were present. F. E. Wells and wife ot this city have left for Seattle, Wash., where they will make their home. Mr. Wells has been an operator at the Western Union office for the past six months. He was succeeded by H. E. Kennedy, of Drain. Or. Councilman F. B. Walden has lived In that part ot the country for 19 years and Is now over 80 years ot age. He has been living on the homestead upon which a mac by the name of Shirley made final proof several years ago. The Medford postoftice em ployes are being worked several de grees above their normal 1 capacity these times. Some ot this Is occas ioned by the amount of elecUpn lit erature which la being sent oat, and to thht la added all the school com mencement literature. However, there Is a glimmer of sunshine ahead of the help In the office there ts to be one. and perhapa two, clerks ad ded In the force after July 1. C. W. Fraley baa Bold his farm on Griffin creek to II. A. Dlekerson of Hood River. There are. 55 M acres In the tract, eight acres of which Is an orchard of four-year-old trees. Tha price paid waa 4500. Mr. Dlekerson la here with his family and will at once take pos session ot his recent possessions. Commissioner Patterson Is ar ranging to move the road-grading outfit to south and west from Med ford. That "sticky" road north of the old Held place la to be graced as Is also the road running south past the old Fordyce place. From here the graders will go over on to the Jacksonville road and then the new Ross road, past the Wilbur Jones place, will be tackled. ' The old depot of the Rogue River Valley Railroad, which has stood for 18 years near the South ern Pacific tracks on Sixth street, has been moved to a lot on North D street, which is owned by President Barnum, ot the road. The depot has long been a familiar landmark in the city, and tor some time that part ot the city will look rather queer to those who were accustomed to see It. The new depot of the road has been completed and ts a credit to the town. O. W. Taylor, the county fruit In spector, reports the fruit conditions throughout the valley better than an average. There seems to be a ser pentine strip through near the cen ter of the valley In which there is not quite the average crop, but this strip Is not wide. In all other locali ties the crop Is so heavy that much thinning will be necessary. The con dition of the trees in all the orch ards is good and are being well taken care of. The Medford Brlrk company com menced laying brick Monday on the new building which J. C. Hall Is building, on North Front street. The building will be (0 by 75 feet In site. - There will be two 16 by 75 toot rooms, one ot which will he oc cupied by a moving-picture show and the other by restaurant. Owing to the happy caprice of that Indescribable something that watches ovor mankind and Is named, for want of something definite, "luck," John B. Williams, from Eagle Point, yesterduy narrowly escaped death. The team which he waa driving be cume f lightened near the Intersec tion of East Suvonth and the Eagle Point road, and run away In the M- rectlon of Kagle Point. As the team reached the Queen Anne adi'l'.lon they swerv.d Into tho open rie.'d struck a pile of rocks and demol ished the carriage. Mr. Williams nux hurled' to tho ground, but ho fot-tit nutely fell between two stone pin") upou soft ground and escaped unin jured. Hud he fell three feet to either side or five feet beyond he would have been seriously Injured and probably killed. The team took fright at an unto mobile driven by two youug men, whose identity Is unknown, and be fore Mr. Williams could control them they got rway. John McCarty, a laboring msn. who was working upoa a bulldlm near, rushed to Mr. Williams' assist ance and succeeded in turning the team Into a nearby fence, where they were stopped. He then turned to Mr. Williams, who, beyond a few bruises, was uninjured. Mr.( Williams obtained a carriage from a local livery stable and left for Eagle Point. The spring wagon In which Mr. Williams was riding was completely demolished- as far as the bed was concerned, but the running gear was not badly damaged. Williams gath ered up the remains of the wreck as well as he could and, trailing the wrecked outfit, left for home. Whooping Cough. "In February onr daughter had the whooping cough. The expenses for the year 1905 were about 3000 higher on account ot the expenses occas ioned by the county exhibit main tained at the Lewla and Clark fair. 1901 $27,366.57 1902 29,440.36 1903 27.597.65 1904 31,075.83 1905 32,138.45 1906 29.862.01 1907 30,927.69 These are the expenses certified to by the county clerk to the state treasurer and on which Jackson county's proportion of state taxes will be based when thore la another basis figured. Tnese figures wll compare very favorably with other counties and insures us that our proportion of the state tax will be belt1, down to a small percentage ot the whole am ount ot state taxes to be paid. Strang. W. T. Oreive la Accident. On Friday evening, W. T. Oreive, the republican candidate for county assessor, bad the misfortune to have hla carriage upset. Hia wife and child were in the carriage at the time, but escaped uninjured, as did Mr. Oreive, with the exception ot a skinned face. The horse took fright at an automobile and shied, upset ting the carriage. Mr. Oreive states emphatically that the accident was one that might happen to any one. and that the road was In no way re sponsible for the accident, as has been alleged. May 24, 1908. after an Illness extending over a period ot ter years, from diabetes and cancer of tpe stomach Deceased wa. born in Madison, Ind., tn 18!4 He came to Portland. Or., In 1851. a4 a few years later moved to Halsey, Or., anl afterward to Roaeburg and from there tc Medford, In 194, and alter a brief residence here be moved to Lane's Creek, this county, where he lived until a few weeks ago, when he moved to Central Point. He waa a merchant near'v all hla life, but re tired from bus:usa when be left Roseburg. He waa twice married. Three daughters by his first marri age survlv.j him. In 1?94 be waa married to Miss Clara E. Webber ot Portland, wno a'.vo survives him. Mr. Lane waa a member ot the Christian church and had been for 40 years. Funeral services were held by the pastor of the Christian church ot Centra' Point and Interment waa made in the cemetery r ' lr that place.
