Day th baad of the firm ol scobd a Day, ot Nea York City, who Dandle a large quantity of tun fruit grown la this Motion, addressed the Rogae River Horticultural As sociation at the last ngular ma ting of tbe Association on last Saturday afternoon. Mr. Day paid a high tri bute to tba quality ol tba Irolt grown In this Motion and aUUd that tba pears and apples from to. Boaus Hirer Valley war. making a greater repptetloa fur tnemeelvM In New York and wire constantly In demand. Mr, Day's Arm handles nothing but freih fruit and none but the best. For thirty-eight years Be bas bern in bnalneas and the statement that the Bogne River la onexceUed In the railing of apples and pears, oomlng bom him, is In Itself a 'high toeti monlal ) aa to the quality ot the froltgrown here. In the ooorae of tola remarks Mr. Day sought to emphasize the faot that the fruit men in tbta Motion honld pay mora attention to quality than to any thing eUe. He stated that the Bpitzenberg apple led all the other veiletiee aot even exoept ing the Newtown. Ue stated furtbai that the Oomloe pear was the flneet pear that eould be grown and would furnish the growers the largest re turns. Mr. Day's remarks oloaed with a description of the manner In which the fruit was disposed of In New York. Tbe association dsnided not to en ter an exhibit of Rogue River apples in a fair which is to te held in Spo kane next December. They will turn tbe matter over to the Commercial Ulob and let that body do what tbey deem beet with tbe matter. The county fair will be held nex t Isl In Medford and It was thought best by tbe Association ts ban all the nergy ot that body turned to mak ing- tbe fair a success Josephine county will eld In tbe loaal fair. The state gives 11200 for partly financing tbe undertaking. The association spent most of the afternoon In the discussion ot spray ing, all of tbe members Joining In tbe discussion. Rogue River Horticultural Mectlaf. Society TD START SOON. Meeting called to order May 2nd by Pres. J. K. Watt. Correepoodenee from A. H. Carson, Prof Lewis, and J. F. Mynr relative to tbe proposed "blight demonstration" to be held in Medford, tbe latter part ot June read and discussed. Also a letter from Pres. Monroe of tbe National Apple Show to be held at Spokane in Dec ember was presented, "be cunwnsus of opinion of tbe memcennip was tbat as should give our best atten tion to our own dtstriot fair to be held this fall rather tbaa to take part in tbe apple show. Mr. Day, head of the firm of Ssobel and Day, heaviest bandies ot PaclQo Coast green fruits waa present and gave some interesting remarks. Mr Dav said la part: "The New York market ie a peculiar market. The first thing to note Is that 'quality, quality, quality' Is tbe key note. Wben tbey buy Spltzenbuigs they want tbem red, deep red, all round. and large. There ate but four planes producing Spitz for toat market Kngue Klver Valley, Hood Hirer, Yakima, end JVenRtebee. To my mind tbe Spitz Is the apple of the future. In regard to Newtowns the New York market wants tbem ltrge, England wante the emaller grades Speaking ot pears Mr. Day ettld, "1 olasBlfy pears as follows: tbe Cornice and at the head in a class by itself, In a second class place the Uaitlttt, tbe D'Anjoo, sod toe Winter Mollis, and. In the third class all other pears And qunlitv Is the first cimairietation in all dines. Tbe New Yo:k people want their apples snd pears maoe to order." Mt. Day then described the method of merketing fruits Apples are sold st private uie exo.pt wben lota are damaged' Pears are told at publlo auction, from 10 to 30 oars be Ing sold daily. The shipper forwards manifest or Invoice by mall. A catalogue Is printed the day before the sale. Care are onlleoted at Jersey City and towed over after midnight and unloaded. One box In ten Is opened as a sampls, buyers may open other boxes bnt tbey must nsll thsm up again. At 7 a, m. the getea are opened and the buyers look over tbe lots, catalog In band. At nine o'clock the bell rings and tbe buyers pan to tbe auction rooms, where tbey bid from the catalog. Pears hsve been sold In four minutes. As blgb aa Do per pear by the earload bis been real ized . The aootlon oloaes at 11 or 12 o'oloek, and reports and check are sent out In the afternoon, and work getting ready for tbe next day's mIo Mr. Day la ons of tba few, It not tbe only, bead of a Ann wbo makes an anal trips to visit bis customers. The Bseeviafc Oafs Is better tnaa a new sua age meat. As was to be eiieoted tbe project of obtaining tbe water supply of tb olty from Wesson Canyon bas beta attacked. However, a survsv of tbe acts In tbe ease falls to sbuw where tba elty la loser by any action takaa so tar by tbe elty eouaoU or tba water committee. A perusal of tbe ordiaaaoe providing for tn. agree- ment with M F. Henley will show tbat tbe alty has not aa yet oloaed tbe deal wltb Mi. Hanley but bas simply taken an option on the water In Wesson Csnyon. This, In tba flist plaoe, disproves that the olty tn any way baa been "buncoed" aa baa been alleged. And the terms of tba con tract with Mr. Henley, aftsr It Is closed, are auob aa to thoroughly protect tbe elty In tbe ease that there le not a enfflclent amount of water In Wesson Csnyon for tbe city. Aeoordlng to tbe contract, which la to be dosed witb Mr. Haoley, tbe olty Is protected from litigation tot a term of 13 years This allows .the olty three yesis in which to oomplste tbe line and ten yjaie caageof tba water. Under the state law tbe water right la established by ten years oeaga. Ho tbe v It amply protect ed in th'' " -o. Furtb jley tehee 115,000 of tbe a. . . . te paid bim by tbe olty, in bonds, which be s to place In a hank for a term of ten years, also putting up llo,ooo personal se curity, as a guaiantee tbat there Is at least 3oo lnobss of wster in the can yon and avaiilable for tble olty. It there Is not 3oo lnobes ol wster Available, tbe bonds will revert to tbe olty together witb tbe eecuilty. It foolish . to enteitain tbe tbongbt that Mr, Henley would cIom a deal wltb tne olty If be oould not fulfil the first requisite of bis agree- t, tbat la, that there are 3oo Inohee of water available. If tbe weter ie not obtained from Wason Canyon it will base to be ob tained from tbe north folk of tbe Little Butte. Big Butte, Applsgate and Wagner creek are all eliminated on aooount of the eost of obtaining wster for the olty from thoee souroes. Now If the survey is made to Wesson Canyon It will terminate at lbs Junc tion of Waison Canyon and Little Butte. Tbe survey will be the same whether tbe water la obtained from ona or tbe other, and as the water must be obtained from ona of these two souroes there will not be any needless exnenM by a survey or by tne eonetruotlon of the pipe line. As to the amount of water needed for this olty 6o inohee le deemed ample at tbe preesnt time but it le tbongbt beet to look toward tbe fu ture and put In a system tbat will eupply Medford wltb a population ot 25,ooo wbloh may be tbe ease"rB five or ten years. If It is shown thst tbe water from Wesson Csoyon Is not enough to eupply the city It will be a very easy matter for the olty to condemn the water In Little Butte and put la a gate wbeie the II croseee the river thus adding to the supply from Wesson Csnyoo. Or It will be possible for tbe city to Install a storage dem In tne cenyon which will store enough water to emply tide over tbe two dry month nf the year It is not deputed that theia will be enough water available duili.g ten montbe of the year. And tbe olty baa a guarantee, backed uo by 815, ooo, tbat there Is st least 3io Inches of water in the canyon the year around. A number of residents of this city claim tbat it would have been cheap er to obtain the water from the Little Butte creek at the Sllnger renoh where tbe price put on the wafer was $3ooo. These people have not stop ped to consider tbat tbe Sllnger tanch la two miles fuitber trom Medford than tbe souroe ot supniy In the Wasson Canyon, Aooordlng to Engineer Kelsev it will cost til, ooo a mils to oonrtiuot the pipe line whifh would make the weter at tbe Sllnger ranch cost 33,ooo, or (5o,- ooo more than tbe price to be paid to Mr. Hanley. And then It wonld be Impossible to obtain tbe guarantee that Mr. Hanley has put up. Another argument In favor of t'.e Wesson Canyon project ie tbe feot that the weter from this canyon was pronounoed to be tbe purewt and best of all tba water submitted to chemists for analysis. It is more free of solids and vegetable matter, end sltusted ee It Is, In a long, narrow, deep csnyon it csn esslly be protect ed trom roving bends of csttls, thus Insuring purity to a greeter degree tbaa would be tbe ceae If tbe weter wee to cove from Little Butte. Tbe water oommlttee of tbe elty oounoll la to be commended upon tbe way tbey have worked npon the wetei project. Tbey beve spsnt time and monsy In tbsir endeevor to do tbe beat tnlng posslbls for tbe olty In regard to tba water question and tbey should be tbaaksd Instead of attaeked for doing aa well as tbey beve. Tbey bars not alosad tba deal wltb Mr' Haaley, .tbey have TO CLEAN IIP THE CITY The Butte Falls and Western Ra'l road oompany will break atoned wltbln tbe next wsek fur their eleo trio line between Eegle Point and Butte Falls. 01 tba thirteen mllo between tbat. two points five miles of grade most be built so tbat an electric toad may be laid. The ma chinery for tba grading baa been shipped from Portland and ahonld be here within few days. First tbe oompany Intends to meke ready tbe grade so tbat automobiles may get as faraa tbe Falls without difficulty and sucb grade will make It possi ble for tbe oompany to get out con elderable amount of tba lumber tbey have cut at their mills on their pro perty near Butte rails. B. H. Harris, manager of tbe com pany, In wbiob tba principal owners aiwCoL William a Dewing and Cnarlee A. Dswlng, of Kalamazoo, Mlof':;i" 'eturned from Portland on Monday ttaeio be bad been to pur chase grading machinery and supplies. The oompany at present bas on band (3500 woitb of grading machinery and this is to be added to, to a con siderable extent. Tbe surrey for tbe grade from Butte Fails, ovsr the Obenobain range to Eagle Point baa been completed and aooordlng to statements made by Mr. Harris to a leprceeatatlve of tba Mail the work of oonstruotloa wiU be eommenoed within a week. Tbe company owner 19,000 acres of timber land, nnvlng recently pur chased tba righto of tbe Botte Falls Sugsr Pine Lumber Company, which waa foroad into a leoeiver'e hands by tbe failuie of tbe Oregon Trust and Savings Bank of Portland. Tba in terest ot the dolonot oompany was purchased by tbe firm witb which Mr. Harris Is oonneoted for 150,000. The new owners will not state any time in getting to woik developing tbsir new property. Col Dewing Is tbe bolder of a first mortgage on the Pacific & Eastern railroad la an amount of 150,000. This mortgage la . now In tba courts and It la expected that It will be Mttled within the next thirty days. Only two months ago tba Injunction against tbe mortgage waa raised so tbat CoL Dewing oould prooeed In th matter of foreclosure. It Is a question whether tbe present owners of the Paolfio A Eastern road will pay tba mortgage or give up tbe road. If tbe Paolfio ft Eastern road falls In to tba banda of tbe Butte Falla A Eaetern Railroad Oompany tbe el ac tio line of tba company will be over tbls Una, if not, tba company wlU conatruot a new line from Eagle Point to tble olty. ' Tbe oompany at present has a plan nlng and ablogle mill in oparatlon and they contemplate putting In box factory and a furniture factory. Tbe new factor lee will be located In or r Medford. Tba oompany bae large water power mill at preMnt running and tbey have 1. ooo, ooo feet ot lumber ready to! bring out to their property near Butte Falls. This is the reason they will rush tbe mat ter of tbe new electric lint. CoL Dewiog Is expected to be In Medford within the next thirty days snd will probably map out tbe work of the company for tbe coming sum mer and fall. CITY COUNCIL Survey to Start Monday. Engineer Cummings, who was Bp- pointed by tbe olty counoll to be the field enaineer of tbe pipe lines, will take the Held next Monday, lie Is encased at present In getting bis re together, end on Monday will start on bis long teak of finding tbe moat practical route for the pipe line between this city and lbs source of wa'er soppily. Mr. Cumminge Is a partner of T. W. Osgood, tbe City bnglneer. for some time Mr. Cumminge hee been doing the dranghtman's work io the office of tne city engineer and there fore be Is thorougly convsrsant wltb tbe plans of ths counoll as regards tbe Pipe lins, Before oomlng to Medford, Mr. Cumminge epent good deal of bis time in other sec tions of the northwest on work of tbls kind and lbs olty is fort on ate In having as rellsbls a man as Mr. Cumminge In ohsrge of the work. arrangements so that tbe olty will be amply protected In case tbey do The Mall thoronghly believes thst the wetei oommltt as made Its report to the eity eooaoll In fevor of tba Wasson Canyon actuated by tba teat motives only. If it UevelnM tbat there le not enough water In tba can yon for tba city It will simply bs a mistake made on tnelr part, and not one thet they are to ts oondemned for. Tbe obarga tbat tbey "boa tload" tbe elty, or tbat there wee graft mixed up wltb tba dsal, la too nonsensical to be oonsidsred.
