Other tar pon when struck came straight up from the bottom, one grazing our gun wale aa he rose and another leaping over tbe atern of the canoe. Aa soon aa a tarpon waa tired enough to let ua pull the cunoe beside him we removed the hook from hla moutb and let blm swlui home to hla family. It bupiwucd ouco that a turpou was less tired thuu we bad assumed. On that occasion we swam home, and be hud a good man atory to tvl! hla friends. It bad becu counted a poor year for tarpon, yet In fifteen consecutive days of fishlug we were fast to forty-four tarpon, each of which bad jumped for us from one to twelve tunes. ThU high water mark of twelve Jumps was made by a tarpon which was stimu lated to bis later efforts by tbe pres ence of a pursuing shark, and the twelfth Jump waa a double number. There waa commotion In the crimsoned water, new .vi;or at tbe other end of my Hue, and it was an hour later when I Anally landed on a sand bar a ahark wltb an aldermanic stomach A knife drawn across tbla distended organ dis closed the tarpon in lections, with the hook still fast In bis jaw, and enabled the camera man to photograph to gether tbe aubjecta be bad recently photographed separately. . Although this 8hark was only one-fiftb tbe size of our big hammerhead, yet he made but two bites of bis victim. Our work at Boca Grande ended wltb the red letter day of the season of all seasons. This story present oue of those psychological pruxle that some people sneer at aa fraudulent, some tukc great Interest hi, and to wblcb most people are Indifferent Michael Keenan, oue of tbe most desperate of burglars, havl-g- Just been discharged from state prisou after serving a ten ywaaa' term, waa prowl ing at midnight on tha outskirts of a town looking for au opportunity to re plenish bis exebaqoar. lie surveyed sev-ern.1 bouses Xrom 2Slr back yaida to ttiukoV aeiec-tloa Tor burglary when be espied I figure walking In rear of a bouse tbat fronted on another street. 5cenan laid low and watched. Waa the person bent on tb earn purpose as himself! Be soon discovered that tbe ngur was a man and waa walking to and fro, keepioc an eye on an upper rear win dew of tbe boon be was be hind. Keenan fowad a loos fence picket and wltb It stealthily approached tho figure. There was a thud, a mur dered man, rifted pocket and a body thrown lu an open bunker of the bouse tbe figure bad been watching. Then Keenan went off with a gold watch and chain aud a bandred dol lar In money. Not long after the murder Keenan. wbo waa in a distant city, saw It stated In a newspaper that Hugh Gregory. tho owner of tbe bouse la the bunk er of whleh the body bad been found, had been arrested for murder. The article also stated, that Gregory was past fifty, tbe murdered man under twenty.flve. Tbe young man was Ev- eret Sturgls and a visitor at Gregorys I bouse. Tbe chain of evidence connect ing Gregory witb the niurder waa not given. Those sly fellows the police were too smart to give anything away before the proper time. It waa this matter of the police tbat I Interested Keenan. Tbey bad once I proved him gullry of a crime be bad : not committed, aud he wua curious to know how their Ingenuity would work : In proving a man guilty of a crime that be (Keenan) had committed. So he laid low, living on tbe proceeds of , the murder and raklug no great risk 1 to get more. lie waa absorbed In ; what was called the Bturges murder 1 case. Some of the paper aueorcd at j the police, accusing tbem of endeavor ing to find in Gregory a victim In whom to hide their stupidity. When j Keenan read thla he chuckled. He be-' Ueved that was then object Then came reporta of the trial, which i the real murderer read eagerly. So convincing were tbe anrumentB of the prosecuting attorney that Keenan Bl- ! most beliaved himself lnnoee-it of the j murder uud Gregory the guilt;.- one. ; But when tbe prlsouer'a counsel took j up the case bo 0ud roe uo possible I chance of the prisoucr's couvtctlou. i One thing puzzled him all thj reports , stated that Gregory looked and acted tike a guilty man. Tbe next statement Keenan read fill ed him witb wonder. Gregory bad been convicted, and soon after hla cou- rtctton he bad confessed. Sturges hnd been a suitor for bis daughter's band. Gregory bad bitterly opposed bin. Ou the ulgbt of tbe murder Gregory had gone to bed, to awake at midnight with an uncxplainnble conviction that Sturges was prowling near the house for the pnrnose of eloping witb tbe girl Gregory for some time thought be hod dreamed thut he saw Sturges walking without but so atrong waa tbe conviction tbat this was really so thnt ho got op, dressed, went down stairs, took a stout cane from tbe ball, went o"t, found Sturges and struck him a blow, from which be Bank down. I7c bad no remembrance of putting tbc body in tho bunker and supposed Stur ges must have dragged himself there and died. When Keenan read this . confession be gave a long low whistle of astonish ment Then he began to wonder if he had not been dreaoi.ng himself and Gregory had not after all, killed Stur ges. However, he still bed Sturges watch, which bo bad not dared to sell or pawn, and It was convincing proof that be was the murderer. He puz sled for weoka what he bad better do. He bad no idea ot giving himself up to sore an Innocent man, but be bated tbe police and burned to show up what he considered their Inefficiency. On night Keenan cracked a crib and made a fine haul of ready cash. Then he laid a plan. He bought a second class ticket on a steamer bound for Chile. Just before tbe steamer allied be expressed a small package to tbe Judge before whom Gregory waa tried and at tbe same time mailed the Judge a letter. In half an hour after doing tbla he was out on the Atlantic ocean. Thla la tbe latter be wrote the Judge: Dere Juge. MIKE KEENAN. The watch was identified as having belonged to Sturges, and Keenan, In name, was traced to the prison from which he bad been discharged. Gregory was finally set at liberty, and bis fam ily anlted la trying to convince blm he had dreamed that he killed Sturges. This b will not admit, though he con cedes thnt some mental process akin to dreams may have mad him think that be bad committed murder.
