It Is no good to say tbat sleep Is oul. We see death seldom, but were It more familiar we doubt If a corpse would Inspire so much awe as tbe un conscious and steeping figure a smil ing, Irresponsible doll, flesh and blood, but a doll to whom In a second mny be called a proud, active, controlling consciousness which will ride bis bodi ly and bis mental horse with a band of Iron wbl- h will force tbat body to endure toil and misery and will make tbat mind, now wandering in paths of fantastic folly, grapple with some great problem or throw all Its force Into tbe ruling, the saving or tbe destruction of mankind. A JAPANESE DINNER. Plenty of Variety, but Too Much Salt For A me r teai n Palates. "I am afraid you won't like It, said the young Japanese baron. "You In sisted, though, on a real Japanese din ner. So what was 1 to dor They Bested themselves the three girls and be, uiuu the green silk cunh Ions placed on a parquetry floor about a little table a foot high. A Japanese servant entered with the tea, and. the Japaneew dinner began. Por first course there were sweet bts colt and tea delicate tea of the April harvest, flrst chop tea, formerly served with cherry spoons and a poem for each guest Next come ushlo, a salty soup, with which tbe national wine, called sake, was served in flat saucers. The third course was a little raw fish, very salty and steeped hi a sour and appetising sauce. The guests, con trary to their ex.vectatioo, found tbe raw sash no more difficult to eat than raw .oysters. With this course went a salad of white chrysanthemums. The elaborate fourth course consist ed of boiled chestnuts and a paste of sharks' fins, quail masted and bashed with preserved c he cries and crawfish with eggs. These viands were all ar ranged decoratlvely on one large dish. The fifth course, also on one dish, was bolted bamboo shoots with soy, I salted mushrooms and a cold boiled salmon and cold boiled perch, with pickled shoots of the ginger plant Next came soup of seaweed, bit ter, salty, decidedly good; next an as sortment of nuts boiled In soy; nest salt relishes ; next delicious boiled rice, the grains as large aa cherries, and, to conclude, tea again. Tbe young girls as they rose from tbelr low cushions and limped about In the effort to (n't tho stiffness out of tbelr legs said that the Japanese din ner had been very good, really much better than they had counted on, but perhaps a little too salty for occidental taste. Hand on Petty Thieves and Light on Wife Bestors. It Is only about a century since the death penalty was Inflicted In England for theft not exceeding the value of a sheep. Now some of the London Jour nals are making a merciless exposure of magistrates throughout the kingdom who keep up the tradition by sentenc ing petty thieves to Jail while Inflict ing only trifling fines upon wife beat en and even more brutal offenders. In one police court one defendant was fined 10s. 6d. for knocking his wife down In the street because she refused to give him money for drink. and another wns sentenced to sixty days' Imprisonment for damaging growing potatoes and stealing two footballs. For cruelty to a horse, beating bis wife, who was 111, with fist aud ham mer and leaving her with nothing to at one man was fined 10 shillings, while another, charged with stealing a pair of socks valued at sixpence, got fourteen days bard labor. It .would not be difficult to make up a list of similar cases from American police courts, yet tbe tendency In America Is rather toward a higher estimate of the value of human life. Van Norden Mag axlnt. Australian Curiosities. There are some curious things In cen tral Australia. Luke Amadeus lu tbe sdry season Is merely a sheet of salt Ayers rock, alout five miles round, rises abruptly from tbe desert. For tuerly vast rivers flowed here, and tbe diprotodou, u wouihat-like creature worthy of its name and four times as lurge as a kangaroo, .Unwished on the plains, N'w there ore hardly any ani mals to lie Keen. The fish live In water holes of the till Ix until the floods wush thein clown to the valleys. At the end of tbe wet seasou the water frogs fill themselves with water, roll themselves In tbe mud and lie low till the next rains, which may not cu.ne tor two years. Meanwhile the provident frog, like the "mousl?" of liolwrt Burns, may have the misfortune to furnish n drink to a thirsty black. The natives also get water from tbe roots of trees. They are In the "totem stage and revere certain plants or autmala which protect them. Men of one group can only marry women from another single group. The Need of Common Sense. I had a really scientific man to me the other day, and In tbe course of our investigation of a point we had In common It wns necessary to wash out a bottle. The bottle was empty- It was a round, wabbly vessel, and he had to hold It under the water a long time so tbat It might get full enough of water to hold it down. I asked him why be dt uot All It with water first, and he laughed nnd said be did not think of It. And that bears out my contention that It fs not because a man Is as "clever as paint" tbat be therefore grnsjxs "the common sense of common things." O, H. B. Dabbs In Fry's Uagaxlue.
