Safe-Crnckrrs Attempt to Rob Bank - nt Ciir.pbrll. San Jose, Dec. 18 A desperate a tempt to rob the Uank of Campbell, at Campbell, was made at 2 o'clock yesterday morning by four men, who forced the door of the bank and made three unsuccessful attempts at blowing open the vault door with nitroglycerine. The noise of the re peated explosions awakened a num ber of resldonts of Campbell, when an Investigation disclosed the rob bers busy at their work on the bank. An armed posse was quickly formed and the robber8 were attacked, but escaped In the darkness under a run ning fire of bullets. Sheriff Ross and a force of depu ties are at Campbell, and it is re ported that the officers are hot on tk. trail of the robbers. The attempt at robbery is believed to be the work of experienced' safe crackers, who were foiled by the construction ot the vault. There was a big sum of money In the bank, but none was taken. 1 NINE SAILORS DROWNED. Government Cutter rpaeta While He- turning to Battleship. ' Portsmouth, Eng., Dec. 18. Nine sailors, belonging to the crew of the battleship Hindustan, were jdrowned yesterday, owing to the up setting of a cutter In which they were returning to the warship. There were forty men In the cutter, and all were thrown Into the water. Owing to a heavy fog the boats in the vicinity had difficulty In rescuing thirty-two of the sailors. The oath ot office was administered to Mr. Staua by Fank H. Lamed, chief ot the Bureau ot Immigration. Secretary Motclaf, In relinquishing the duties ot the office, formally ex pressed to those about him his great personal regret at the severance of relation which always had been so pleasant. He assured them, however, that Mr. Staus would maintain sim ilar cordial relations with the people ot the department. Secretary Straus, In a brief address expressed the desire to continue the present relations that existed between Secretary Metcalt and the officials of the department and said that It would be bis policy, so far as might be possible, to continue the policy of his predecessor. He said he would take his cue from tho President, one feature ot whom strength lies in the fact that he could depend upon and enlist the hearty co-operation of those about him. At the conclusion of the address, Secretary Straus and Secretary Metcalf held an Informal reception of the bureau heads. Theodore L. Weed, one of the clerks ot the department, has ben selected .by Mr. Staus to be his pri vate secretary. Leon A. Clarke, who has been private secretary to Secre tary Metcalf, will continue with Mr. Metcalf In a like capacity In the Navy Metcalf arrived at the Navy Department with Secretary Bonaparte at 10:50. The oath of office was admlnstered by Solicitor Hannah, of the Navy Department, In the p.-esence ot Assistant Secretary try, Secretary Metcalf briefly respond ed, declaring that he always had tak en an Interest In the American Nary. At 11 o'clock Charles J. Bon aparte, the retiring Secretary ot the Navy, took the prescribed oath as at torney general and entered upon his new duties. The obligation was administered by Mr. Sorenberger, the appointment clerk In the Depart ment of Justioe, In the presence of Mr. Bonaparte'e predecessor, William H. Moody, the Assistant Attorney General, the Solicitor . General and the principal officers ot the Depart ment of Justice. Mr. Moody was the first to offer congratulations. Silas Horsford, whose farm abuts the Dan bury branch of the New Haven road, knowa the ways of Procldence are Incrutable. He has been praying for fodder for his hens for the winter. A freight train of twenty-three cars .was wrecked by his place yesterday. Twenty-two oars were smashed.
