Ik there is a political tnau of either political party that Bryan hasn't his knife out for always excepting William J. himself wo would be pleased if somebody would supply his name. The Japanese, who are talking of entering a boat in next year's race, have a choice of several routes for getting inla American waters, but their quickest plan would be to have it built in this country. C a it in k Nation is to star in "Ten Nights in a Barroom." If she follows the system she used to whon sho didn't confine ber self to one barroom the property man for that show will have a strenuous job, Tun St. Louis Globe-Democrat is authority for the statement that thirty-six robberies at the point of revolvers have occurred in St. Louis since July 4th. This is encouraging for those who are thinking of at tending the exposition there next year. : A man in Minneapolis chopped off his right hand with an axe, in litoral fulfillment of the Biblioal injunction that -,if thy right baud offend theo, cut if oh"." He olaimed that his right baud had broken the law of-God and tluit he preferred to lose hie hand rather than bis soul. reveling in the proud consciousness' of being defendant in a $10,000 suit for libel. The suit is brought by R. I). Hume, of Wedderburn, and is based on some remarks the Ob server has been making about Hume concerning the' Rogue river fishing business. It has been a question in some people's minds as to the relative destructiveness of the cable car and the automobile. The first round was decided in favor of the former, at Sau Francisco, when an automo bile smashed itself up trying to butt two street cars off the track. However the "mobile" might have been successful if there had been hut one car. Tim people of Ashland will vote at a special election to be Held on October 3d, on the question of issu ing city bonds in the sum of $20,- 000, for the purpose of establishing a sewerage system. The proposi tion is to make the outlet of the newer upon ground owned or leased by the city by the moBt approved sanitary methods. It will be but a matter of a year or two until Med ford will be up against about the same conditon of affairs; fact is, it is more of a condition than a theory which confronts us right now. It's about time we were "getting buBy" on that sewerage proposition. Tiik l'o-tland Chamber of Com merce has figured out that Oregon will ship out 800 carloads of com mercial apples this year as against 700 last year. Of this amount it is estimated the Hogue river valley will furnish 'ISO carload, all the remaining portion of tie state 350 carloads. Tub investigation of police meth ods in Portland is either disclosing a rottenness of the whole system, or somebody is doing a whole lot of lying. .Starling with the trial of a special officer for accepting money from Baloon keepers in the "bad lands" for "protection," it has in volved about' the whole force, the chief of police included. Biiotiikii Ciiai'ssk, of the Ore gon Observer at Grants Pass, is Tiik roster of the crew of the cup-defender, Reliance, gives one some idea of the nationality of the people who are keeping the "old mug" on this Bide of the Atlantic. Here are the names of a few of them who are kicking because they didn't get any honors for winning the races: Christ Emanueslen, Michael Bordson, Martin Clausen, Chri9t Nelson and Savarian Christ onsen. They all may be good Americans, probably are, but the names don't sound right Isn't it about time we quit braegiug about our American superiority, when chances are if you had called one of that crew a Swede, the joke would have been on you, because the man would have ''bane Norwa- gan all der tame?" A man goes into Wall street and bets thousands of dollars that a certain stock will go up or down that's business. He goes out to the race track and bets that a certain horse will come in first that's sport, fte goes into a back room, site all night in a smoke laden, drink laden atmosphere and bets that his hand is worth more than the other fellow's that's gambling, and the man is liable to be arrested for it. Do you see any difference? Any moie than the first two are carried on openly and the man is playing another man's game, while, when he plays poker, he plays his own. It'a true also that the expert gets the man's money quicker in Wall street and on the turf, than when it has to be won at poker but he gets it juat the same. 1905 fair unless they get "regular rates." Do you see why half the people of the East imagine Oregon is a country in California, or a part of the suburbs of Seattle. Can't you see why Oregon products are comparatively unknown and California's are known all over the world. Get out of that old rut. Stop being so everlasting jealous that you have to call in a- doctor to straighten yon out every time vour competitor does a little stroke of business. Do some business your self. Work, advertise, let people know that you want to do bust ness, and pretty soon you will have so much to do that you won't have time to be envious of anyone else. Tiik resignation of Hon. W. S. Crowell, as mayor of the city of Medford, which was banded to the city council at its special meeting on Saturday night, came rather in the nature of a surprise to many of the citizens of the town, and a ma jority will regret the retirement of Mr. Crowell from office. During the three years that Mayor Crowell Ins been at the head of municipal aflairs in this city he has labored conscientiously for the advance ment and well-being of the city and its inhabitants, Every official actbn of the retiring mayor has been taken with a view to the betterment of the conditions in our city, and he has not spared himself in his endeavors to build up Medford. Mayor Crow- ell retires from office with the re spect and regard of every fair minded citizen of the town, who, while some few of them may not have agreed with him in every par ticular, all must admit the honest conscientious efforts he has made in behalf of the municipality. His successor, J. R. Wilson, has been a member of the city council for four years, and there is no more level headed judgmatical business man in the city than our new mayor Mr. Wilson always" looks upon every side of a question before he makes a move, but, his mind once made up as to the proper course to pursue, it requires eubsantial evi dence to change his views. We predict that the administration of Mayor Wilson will reflect credit upon himself and the citizens of Medford alike. rpiIPF.I.V PF.PSONAll! Tim people of San Francisco are cheerfully figuring on expending $2,325,000 for additional parks within the oity, while the Silurians of Oregon are howling because the state appropriated a little bit of money for the Lewis and Clark Fair.
