Fifteen People Porlsh and Many
Burned Out of House and Horn In
the Lewis ' River Reglor, Clark
County, Wash.
Kalma, Wash., Sept. 15. A messen
ger from Lewis Rivor. Clark county,
arrived hero yesterday morning with
the Information that only two houses
are left standing on that stream, from
the Strait place io the head ot the
river, a distance ot thirty miles, and
that fifteen persons have perished.
b. L. Wallaco, wife and two chil
dren were camping In the woods wheu
caught by the Are; their charred bod
ies were lying near their wagon. A
12-year-old boy named Hanlcy, Mrs.
John Polly, her baby and brothor
(name not known and Mr. Nowhouse
)and Mrs. Graves are dead.
Fifteen others, who were found
without clothing except gunnysacks,
escaped by wading Into th center of
the creek and keepingouly Jioir heads
above water. A crowd of refugees
from Allan' & White s mill, near Cen
tralla, had a similar experience. Find
ing themselves surrounded by fires
thoy fled to the creek, whore thoy
dipped the children constantly, while
the adults jumped in occasionally.
By this procedure, and keeping wrup
ped in blankets,, they wore able, to
endure the heat until the fire came
near, when they abandoned the stream
and went into the center ot a small
meadow surrounded by burning tim
ber. Here they found themselves pre
ceded by many other fugitives from
the flame rabbits, bears and deers,
all equally panlcstrlcken. The mead
ow proved a safe refuge until the
flames died away.
Tacoma, Wash., Sept. 15. Absence
of wind has prevented the fires from
spreading into new territory, and the
blanket ot smoke which overhangs
the state is gradually drifting away.
The., fire has been the greatest In
the state's history. Elma, although
badly scorched, has been saved; like
wise Enumclaw. Shelton is out of
danger. The fate ot Mattlock, In Ma
son county, is unknown.
At. Plum, near Olympia, Elan Col
lins was gored by a bull that had be
come maddened by smoke and- dark
ness, and an Olympia physician rode
through fire to save Collins' lite.
Captain W. J. Bryant, inspector ot
hulls, and A. P. Stockwell, an Ameri
can lumberman, had a thrilling twelve
mile ride through the blazing forests
Thursday afternoon, barely escaping
wtih their lives. Fifteen minutes after
they passed through New London that
village caught fire and was soon de
stroyed. They were saved by their
team of thoroughbreds, which kept
Just ahead of the rapidly advancing
fire.
Portland, Ore., Sept. 15. For the
most part the forest nres in this vicin
ity have burned themselves out. Hun
dreds of people in this and adjacent
counties have been made homeless,
and the loss in timber and farm houses
will be many hundreds of thousands
of dollars. There' Is no prospect of
rain and until It does come conditions
will not Improve.
- Sixty people in the town of Spring
water, Clackamas county, were forced
to flee for their lives, and a fine tim
ber belt is destroyed. Bridges were
attacked and residences threatened in
South Portland. The sawmill of the
Bridal Veil Lumbering company and
the whole town of Palmer, situated
twenty miles east of Bridal Veil, In
this county, has been destroyed.
A woman was burned to death near
Vancouver, Wash., and a woman and
a child are missing. Mills, lumber and
timber to the vaiue ox $1,000,000 were
estroyed in Chehalis county,, Wash
ington. The damage near Lents, Ore.,
amounts to over $25,000.

scenes occurred yesterday at Clapham,
whore nearly 5,000 persons attempted
to nipb a former Episcopalian clergy
man named Piggott, who is now the
leader of a sect called the "Agapomon

in the matter to such a point lhat Pig

8AID PRESIDENT WILL SEND
ULTIMATUM TO HAYTI.
Washington, Sept. IB. It la report
ed here that the president has decided
to send an ultimatum to lla.fl within
a very short time.
The cause ot this decision is said to
ho that the United Status does not
want to run the risk of bocomlng In
volved with sumo European power by
reason qt the ropentod outbreaks In
tlaytl, A spectacular Instance of which
was the sinking by Germany ot Ad
miral Killlck s vessel, the Crctivn-l'I-orrot.
.
tt Is seen hero that ocra jlons may
arise In which tho forcible entry ol
foreign war vessels nto tho harbors
ot republics like tlaytl may denmad In
tervention by thu United States aud
a foreign war as a probable conse
quence; Tho story Is that tho govern
ment will notify Hayti that peace
must bo declared and that tt must bu
put on a firm basis. If those assur
ances cannot be had, it Is said that tho
United States will feel justified in In
torvontlon by sending a squadron to
Hayti to carry out tho program.
It Is, ot course, understood that In
tervention, if not acceptable to the
Hoytions, would cud In n war and the
outcome of that would not bo clear,
possibly annexation.
Tho roport then goes further to the
effect that an intimation has been
made to some high officers of the nnvj
department to be ready for an oniorff
ency with reforenco to Hayti.
