It la report ed here that the president has decided to send an ultimatum to lla.fl within a very short time. The cause ot this decision is said to ho that the United Status does not want to run the risk of bocomlng In volved with sumo European power by reason qt the ropentod outbreaks In tlaytl, A spectacular Instance of which was the sinking by Germany ot Ad miral Killlck s vessel, the Crctivn-l'I-orrot. . tt Is seen hero that ocra jlons may arise In which tho forcible entry ol foreign war vessels nto tho harbors ot republics like tlaytl may denmad In tervention by thu United States aud a foreign war as a probable conse quence; Tho story Is that tho govern ment will notify Hayti that peace must bo declared and that tt must bu put on a firm basis. If those assur ances cannot be had, it Is said that tho United States will feel justified in In torvontlon by sending a squadron to Hayti to carry out tho program. It Is, ot course, understood that In tervention, if not acceptable to the Hoytions, would cud In n war and the outcome of that would not bo clear, possibly annexation.
