What Is the ni)swvr?-Ualtluorv American. Repairing Neatly ' Done Never thought of such a sign for a medicine did you ? Well, it's a good sign for Scott's Emulsion. The body 'ias to be repaired like other liings and Scott's Emulsion is the medicine that does it. These poor bodies wear out from worry, from over-work, from disease. They get thin and weak. Some of the new ones arc not well made and all of the old ones are racked from long usage. Scott's Emulsion fixes all kinds. It does the work both inside and out. It makes soft bones' hard, thin blood red, weak lungs strong, hollow places full. Only the best ma terials are used in the patching and the patches don't show through the new glow of health. Th weather in this vicinity tiday is blight and clear, but high wind empbaiized the cold. In this city Lewis Or-luwi-ki, aged 70 years, was, found dead early today on the street, ap parently as a result of exposure to the cold. Details from the Ptorm that raged for three days in the Dakotas are blow to arrive, oiii(i principally to the' condition of the wires. At least four and possibly many more persons are dead be cause of the storm, and the loss ol slock will be very heavy. The storm was filt most by the new settlers, and heavier loss of life is feared among these people. All trains are still tied up in North Dakota, although rotary plows and large crews have been working steadily in an attempt to clear tho track for through tmins. Death of James C. Tolman. Tho death of General James Clark Tolman at bin home in Ashland on Sat 11 mJ ly moraine lat remove one of tin uintt prominent pioneer figures in South ern Oregon history. Gen. Tolmun wub born in Ohio diirlm the early settle ment of that state anil came to Cali fornia witti the Ili-Hl of the fold fceekcrF. j He afterward returned lo Iowa, wheie j he was married to Miss Elizabeth Cue, I and 111 I8.rj2 crossed the plains as in. pliot mid captain ol a truiu of uo wagons. The train reached reka 11 eighty-two davs, without the los of a: animal, although compelled to tiaht their way through the Modoc country. Gon. Tolman and part of the train crossed the Siskivuug Into the Rogue Uiver valley, being the first settler U come from the east direct. When tbe state government was or ganized In 1 808 Mr. Tolman was elected county judge of Jackson County and was re-elected io 1862, although tbe county was overwhelmingly Demo cratllc. He was nominated lor governor on the Republican ticket in 1874, but was defeated. In 1878 he was appointed surveyor-general of Oregon by Presi dent Hayes and reappointed by Presi dent Arthur in 1?2. Gen. Tolman, in tbe early '50's went to Coos County and lived there fortume time, finally returning to Jackson County. During hi- (tar in Coos County he took up a donation claim on the s te of the present city of Marshfltld and started that town. Be was eighty-nine years and three days of ace at the time of bis death. Lakevicw Experiences Earthquake Shocks. From the L&kevlew KxamtneM The people of Lnkeview have been aroused in a high pitch of excitement during the past week In fact the excite ment borders on terror with some peo ple who have before experienced tbe vi brations from earthquake shocks, where Hi ev have seen buildings topple over and fall about them and the earth come np and "shake" bands with them. No such calamity haB thus far sent the people of Lakevicw terror-stricken to a place of safety, and doubtless no such a thing will occur. But it is true nevertheless, that our people have for the past week experienced forcible vi brations of the earth. Some say the first shock was fell last Thursday night, but the- heaviest one occurred at 10:83 on Saturday evening, followed by light vibrations at early hourB on Sunday morning. Again on Sunday evening at 9:07 a light shock was felt, and on Mon day nlcbt at 10:30 the earth tremb'ed. The Saturday evening shook "rattled" things up considerably including tho nerves of the more timid people. Some believe tho quake widened the breach In the south wall of the Odd Fellows hall, or the Field building, whileothers who have been watching the break think the wall was not affected much by the quake, , At any rate the trouble has caused a sensation in Lnkeview, and the strange visitor is much talked about. Japan hus perhaps the shortest of nil I national anthems. It Is called "Klml i Ua Vo," from Its first three words, and , consists of thlrtv-two syllables, which I count In nootrv. however, ns thlrtv-one. I The exccedliiK brevity Is due to the national fondness for conciseness of phrase and for ecouomy of expression in all forms of art. The patriotic song Is what tbe Japa nese call a "tnnka," or verse of live lines, the first and third being of five 1 and the others of seven syllables. An Empire Sold at Auction. The Roman empire was once sold to the highest bidder. On the death of Pertlnax in 103 the Prrclorlan guards put up the empire for sale by auction, and, after un animated competition be tween Hulplelan and Jull.iu. it was knocked down to Ihc latter for U.250 drachmas. The Romans held auctions of various kinds, tbe .proceedings be ing much the same In all cases. The auctio sub bnst.i. which was a sale of plunder, was held trader a spear stuck in the ground. Tbe inngister auetionis. or auctioneer, was chosen from among the argeutnrll, or money changers, and bis assistants were the cashiers. Perhaps! How many people when they marry carefully put aside their joint lore let ters as one of tbe most cherished pos sessions of their future life, and In bow many cases afterward do they ever take them out and look at them? Now, why Is this? The mountain Is tba highest in the range, and on a clear day, It is said, one can see Sandy Hook from the summit. Half way uu the mountain there Is a deep cleft In the rocks, at the bottom of which is a spring. From some bidden point water fulls into the spring with a steady dropping not unlike the ticking of a watch.
