And yet there are people who claim that women are losing their influence in the home. C. P. Huntington's estate has made so much money since his death that Russell Sage must be tempted to die aud save expenses while his fortune keeps on piling up. Telephones are to be recon structed so as to provide for sight, as well as hearing. This will have a tendency to still further increase the annoyance resulting from cross wires. Either 500 children were named after Mark Hanna in the last four years, or 500 parents have consid ered him an easy maik for a contri bution to the well being of their little Marks. A Texas farmer had a suggestive bunch last spring and planted 300 acres to Irish potatoes. Now he could run for Congress or do any other foolish thing he wanted to without exciting adverse comment. Hon. C. V. Fulton, of Astoria, Eas publicly announced his can didacy for the United States sena torship, to succeed Senator Simon. Mr. F. has been industriously fixing up his fences for several months past. Everybody seems to imagine they have a license to bump the Ben Davis apple, still there are many rchardists in Jackson County who an attribute a good part of their bank accumulations to the pro ductiveness of this variety of apple. Editors who smoke need not fear cancers. An English physician says the uancer comes from smoking the high-priced cigars that royalty uses say the $1 a piece kind. The three for-ten kind that editors smoke contain no cancer germs. They don't contain much of anything aside from floor sweepings, old cop per rivets, plate glass chippings, ebeee rinds and work apron ravel 5ngs. Evidently the higher cultiva tion is in need of some polishing up. A lot of cows were lately shot by a party of New York hunters under the impression that they were lerd of deer. In view of this and the many casualties of the Maine hunting fields, natural history ought to be insisted on as a neces' eary branch in the schools, or the fool hunter kept out of farmers pasture fields. The New York Evening Post finds that one hundred and fifty thousand pianos weie sold in the united States in 1901, many of which went to the west, especially Oregon, Kansas and northern Cali fornia. The record for pianos es tablished in 1892 one hundred and twenty five thousand instruments has heretofore been made insignifi cant. The fact that the people of the west have heretofore bought or gans, and that the general prosper ity ' has put pianos within their means, argues well for the state of things in this section. - A Kansas newspaper man ex presses bis thanks to a fruit grower for some Ben Davis apples, which leads the discriminating Toneka Capital to ask, ''What do you think f 11 man who ultima thanks for a uift of Ben Dnvis apples?" However, the Hen Davis is a good producer and a fairly good roller at a price ' con siderably lower than the Newtown, Spiizenberg or Baldwin. Senator Mitchell has reported from tho special committee of west ern senators and representatives n bill prohibiting Chinese immigra tion from any of the insular posses sions of the United States. The section creating the most discussion was No. 2, which was finally adopted by the committee to read as follows: "That from and after the passage o! this. act the entry into tho Amer ican mainland territory of the United States of Chinese laborer.' coming from any of the insular possessions of tho United states shall be absolutely prohibited, and such prohibition shall apply to all Chinese laborers, as well those who were in suuh insular possessions at the time of the acquision thereof by the United States as those who may come there hereafter, and those who may be hereafter born there." The bill in a general way extends in definitely the exclusion law. It was referred to the senate committee on immigration. AN OVERFLOWING TREASURY. At a time when the chief nations of Europe are looking for new ob jects of taxation so as to make in come meet outgo, the United States is confronted with an overflowing treasury, and with the advisibility of abolishing some of its taxes. Secretary Gage has just made a comparason between the condidtons now and those which existed at the beginning of the Republican sway On April 1st, 1S97, which was the beginning of the first month after tbe Republicans entered power, th treasury had a cash balance, includ ing the f 100,000,000 gold reserve, of about $150,000,000. At the pre? ent moment the treasury has !f29'5; 000,000 of cash including the gold fund, which is, under tbe law of 1900, fixed at $150,000,000 nearly twice the cash it had at the earlier date. But this is only one of the many respects in which the country's fi nanciai condition has been im proved since the Republicans re sumed sway in the government The money in circulation at the time the Republicans entered power was $23.14 per capita. It was $28.73 at the beginning of De cember, 1901, and it is doubtless higher than that point now. Moreover, the sort of money which is in circu ation has improved in the interval. While the gold and gold certificates in circulation at the beginning of McKinley's first term was $554,000,000, it was $914 000,000 at the beginning of Decern ber, a month ago, and it is at a higher mark to-day. In the Dem ocratic days which ended early in 1897 gold was hoarded in a large degree. Almost everybody who bad it hung on to it, because he feared the' country's currency would drop to the silver basis, and that gold would go to a premium. Of course, a comparison between piesunt conditions and thoso for the early part of 1S97 is hardly fair for the Republicans, for tho Republican victory in No vember, 1890, brought a complete ralloy in all sorts of business, and sent tho level of the treasury's cash and of tho country's great ac tivities up. But evon taking ISO" as a starting point, a sweeping and comprehensive improvement has been scored since then, which will stand as a striking tributes to the sanity and courage of the Republi can party.
