There are said to be anarch ists in Medford. They are proba bly found in all localities but out side, of the larger cities they are not f sufficient number and strength to cause alarm, but wherever found they should be dealt with by the law which governs treason. James J. If we could imagine a great big partnership of 7 0,000,000 persons where each man, woman and child performed an equal amount of work and contributed an equal amount of energy, - where sluggards and drones were unknown, and human avarice and greed banished from the minds of men, it might be pos sible to bring about a plan fashioned after socialism. But human nature deorees the survival of the fittott in all walks and vooations of life. Whether on the fa rm, in the work shop or professional lines, some fall by the wayside and are lost Bight of. Their reverses and mis fortunes can generally be traced to their own aots, mistakes of judg ment or some weakness. Others forge ahead and reaoh a higher point. Under socialism as preached by the leaders of that political party, competition would be de stroyed. The youth in school, who now struggles to stand a t the head of his class, would have no incen tive to lead. It would destroy ambition, genious and pride. It would ohange the entire system of government and not remedy the defects of our present system. It would lead to degeneration and decay, instead of improvement and upbuilding. Theoretically it is a nice thing for the discontented and unthrifty, the unsuccessful and the jealous to advocate, but otherwise it is dangerous and unwis9." Albany Democrat. Governor Geer's Expressed Qrtef. News of the . assassination of Presi dent McKinley came as a most severe shock to all the state officials, and espe cially to Governor Geer, who has formed a personal acquaintance with the president. In speaking of this most ijrnob'e and cowardly attack upoo the notion's chief executive, Governor Geer said: "I connot conceive how a man in possession of his Benses could deliber ately attempt to take the life of so good a man, and without the slightest provo cation. So far as I know, McKinley is a man without a personal enemy in the world. Unless the assassin Is insane, this attack must be taken as an attempt not only upon the life of the president, but upon the government, of which he is the head. While no good that may come of this murderous assault can in the least mitigate the enormity of the crime, this assassination will have the effect of awakening tbe people to a full realization of the dangerous elements that have been permitted to grow up in our midst, and will unite all law- abiding citizens in an effort to drive out anarcby. This attack must be taken as an indication of the plans of anarchists in this country, and the people will not be slow to take proper measures for the . protection of their -HjoverBmeirt and its officers. "I cannot express the grief I feel over this unfortunate affair. Ia the few' times I have met President Mc- jKinley my acquaintunce lias ripened into a strong feeling of personal friend ship. While we were in San Francisco last summer to attend the launching of the Ohio, -Mrs. Geer and myself enjoyed a very pleasant visit with the president, at which time I learned more of bis admirable personal qualities and conse quenrly came to esteem mm more highly than ever before. Ankeny and family arrived here last Friday from the Rogue river valley to visit and en joy the fishing and scenic resorts hereabouts. Mr. Ankeny is aleo looking after his large interests in this county. He talks very fair, indeed, in reference to preserving the property of those through whose lots in town the irrigating ditch runs, and we believe he will do everything possible to reduce such damage to a minimum.
