What is the object ?of having a representative , 'in "congress, or for thai matter, of having .reprenenta tWn in a company; corporation, pol itical convention; or anything else? Manifestly, to aflbrd an opportunity to call attention to, explain and ask consideration of such local, personal or general interest aa may need at tention. It is then a matter of busi ness. Certainly nothing else. The position of representative in congress is not one of ornament and pleasure aa might be inferred from muoh that is said concerning it, but one of labor and responsibility.'. Then, if the position is one. of business as it certainly is and. Oregon has many important interests requiring attention, what is the duty of the state at thiB time in the selection of a United States senator? Obviously to choose the man best fitted to Derformtbe work to be done.- If business ib the object, and there can be none other, it mustle . con ceded that Hon. H. Corbett baa no superior and few if. any equals in the slate as a business ' man, and that he understands perfectly the nesds of the state, and Pacific coast as well, no one who knows him will doubt for a moment. At no time in the history of the Pacifio states has a wise and careful statesman chip been so essential as at the pres ent. "The business interests of the coast are vitally . involved in proper solution . of .; the eastern questions as they arise from time to time for the consideration1 of congress. . The best talent of - the United States will oiten be. re quired to devise a policy which will avoid eastern entanglements . and vet preserve ' amicable relations and invite and stimulate trade and commerce. Mr. Corbett's excep- ' tional business qualifications, joined to a critical knowledge of civic law. and extended information upon all questions of international comity will render his wise counsel ' inval liable during' the critical . period upon which the country is just en . tering. The requirements ' of the state are bo varied : and ' pressing - that H" cannot attora to-eieevi : small or indifferent man to: jepre sent it. The Christmas eve exorcises at the Christian Church were highly enjoyed ty young and old, and many cf both classes were present, the house bein thoroughly crowded. The audience was ospe- cmlly delighted with the cantata, '"The Charmed Garden,", in which the seven fairies, the shepherd lads and sand man all performed their parts well nigh to perfection. Miss Erma Wlyle and Miss Pearl Webb deserve . muoh credit for the careful train(jig given in' the preparation of the program.. Not the least Interesting part of the evening exercises was the distribution- of the presents from the -trees,' andbrlbks from the garden wall,. which proved to lie boxes well filled with candy and nuts. The groom Is a young man well known throughout the county and has a great many friends who are extending their heartiest congratulations. . MIbs Anna Rodsohou were married, by Judge James Stewart. A grand wedding din ner was spread after the ceremony and good cheer prevailed everywhere and congratulations were bestowed in great numbers.
