These are the kind of claims that pay as the work progresses, and encourage the iniper to more strenuous efforta.''" ' Tlie Isabel mine, a valuable proposition situated on Green mountain in the Galice creek dU: trict, was bonded a short time since toW. T.Emery and J. L Wal- stein, of Oukland, California. The mine was discovered by the Marlin Bros, two or three years ago, and has been considered a very promis-' ing property from its first discovery, It was bonded for (8000, and Messrs Emery & Walstein will commence systematic development work on a lorge scale at once. McClure & Cox, who are opening a large and promising ledge near Gold Hill, have about 150 tons of ore ready for crushing, and from careful tests which have been made of it, it is ezpeoted to average some thing above $40 per ton. The vein is sbout three feet wide and. gives evidence of being Remanent. The owners are confident of the value of the property, and propose to prose cute systematic development work with all speed, with a view to plac ing it in the best condition possible as a woi king proposition. A. W. Sturgis, the boss miner of Forest creek, who owns about 600 acres of the richest mining ground in Southern Oregon, brought over 110 ounces in dust, Monday, from another partial clean-up of his sluices. This makes something over 350 ounces Mr. Sturgis has taken from his boxes this year, and he has not cleaned up a foot of bedrock yet. Mr. Sturgis expects to cloar $20,000 from this season's work. His proposition will .last for the next half dozen generations, and there will still be lots of good ground left. It is astonishing what a practical examination of the ledges of South ern Oregon is disclosing. " Veins, large and small, are being discov ered in every direotion, and hardly one can be found but is in some k gree mineralized, and ' a percentage of them, hitherto 'unsuspected, carrying gold In paying quantities. There are) at this time not leas than 300 ledges in course of development in the oounty,- and many of them with' the most flattering prospects of becoming permanent and paying properties, and about thirty mills already running on tbem. The mines of Southern Oregon have only commenced to be prospected. What they will develop in the next ten years it would be difficult lo foresee. The two large placer properties at Waldo, owned and operated re spectively by Simmons & Cameron and Wimer. Bros., oro still running on full time and with a . full force ot men.- Those hydraulic, proposir tions are specially favored in the prime consideration of an abundant water supply, and can. run at full capacity night and day for .a long period during each season. The valuo of a placer property dopends lnrgoly, in fact,' almost wholly, up on its avaUablo wator supply. . Of. course, the first consideration is as to the gold it contains;, the second, the water to tako it out. So far as llio valuo of the claims, roforred to. is concoruod, there is no i question. They aro in ' tho heart. 'of a pro ominently rioh placer seotiou -and HO. 15. have been large gold producers for more than forty years, and . will continue, to yield of their rich, stores for the nextj fifty years to come. Both -companies : expect an un usually, large clean-up this season: - McWilliamB k Casey- neve been running their mill -on Jackoo creek stetdjjy for the past .feu days er more on fairly good ore, and - they report everything in , connection with it as working like a charm and to their entire satisfaction. ; The Maiu ias not been able to learn the value of tbe ore: per ton,' but has been promised upon a personal ex animation ol tne nnli and ledges, a report such as the owners may feel justified, in making at tbe time. That the property is valuable does not now admit of a question. There is an immense body of ore in the big ledge, and while it is generally considered to be low grade, it con tains many rioh stratas which bring it up to a high average,.: Mo Wil liams & Casey are thoroughly . qual ified business men of large experi ence, and what is better still,, they are rustlers and men of onnsual en terprise. ' This property is destined to be one of the leading gold "pro ducers of the county. :;;..:' EARLY RECOLLECTIONS OF ALTHOCSE ' ' MINTNO CAMP. , v: The discovery of the rich mining camp 'oh Althouse . creek created more intense excitement,' perhaps, than any other of the many excit ing discoveries which were made m Southern-Oregon in an early, day. This was due m part -to the. find ing of mrirjy large nuggets, which seemed tp be a -''specialty ,;of, the camp, and which were . shown around stud the news " heralded abroad, cadsing' an excited rush of miners fronv all directions to -the great camp6f big specimens;. ' The creek was discovered in the spring or earlytsummer' of '53,' and by fall, when the writer was there, the camp was. alive with ' men. " 'The gorge in which the town of ' Alt- house was, situated waB a very bee hive of surging, bustling humanity, and all Inspired by the one supreme and all-absorbing thought of- gold, Tho townlf such it could be called, was a pichiresque job lot of tents, bajrk wickiups, improvised lodging camps and primitive shake houses, with poles Set in the ground!, and sided . up with clapboards, and, all skirted anijiflanked about by iui. ui;.uic, luwwwniiiers caDine. built of, small poles. The place was a. veritable variegated menag erie of human lif1 in undress: Like, all early mining : tfcamps, Althouse was . preeminently 'fooemopolitanV Here were seen - the Jew - and the Gentile, the Turk and the Swede, the Englishman and the German, the Pole and the Frenchman, the Scandinavian - and ... the - Switzer. It will ever remain a great marvel, and one worth ' consideration, as' tending to prove the 'nniversal brotherhood of man, that such an' incongruous and non-assimilative. mass of people, collected . together irom the four .quarters of the earth, under the stress of intense excite ment and anxietyvt should ; have worked and mingled and fraternized together in the mad rush with so little trouble and friction. In look ing back over the early history oi mining on the coast and consider ing the unorganized 'condition of society and government, it is strange indeed that so few racial,, sectional . or provincial troubles should have -occurred, r Every man was 'a. law unto himself so long as he'v elected to do right, but when he trenched . upon tbe rights of-his fellow man ' the Btern justice cf the honeBt miner was quica w cjii uim . w account. The discovery of gold on the Pacific coast established two ' facts ' oeyohot any reasonable question: First, that civilization is much, the .same .the world 'over; second, that the , pre dominating impulse of man in the aggregate ; is" toward ; the ends, of justice.. ..
