The Chinese in Chicago contemplate! constructing a Confucian temple in that city The four companies composing 'what is known as the gas trust of Chicago have prepared a bill for presentation to the legislature at its session next year granting them permission to consoli date. ; There is a statute at present in the way and that would have to be re pealed. The Ogdcn and Mutual Fuel Gas companies are the only independ ent concerns and they will remain out of the combination. The Iowa Prohibitory Cigarette law seems to be knocked out. The tobacco trust has discovered that the State law cannot be enforced because it inter feres with the interstate commerce law. Shipments of cigarettes were re ceived from New York and sold in the original five-cent packages. The bodies of George Edwin Dean, aged 12 years, and John Sinclair, aged 9, were taken from the Des Moines river. Kmuia Taylor, an orphan 15 years old, who was recently released from a house of refuge at Kansas City is in jail charged with complicity in recent train robberies. She made masks for the robbers. Two masked ineu held up a street car in Chicago and secured over $MO0 from passengers. One of the men was caught but the money was not recovered. A club has been incorporated in New Jersey whose membership is composed of titled scions of European nobility with empty purses who seek to trade titles for rich American girls. Miss Nellie Fisher, a well known and popular young woman of Hamburg, Ind., hung herself in a barn w hile des pondent over the fact that her mother had married the daughter's lover. A pugilist- won a match at Sedalia, Mo., in a novel manner. His opponent struck him on the head with such force as to break his wrist, thus being dis abled, and the match was given to the man of the thick skull. Tl theosophical societies are talking Of establishing a college at Chicago for the purpose of studying out the hidden mysteries of life. About a hundred families iu Milwau kee were poisoned a few days ago by bread bought at a bakery. How arsenic came to be in the bread is not stated. The present danger from floods in the Chippewa valley in Wisconsin is reported as past. Jce gorges threat ened destruction to several towns. William J. Bryan is receiving letters at the rate of 2500 a dav since the elec tion, and has four clerks writing replies and is still way behind with his corres pondence. National aid will bo asked for the big Butto reservoir to be located on the Gila. If secured and the dam is built it w ill bo the largest artificial luko in the world. It will back up the water for twenty miles and irrigate a whole county. Dr. Jameson has been released from jail by order of the homo secretary on medical grounds. Cracksmen blew open a safe at Omaha and secured $5000 in cash and diamonds. Dynamite was used but no one hoard the explosion. The list shows that the house will be composed of 204 Repub licans, 124 Democrats, 13 FusionisU, 12 Populists and 3 Silverites, and that there is one vacancy from the first Missouri district. Of the total mem bership 205 were in the last house and 10 others had served in previous con gresses. The executive committee having in charge the arrangements for the na tional monetary conference of commer cial bodies, to be held at Indianapolis, changed the date for the conference from January 5th to January 12th. The foundation of the sugar factory building at Los Alaraitos is all laid and everything is now ready for the steel frames. W. A. Piatt, a well known poultry man and musician of Petaluma, was badly hurt a few days ago by a fall from his bicycle. A. L. Mechling was so badly frozen from' exposure in the mountains in Washington that it was found neces sary to amputate both feet The ladies of the Wednesday Club of San Diego are making an effort to raise funds for the building of a public library in that city. The ponds cf the different ice com panies around Truckee are frozen over to a sufiicicnt thickness to permit skat ing. William, the 10-year-old son of W. A. Markley, was perhaps fatally in jured at his home in Eureka by being kicked in the head by a horse. X. N. Steeves, a Portland attorney, is on trial iu Hiilsboro, Or., for com plicity in the murder of George W. Sayres about two years ago. While hunting at Donner lake re centy W. 1L Thomas killed a gray eagle. It was a large one, measuring 6 feet. 4 inches from tip to tip. The board of trustees of Sacramento, Cal., has passed an ordinance prohibit ing, under penalty of a fine, expecto rating upon the pavements of the city. It is reported that the Southern Cali fornia Rail road (Wipauy has signed a contract for building the long-delayed extension of the line from San Jacinto to Lakeview, and that the work of lay ing the track will begin soon. The educators and school officers of Montana now have an organization peculiarly their own. It is called the State Educational Club. A German newspaper asserts that about 30,000 of the inhabitants of Ber lin hear considerably better with their left ear than with their right. This has been observed in continually increasing measure for 15 years. When the cause was sought for, it appeared that those who are thus affected are frequent users of the telephone. The listening part of tho instrument is generally held in the left hand and put to the ott ear, while the right hand is often used in taking notes, etc. In the cases observed the subjects heard tho slightost sound through the telephone with their left ears, but could understand little or nothing if the instrument were put to their right ears. It is therefore con cluded that the telephono has an appre ciably stimulating effect on the auditory nerves, and the recommendation is made that tho instrument be used' alter nately at the right and left car. Thompson, who was convicted of wrecking and robbing a train at Pasco, Los Angeles county, has been granted a new trial. He was under sentence of death. . The train blockade in the Northwest has been partially broken by the cessa tion of the snow storms and blizzards. Chinese packers employed by th Fay Fruit Company at Riverside were robbed and deported by masked men. The Chinese returned and are being guarded by an armed force to repel further attacks. , . Petaluma is likely to have a cold storage establishment, as preliminary steps have been taken by parties at interest. . The conductor, engineer and fireman of a train were arrested at Red Bluff for in voluntary manslaughter for kill ing a man wlttle running their train at too high a rate of speed. Isaiah Brandon was sentenced to three months in jail at Fresno for try ing to hit his daughter with a hammer.' He died a few minutes after being re leased from jail. The final count of California's Presi dential vote shows that the first Demo- -crat on the ballot beat the tailcnder on the Republican electoral ticket. The board of health con demned certain school buildings as unsanitary and ordered them closed. The school board refuses to recognize the power of the other board to close a school. . Mrs. M. A. Stockton, the gay widow who figured prominently in the church scandal of lr. Brown and the First Congregational Church last winter, has been married to an Oakland business man. Litigation over the estate of Jacob Z. x r i - - i -, - aire, who died some time ago, reveals the fact that he has lived under an as sumed name, his correct name being Dediker. No reason is given for the change of name. The long delayed decision of the liti gation between the railroad commis sioners and the Southern Pacific Com pany has been rendered by Judge McKenna. The decision denies the commission has any power to red nee rates. Thus in effect declaring it to be a useless encumbrance ou the state. The Pacific Ocean House, one of the large hotels at Santa Cruz, has passed into bankruptcy. The debts amount to about 50,000. A Florence Crittenden Home will be established at Fhcenix, A. T. Two boys, aged 14 and 15 years, have Wen arrested in San Diego for burglary. Express orders for $40 and $17 iu cash were secured. His body w as badly man- The coroner's jury over the body of Alvin B. Hancock of San Bernardino renders a verdict of death with suicidal intent induced by melancholia. It is reported that the Southern Pa cific railroad company will bring sev eral suits soon in Kings county to fore close contracts for the purchase of laud. Engineers estimate that it will take twenty-two months to complete the eleven steel bridges necessary -to close , the gap in the coast lino of the South ern Pacific railroad.
