An artist of noble lineage, Count Wolfang Ballestrem, was shot and killed by aii' other artist, Charles Abiger, with whom he had lived for a number of years in close friendship.' There had been a slight quarrel before the shooting, but Abiger protests that the firing was ac cidental. Abiger comes from a distin guished family also. The deposition of Bishop Keane from the rectorship of the Catholic Univer sity at Washington has been regarded as the first sign of a movement that is to shake the entire American Catholic hierarvhv. Destructive forest fires are raging in the north. A report received at Van couver, B. C., from Valdex island says that fires have been raging all around there for nearly two months and that millions of feet of valuable timber have been destroyed. The most shocking and mysterious collision that has ever occurred on the coast division of the Southern Pacific railroad, near Palo Alto, between San Francisco and San Joce, hapH;ned a few days ago. The special freight bound from the south ran into four box cars that for some unaccountable reason were standing on the track. Engineer Henry Haggerty was instantly killed and Brakeman Joseph Bowser and Fireman Jerry Burge were seriously hurt. All the cars of the wrecked train were heavily loaded. It was an extra freight and was being run through on fast time. To the lack of religious teachings in the schools of the nation Kev.
