McGeorge, a popular young druggist of Eureka, was accidentally shot while duck hunting. With two companions he was in a boat. MiHon Bohall, one of the party stepped out of the boat to recover a bird, and in taking his gun from the bottom of the boat the hammer caught on a cord attack to the rowlocks. The gnn was discharged and the load struck McGeorge in the left arm, near the shoulder. The wound is probably fatal. Charles Montgomery surrendered to the sheriff at Eugene City, Or., the i other afternoon, saying he had killed i Hiram Hall a mile from town m order to escape being robbed. Hall's body was found where designated by Mont gomery. Montgomery had apparently been under the influenoe of Hall for sev eral weeks and was induced to mortgage his land to get money for both to use in the Siletz Indian reservation lands. Three hundred dollars had disappeared and Montgomery thought Hall had stolen it and was trying to get 800 more. A short time ago Victor Ottmer of Healdsbnrg, Cal, committed suicide. He was engaged to be married and now his fiancee, Miss Jennie L. Campbell, claims his estate and has asked for let ters of administration. Ottmer's par ents are living and they will fight the girl's claim. The Shakers have made a great hit. The California Protective association. which embraces in its membership the wholesale and retail liquor dealers -of Los Angeles, is vigorously after the local drug stores which are alleged to be selling liquor without paying license into the city treasury. The liquor deal ers want the druggists to pay a license of $20 per month. Stanford university is in a state of suppressed excitement over the dis missal of one student and the probable severe disciplining of three others fur cheating in examinations. Yanhorn admit that it will not be long before be retires from the presidency ot the Canadian Pacific rail road. Dr. J. C Moore, president of the de funct Common wealth National bajfk of Manchester, N. H., has surrendered to his bondsmen. Senator Don Cameron of Pennsyl vania has announced that he will retire from folitios at the expiration of his term of cface next year. W. H. Harvey, the advocate of fret silver, who ia better known ai "Ooha,r has launched his new political party at Chicago. It ia to be known as "The Patriots of America, " and ita especial mission ia to advaaoe the cause of free silver, as well as to eliminate selfishness freas politios. The national officers are: W. H. Harvey, first national patriot; Charles H. MoClure, national recorder; Jaues W. He then sent for the girl and a doctor, and he told her that he would not permit the physician to save him unless she returned to him. The girl promised and the doctor used a stomach pump, and now the lovelorn youth is alive and welL A suit filed in the United States cir cuit court at Tacoma recalls the Paris scandal of five years ago in which Colonel and Mrs. C P. Ferry of Ta coma figured as principals and later were divorced. Mrs. Ferry has com menced an action to have declared void a release made by her to Ferry when the divorce was obtained, by which she accepted $50,000 in full settlement of her interest in their property. She de clares now that the property was worth $900,000 at that time and alleges that the settlement was procured by fraud and misrepresentations made to her by Ferry and J. B. Metcalf, a lawyer who acted ror ner and whom she makes a party to the suit. She charges oolluaien by which she was led to believe that the property was worth only $130,000. The estate lies in Oregon and Washington. She claims oae-half of the property in Washington and one-third ef that in Oregon, being the wife's portion under the laws of each state. City Attorney 'Wickersham created a sensation a year 'ago by bringing a dam age suit for $1,000,000 against the Ta coma Light and Water company and C. B. Wright, a Philadelphia million aire, alleging that ths company de frauded th city of Tacoma to that amount in selling it a light and water plant in 1893 for $1,750,000. Misrepre sentations and fraud preliminary to the sale were alleged. A jury has been se cured and tha casa will now be tried. William J. Peall, founder of the town of Bethlehem, Santa Clara county, and well known in several sections of the state as a real estate dealer, nas filed a petition in insolvency. His liabilities are $26,000, of which $24,000 is a judg ment in favor of the estate of C Frev- schlag and a joint note with Freyschlag of $15,00. Meffit is serving a sen tence in the penitentiary fer forgery, and Edgar, who is an attorney, jumped his bail while awaiting an appeal to the supreme court, he also having been con victed of forgery.
