Pacific Northwest milk production is steady. Milk handlers and farmers have maintained milk output to keep processing facilities full. Production is in balance with processing needs. With a number of educa- tional institutions starting the school year online over the next few weeks, the push for school milk bottling is less than usual. Retail bottling is steady and comparable to what it has been throughout the summer. Dairy contacts in the mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado say milk supplies are more available. As cheese prices have fallen across the nation’s cash markets, some cheese producers have released more milk. Milk handlers are scrambling to find homes for the now available milk. Spot milk prices in Idaho are $4 under Class IV. In some cases, contacts report delivery costs are included in those prices. Condensed skim is accessible to all buyers. Prices are flat. In the West, cream is more available compared to the past week. Ice cream buyers are not taking as much cream as they were a few weeks ago. While retail ice cream sales are strong, food service ice cream demands are not doing well. Cream multiples for all Classes are trending lower at the top of the range. rounds of shots): 300-400 lbs NT; 400-500 lbs 160.00-185.00; 500-600 lbs 148.00-160.00; 600-700 lbs 130.00-141.00; 700-800 lbs NT; 800-900 lbs NT No. 2 Med and Large Frame Steers (1 round of shots): 300-400 lbs 130.00-150.00; 400-500 lbs 120.00-159.00; 500-600 lbs 116.00- 147.00; 600-700 lbs 109.00-129.00; 700-800 lbs 105.00-128.00; 800-900 lbs 95.00-118.00 No. 1 Med and Large Frame Heifers (2 rounds of shots): 300-400 lbs NT; 400-500 lbs NT; 500-600 lbs NT; 600-700 lbs NT; 700-800 lbs NT; 800-900 lbs NT No. 2 Med and Large Frame Heifers (1 round of shots): 300-400 lbs 120.00-142.00; 400-500 lbs 115.00-142.00; 500-600 lbs 108.00-131.00; 600-700 lbs 105.00-125.00; 700-800 lbs 95.00-120.00; 800-900 lbs 85.00-110.00 No. 1 Holstein Steers: 300-400 lbs NT; 400- 500 lbs NT; 500-600 lbs 60.00-75.00; 600-700 lbs 68.00-80.00; 700-800 lbs 70.00-82.25; 800-900 lbs 70.00-80.00 Weigh Beef Cows: High Yielding 70.00- 83.00; Med Yielding 64.00-69.00; Low Yielding 48.00-63.00 Weigh Dairy Cows: High Yielding 65.00- 75.00; Med Yielding 58.00-64.00; Low Yielding 40.00-57.00 Weigh Bulls: High Yielding 83.00-93.50; Med Yielding 75.00-82.00; Low Yielding 60.00-74.00 Holstein Barren Heifers: 65.00-86.00 COTTONWOOD (Shasta Livestock Auction Yard) Aug. 7 Receipts: 372 Comments: Steady prices for turnout cattle. Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S. Aug. 13 In California, milk supplies remain in good balance with demands. Production is stable to a bit up. Although milk is clearing well through the different distribution channels, from time to time spot loads are available to buyers. According to contacts, several plants in the Central Valley are running at full capacities and have limited ability to sell any of their milk. In Arizona, milk yield is steady as cows are able to recharge during the evening when temperatures are a bit cooler. Milk sales are generally stable. Class I intakes are unchanged from a week ago. According to industry players, when schools resume in a few days, students will be receiving milk through the school meal program. This could help boost bottled milk demands. There hasn’t been any big inflow of milk from other states or outflow of milk to other states. Despite the weather being warmer, New Mexico milk production has been consistent with last week’s volumes. In order to ensure good milk cooling, a few processors slowed their production schedules to repair milk tanks. This did not create any major issue with milk distribution schedules. Class I and III sales have declined, but Class II demands have increased. The milk market is balanced in New Livestock Auctions Oregon EUGENE (Eugene Livestock Auction) Aug. 15 Total Receipts: 357 Comments: Cows and bulls $4-6 off. Lambs stronger on higher demand. Remember to vaccinate your calves for the fall feeder sales. It looks like the dairies might dump some cows on the market. This coupled with the start of fall culling of the beef cows has the feel of a cheaper market in the weeks to come. If you have cull cows to sell, the earlier the better. The cows and bulls are packing a lot of fill this time of year. Remember it’s all based on yield percentage. Many of the receipts in the Northern Plains are coming off summer grass with the yearlings in excellent condition reported. Buyers are looking for those cattle to perform very well in the feedlot with compensatory gains on the front end appearing to be very good. A wide range of weather patterns have moved across the U.S. in recent times and this week, an inland hurricane came close in proximity to a D3 drought designation in Iowa. Some of those in the western part of Iowa are recalling the summer of 2012 and how bad it was then. Producer anecdotes of year- to-date rainfall being 2 inches of moisture shorter than 2012 gives this year even more perspective for them. A derecho swept across the Midwest early this week and left a path of destruction in its wake. Grain bins, elevator legs, power poles, power lines and millions of acres of affected corn and soybeans were not able to withstand 100-plus mph winds. Grain traders saw an increase in value on the Board this week even though the latest WASDE report showed an increase in average yield for both corn and soybeans. Negotiated cash fed cattle trade was 4.00 higher in the Southern Plains at 104.00 live, while dressed sales in Nebraska are 2.00 to 7.00 higher for the week at 165.00 to 170.00. This morning’s Choice boxed beef was re- ported at 214.04, 8.57 higher than last Friday’s close. Select cutout was reported at 199.24, 6.49 higher than last Friday’s close. Estimated slaughter under federal inspec- tion this week was reported at a 640K, 7k more than last week, and 13K less than last year. Auction volume this week included 57 percent weighing over 600 lbs and 42 percent heifers.
