Tickets on sale for hospital foundation event
The Observer
LA GRANDE — The Grande
Ronde Hospital Foundation and US
Bank announced in a press release that
the annual “From the Ground Up!”
fundraising event will take place on
Saturday, July 9, starting at 6 p.m. at the
Union County Fairgrounds, La Grande.
The event, which begins at 6 p.m.,
will feature multiple mobile food ven-
dors with many tasty meal options
from the area. “Dueling” DJs KC
Kunkel and Scott Newman will pro-
vide music, and there will be games,
including cornhole and ax throwing.
The event will feature performer
Jonathan Burns, who has appeared on
America’s Got Talent, and Penn and
Teller’s Fool Us. “Jonathan will make
you laugh and cheer for his hilarious
and amazing jokes, tricks, and stunts,”
according to the press release.
Guests will get a first look at a
new project Grande Ronde Hospital
is starting this summer, which “will
launch the future of health care in
Northeastern Oregon,” the release
stated. The Grande Ronde Hospital
Foundation will be taking a big role
in funding this project and will be
announcing more details and donation
opportunities.
For attendees and non-attendees
alike, “From The Ground Up!” will
also feature an online silent auction
and a limited entry Golden Ticket
Raffle for the chance to win a “bucket
list vacation.” Golden Ticket entries
are limited to 300 tickets.

The Grande Ronde Hospital Foun-
dation has been fundraising for patient
care equipment at Grande Ronde Hos-
pital since 1969 and has raised more
than $4.6 million, the release said.

COVE — Cove senior lunches are
served at Founders Hall on the Ascen-
sion School grounds on the first and
third Tuesdays of the month. Coffee
and tea are available at 11:30 a.m., and
lunch is at noon.
The menu for Tuesday, May 17, is
baked chicken, macaroni and cheese,
peas and carrots, salad bar, rolls and
chocolate chip cookies.

JOSEPH — Everyone is invited to
Hurricane Creek Grange, 82930 Air-
port Lane, Joseph, on Saturday, May
14, for an all-you-can-eat breakfast
and a regional spring bazaar. Break-
fast will be served from 7-11 a.m.,
offering pancakes, breakfast meat,
eggs, biscuits and gravy, juice and
coffee for a requested donation of $8.

LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University named
590 students to the dean’s list for the 2022 winter term,
according to a press release from the university.
Qualifying students must achieve and maintain a
grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while
completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded EOU
coursework.
The following students from Union and Wallowa coun-
ties, listed by hometown, earned this distinction.

Joseph Glen Breshears, 83, formerly of Wallowa
County, died June 27, 2020, in Birmingham, Alabama.
A graveside service will be held June 4, 2022, at 1 p.m.
at the Wallowa Cemetery.

PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT
MONDAY, MAY 9
TUESDAY, MAY 10
8:25 a.m. — A caller at Safeway, 2111 Adams Ave., La Grande,
reported a counterfeit and forgery matter. Police responded and
counseled the subject.
8:35 a.m. — A Union County sheriff’s deputy responded to Elgin
residences for a person suffering a mental or emotional crisis. The
person made a safety plan with the Center for Human Develop-
ment Inc., La Grande,
9:55 a.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about a theft
at Boy Scouts of America, 2301 Adams Ave. An officer responded
and warned a person for theft of services.
12:44 p.m. — A caller reported animal abuse on the 500 block
of East Ash Street, Union. An animal enforcement officer made
contact and explained options.
4:15 p.m. — A caller reported an abandoned vehicle in front of
a residence on the 500 block of North Bellwood Street, Union. A
Union County sheriff’s deputy responded and found the vehicle
had been stolen. The deputy contacted the vehicle’s owner.
6:15 p.m. — A resident on the 3100 block of Alder Street, La
Grande, reported the theft of a chainsaw. An officer took a report.
8:55 p.m. — A caller reported animal cruelty on the 500 block of
East Fir Street, Union.
9:48 p.m. — La Grande police responded to a residence on the
600 block of Y Avenue for a disturbance. Officers arrested a 51-year-
old man on a parole and probation detainer.
6:08 a.m. — A caller on the 2600 block of Bearco Loop, La
Grande, asked to speak to police regarding a burglary to a storage
unit. An officer made contact and took a report.
8:03 a.m. — La Grande police issued the first of three case num-
bers for sex crime investigations.
11:29 a.m. — A caller reported possible animal neglect on the
1100 block of First Street, La Grande. An animal enforcement offi-
cer responded.
12:16 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office took a report for
a sex crime in Cove.
12:49 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office received a com-
plaint about a careless driver on the 1000 block of Inkwood Street,
Elgin. A deputy made contact and counseled the driver.
4:09 p.m. — La Grande police received a request for assistance
at Central Elementary School, 701 H Ave. A parent showed up prior
to officer arrival.
5:32 p.m. — A caller on the 1200 block of Benton Avenue,
La Grande, reported dogs chased her and her child. An animal
enforcement officer made contact.
9:44 p.m. — Local law enforcement responded to the area of
Gekeler Lane and railroad tracks on a report of a trespasser. Offi-
cers did not find anyone.

Thomas G. Lawry Jr.
February 11, 1947 – May 1, 2022
Thomas George Lawry Jr., 75,
of La Grande, passed away on
Sunday, May 1, 2022, at Grande
Ronde Hospital. At his request,
there will not be a service.
Thomas was born on Feb. 11,
1947, in Modesto, California, to
Thomas and Noreen (Berg) Lawry.
He resided in La Grande, Oregon;
Hamilton and Arlee, Montana; and
Las Vegas, Nevada. Thomas served our country while in
the United States Navy. In 1991, he married Sally Jean
Nelson and they remained married until her passing in
2011. He married Joe-Ann Joyce Nelson in 2013.
Thomas worked for Simplot and was a Buckaroo
around the West. He loved the western life! He enjoyed
traveling, camping, RVing and listening to country
western music, such as Dwight Yokum and Allen
Jackson. He was generous to a fault, bighearted, and
family was the most important thing to him. He was
also a member of the Masons.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Joe-Ann; children,
Bo Jay Rambo of Salem, Oregon, and Missy Rambo
of North Dakota; stepdaughter, Shana Jean Terry; seven
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Noreen;
brother, Steve Lawry; and his grandparents.
