Life Scout puts in sign at Camp Elkanah for Eagle project
Torry A. Hardenbrook
For his Eagle project, Samuel
Platz organized the building
of a large wooden sign board
to house a map showing all
the buildings and activity
areas of Camp Elkanah, on
Highway 244 west of La
Grande. Platz was responsible
for submitting a proposal
for approval, fundraising,
acquiring supplies, gathering
volunteers, and helping
build and install the sign. The
project took 163 hours total
to complete and included
help from a group of 16
volunteers including Boy
Scouts and leaders, Camp
Elkanah staff, neighbors
and family members. Platz
collected and recycled
donated cans and bottles
from the community to help
fund the project. Shown here,
from left, are Amos Lewis, Joe
Platz, Mason Ritter, Samuel
Platz, Elijah Gliddon and

Samuel L. Wheeler
October 25, 1957 – April 13, 2022
Sam Wheeler, 64, of Elgin,
died on April 13, 2022, at Grande
Ronde Retirement Residence in La
Grande, Oregon. A celebration of
Sam’s life will be held on Saturday,
April 30, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the
Elgin Community Center.
Samuel Lee Wheeler was born
on Oct. 25, 1957, to Joe and Joy
Wheeler. Sam grew up on Cricket
Flat, on the family homestead ranch, outside of Elgin.
He went to school in Elgin and then graduated from
Imbler High School. Following high school, Sam went
to automotive school. When he came back to Elgin,
he met his wife, Angie Meyer. Sam and Angie were
married in 1986 in La Grande, Oregon, and they had
two sons: Ben and Tim. He was very proud of his boys.
Sam and Angie divorced in 2001 but remained friends.
Sam was owner/operator of RV Hauling. He then
drove long haul and log truck. He later bought his own
truck and took a lot of pride in it. He loved being his own
boss, making his own decisions and all the freedom it
came with. Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing and road trips
and was a gun enthusiast. He had a tremendous sense
of humor.
Sam is survived by his sons, Ben Wheeler and Tim
Wheeler; his mother, Joy; sisters, Carrie Gerber and
Elizabeth Wheeler; and several nieces, nephews and
extended family. He was preceded in death by his father.
