Hardenbrook For his Eagle project, Samuel Platz organized the building of a large wooden sign board to house a map showing all the buildings and activity areas of Camp Elkanah, on Highway 244 west of La Grande. Platz was responsible for submitting a proposal for approval, fundraising, acquiring supplies, gathering volunteers, and helping build and install the sign. The project took 163 hours total to complete and included help from a group of 16 volunteers including Boy Scouts and leaders, Camp Elkanah staff, neighbors and family members. Platz collected and recycled donated cans and bottles from the community to help fund the project. Everyone within the Cove School District is welcome to join monthly CCA meetings. • IMBLER — The first meeting of the Imbler School District Budget Committee will be held Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in Room 1 of Imbler High School. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message and to receive public com- ment on the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. A copy of the budget document may be inspected or obtained at the high school office. The meeting is open to the public. Celebrate Side A’s birthday at April 30 community block party LA GRANDE — Side A Brewing is having a birthday, and the entire community is invited to a block party on Saturday, April 30. The brewery, 1219 Washington Ave., is turning 5. The block party will run 3-8 p.m. on Elm Street with a kids activity corner, lawn games, a “Paint a Pint” station with Art Center East, and booths from local organizations, including La Grande Parks and Rec- reation, Kevin Boylan Glass, The Sweet Stick, Gardenia’s Tamales, Blue Mountain Outfitters, Teahouse, Pixie Dust Creations, Pinedrop Designs and Oregon STEM. At 5 p.m., Staci & Co. will take the stage to play live for about two hours. At 7:30 p.m., an “after party” concert by Bag of Hammers starts on the Side A patio. A deputy took a report. 7:42 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 100 block of Second Street on a report of a dead person. An offi- cer took a report. 9:25 a.m. — A resident on the 800 block of B Avenue, La Grande, made a complaint about barking dogs. An animal enforcement officer made con- nect and explain options. 3:16 p.m. — A caller reported a residential burglary on the 63400 block of Ows- ley Canyon Road, La Grande. A Union County sheriff’s dep- uty made contact. The subject only wanted the sheriff’s office to log the information for now. 3:30 p.m. — Local law enforcement responded to Shelter From the Storm, 10901 Island Ave., Island City, on a report of a suspicious person. TUESDAY, APRIL 26 10:19 a.m. — A caller asked La Grande police to check on the welfare of a resident on the 2400 block of Greenwood Street. An officer responded and the subject was fine. 12:03 p.m. — A caller on the 2600 block of Island Avenue, La Grande, asked to talk to an offi- cer about telephonic harass- ment. Wheeler October 25, 1957 – April 13, 2022 Sam Wheeler, 64, of Elgin, died on April 13, 2022, at Grande Ronde Retirement Residence in La Grande, Oregon. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Elgin Community Center. Samuel Lee Wheeler was born on Oct. 25, 1957, to Joe and Joy Wheeler. Sam grew up on Cricket Flat, on the family homestead ranch, outside of Elgin. He went to school in Elgin and then graduated from Imbler High School. Following high school, Sam went to automotive school. When he came back to Elgin, he met his wife, Angie Meyer. Sam and Angie were married in 1986 in La Grande, Oregon, and they had two sons: Ben and Tim. He was very proud of his boys. Sam and Angie divorced in 2001 but remained friends. Sam was owner/operator of RV Hauling. He then drove long haul and log truck. He later bought his own truck and took a lot of pride in it. He loved being his own boss, making his own decisions and all the freedom it came with. Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing and road trips and was a gun enthusiast. He had a tremendous sense of humor. Sam is survived by his sons, Ben Wheeler and Tim Wheeler; his mother, Joy; sisters, Carrie Gerber and Elizabeth Wheeler; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
