Art Center East, based in La Grande, was
founded in 1977 and is a member-based
nonprofi t arts services organization that
brings arts opportunities and education to
the residents of 10 Eastern Oregon counties.

LA GRANDE — A free opening
reception for “Emergence,” an exhibit
showcasing artwork by Eastern
Oregon University junior-year art
majors and minors, will be conducted
from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Art
Center East, 1006 Penn Ave., La
Grande.
The exhibit’s featured artists are
Corrina Stadler, Erin Monagle, Cira
Mesubed, Alexis Lowe, Gretchen Lit-
zlbeck, Jessica Hitzman, Koedi Bir-
mingham and Allyson Bates, according
to an Art Center East press release.
Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday-
Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

“This group of students enjoys a
shared academic experience, but the
variety of their artistic processes and
distinct creative interests allow for a
group exhibition that celebrates indi-
vidual expression. Through concen-
trated research, writing, and studio
exploration, these junior-year students
have each begun to develop a cohesive
and focused body of work,” the press
release said.
“Emergence” will be on display in
ACE’s Main Gallery through April 30.
Regular gallery hours are noon to
5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Art Center East galleries are open
to the public and admission is always
free.
The annual Eastern Oregon Uni-
versity junior exhibition at Art Center
East is made possible through the
university’s long-standing partner-
ship and collaboration with ACE,
which continues to support artists at
every stage of development thereby
enriching Eastern Oregon’s diverse
arts community.

Baker Heritage Museum holds April 1 open house
Event includes sneak peek
at Oregon Trail exhibit

BAKER CITY — Baker Heritage
Museum will have a community open
house on Friday, April 1, from 3-7 p.m.
Visitors can meet the new offi cers
of the Baker Historical Society and
get a sneak peek of the National His-
toric Oregon Trail Interpretive Cen-
ter’s exhibit.
During the open house, the com-
munity can renew a historical society
membership, learn about volunteer
opportunities and see new work at the
museum, 2480 Grove St., just east of
Geiser-Pollman Park, in Baker City.
Light refreshments will be served.
At 4:30 p.m., Historical Society
President Ginger Savage will make
welcoming remarks, but guests are
welcome to come anytime during the
four-hour open house, which coin-
cides with new art shows at Baker City
galleries.
“It is critically important that the
Baker Historical Society gather and
acknowledge the years of service by
so many steadfast volunteers who
have maintained and grown the His-
torical Society mission,” Savage said.
“We also need to gather as we come
out of the pandemic to recruit new
volunteers and new members to sup-
port a signifi cant level of new work
that needs to be done.”
Members of the Baker Museum
Commission will also be on hand to
share information concerning signifi -
cant infrastructure issues with the his-
toric Natatorium and immediate fund-
raising needs, and cultural partners
will be available to discuss the Baker
County Culture and Heritage Passport
program.

EOU unveils senior capstone
art exhibit
LA GRANDE — The Nightingale
Gallery at Eastern Oregon Univer-
sity presents “Sum and Substance,”
the senior capstone exhibit of Sophia
Aimone, Kim Baum and Dalton
Mauzay.
The exhibition opens Friday, April
1, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. in
the gallery, located in Loso Hall. The
exhibit runs through April 29.

Discover After School exhibit
LA GRANDE — Art Center East
will present the Discover After School
Educational Exhibit with a free recep-
tion Friday, April 1, from 6-8 p.m.
at the art center, 1006 Penn Ave., La
Grande. A wild-harvested Doug-
las-fi r tea will be available for visi-
tors to sample. Discover After School
is a free ACE afterschool program for
middle schoolers that was inspired by
the Qapqápnim Wéele/Grande Ronde
Community Science Project.
The Discover After School Edu-
cational Exhibit runs throughout the
month of April and features youth art
projects and photographs from DAS
classes, youth art projects and edu-
cational posters from Grande Ronde
Model Watershed, interactive items
from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
and infographic posters from the
Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla
Indian Reservation.
The Discover After School Pro-
gram is funded by a Gray Family
Foundation geography grant and is
a collaboration with ACE and La
Grande Parks and Recreation. Nak-
nuwithlama Tiichamna (Caretakers
of the Land) is also a supporter of the
DAS Program.
The Spring 2022 Discover After
School session begins April 21. Reg-
istration is now open at artcen-
tereast.org/calendar/discover-af-
ter-school-agemiddle-schoolers or in
person at ACE.
The exhibit runs through April 30.
Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday
from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exhibits can also be

org. Art Center East galleries are open
to the public and admission is free.

Avenue, La Grande. Offi cers
responded and counseled the
youths.
9:20 a.m. — A caller
reported a transient camp at
Second Street and Lake Ave-
nue, La Grande. An offi cer
responded and told the parties
to move along.
12:24 p.m. — La Grande
police received a report of tele-
phonic harassment on the 600
block of 12th Street. An offi -
cer made contact and issued a
warning.
2:08 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to Cook
Memorial Library, 2006 Fourth
St., on a report of intoxicated
individuals. An offi cer told the
group to move along.
3:21 p.m. — La Grande
police received a complaint
about a transient camp on the
2200 block of L Avenue. An
offi cer responded and coun-
seled the parties.
9:33 p.m. — A caller
reported a domestic distur-
bance in the area of Depot
Street and Benton Avenue. An
offi cer responded and deter-
mined this was verbal only and
separated the parties.
11:17 p.m. — The Union
County Sheriff ’s Offi ce received
a complaint about noise on the
900 block of North Gale Street,
Union. A deputy responded
and counseled the parties,
who agreed to turn down the
music.

6:43 a.m. — A caller
reported fi nding goats at
North College Street and
East Bryan Street, Union. An
animal enforcement offi cer
responded and located the
animals’ owner.
9:28 a.m. — A caller
reported a safety hazard on
Cedar Street and C Avenue, La
Grande. An offi cer responded
and removed the hazard.
12:38 p.m. — A caller
reported gunshots on the
1900 block of Penn Avenue, La
Grande. An offi cer responded
but found no one shooting a
gun.
1:28 p.m. — La Grande
police arrested Vonell Lenn
Edwards, 43, for fi rst-degree
theft by receiving.
2:18 p.m. — A caller on the
300 block of 20th Street, La
Grande, reported criminal mis-
treatment. An offi cer made
contact and took a report.
5:47 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to the 2500
block of May Lane on a report
of a disturbance. An offi cer
resolved the situation for now.
7:43 p.m. — A caller on the
1300 block of Z Avenue, La
Grande, reported telephonic
harassment. An offi cer made
contact and provided options.
8:41 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to the 500
block of N Avenue on a report
of a trespasser. Offi cers deter-
mined the person was the
homeowner.

1:44 a.m. — La Grande
police received a report of a
person threatening self-harm.
An offi cer made contact and
explained options.
10:08 a.m. — A caller
reported an assault on the 700
block of Adams Avenue, La
Grande. An offi cer responded
and arrested Derek Alexander
Gonzalez, 19, of La Grande, for
fourth-degree assault.
10:33 a.m. — A caller
reported the theft of a vehi-
cle from Fir Street and Madison
Avenue, La Grande. An offi cer
made contact.
1:32 p.m. — La Grande
police received a report of a
person fi nding a child. Offi cers
responded and counseled the
parent.
1:56 p.m. — A caller
reported fi nding a gun on
the westbound side of Inter-
state 84 near milepost 257. A
Union County sheriff ’s deputy
responded and picked up the
gun.
2:44 p.m. — A caller
reported careless drivers in the
area of Alder Street and Penn
Avenue, La Grande. An offi -
cer responded and counseled
juveniles for riding dirt bikes
with no helmets.
4:34 p.m. — A caller
reported a disturbance at Bub-
bles Laundry, 2001 Adams
Ave., La Grande. An offi cer
responded and took a report.
10:39 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to the 2300
block of Pine Street on a report
of a domestic disturbance and
found the situation did not rise
to the level of a mandatory
arrest.
Kathleen Hatton, 75, of Imbler, died March 25, 2022,
at a local care facility. Arrangements are by Daniels-
Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center,
La Grande.
