The Observer LA GRANDE — A free opening reception for “Emergence,” an exhibit showcasing artwork by Eastern Oregon University junior-year art majors and minors, will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Art Center East, 1006 Penn Ave., La Grande. The exhibit’s featured artists are Corrina Stadler, Erin Monagle, Cira Mesubed, Alexis Lowe, Gretchen Lit- zlbeck, Jessica Hitzman, Koedi Bir- mingham and Allyson Bates, according to an Art Center East press release. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday- Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Baker Heritage Museum holds April 1 open house Event includes sneak peek at Oregon Trail exhibit Baker City Herald BAKER CITY — Baker Heritage Museum will have a community open house on Friday, April 1, from 3-7 p.m. Visitors can meet the new offi cers of the Baker Historical Society and get a sneak peek of the National His- toric Oregon Trail Interpretive Cen- ter’s exhibit. During the open house, the com- munity can renew a historical society membership, learn about volunteer opportunities and see new work at the museum, 2480 Grove St., just east of Geiser-Pollman Park, in Baker City. Light refreshments will be served. At 4:30 p.m., Historical Society President Ginger Savage will make welcoming remarks, but guests are welcome to come anytime during the four-hour open house, which coin- cides with new art shows at Baker City galleries. “It is critically important that the Baker Historical Society gather and acknowledge the years of service by so many steadfast volunteers who have maintained and grown the His- torical Society mission,” Savage said. “We also need to gather as we come out of the pandemic to recruit new volunteers and new members to sup- port a signifi cant level of new work that needs to be done.” Members of the Baker Museum Commission will also be on hand to share information concerning signifi - cant infrastructure issues with the his- toric Natatorium and immediate fund- raising needs, and cultural partners will be available to discuss the Baker County Culture and Heritage Passport program. A wild-harvested Doug- las-fi r tea will be available for visi- tors to sample. Discover After School is a free ACE afterschool program for middle schoolers that was inspired by the Qapqápnim Wéele/Grande Ronde Community Science Project. The Discover After School Edu- cational Exhibit runs throughout the month of April and features youth art projects and photographs from DAS classes, youth art projects and edu- cational posters from Grande Ronde Model Watershed, interactive items from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and infographic posters from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The Discover After School Pro- gram is funded by a Gray Family Foundation geography grant and is a collaboration with ACE and La Grande Parks and Recreation. Nak- nuwithlama Tiichamna (Caretakers of the Land) is also a supporter of the DAS Program. The Spring 2022 Discover After School session begins April 21.
