“Movie: Finding Kendrick
Johnson”
Writer-director Jason Pollock’s 2021
feature-length documentary is based on
a four-year investigation into the fate of
Kendrick Johnson, who was 17 years old
when he was found dead in a rolled-up
gym mat at Lowndes High School in
Valdosta, Ga., in 2013. The film explores
how the victim’s family hired their own
forensic pathologist to examine the body
after the death was ruled accidental.
“Movie: On These Grounds”
This explosive 2021 documentary
revisits a racially charged incident at a
South Carolina high school in 2015. A
white security officer at the school was
summoned to the classroom of a teacher
who reported that a Black student was
creating a disturbance. When the girl
refused to leave her desk, the guard threw
her to the floor and arrested the student.
A classmate’s video of the incident went
viral.
“Movie: This Is the Year”
“How I Met Your Mother” actor David
Henrie made his directorial debut with
this 2020 teen comedy that casts his
brother Lorenzo James Henrie as Josh,
a nerdy high schooler who in a bid to
win over his dream girl embarks with his
friends on a road trip to see his favorite
band at the biggest music festival of the
year. Vanessa Marano also stars.
“Movie: Sex Appeal”
When her long-distance boyfriend
hints at taking their relationship to the
next level, a teen overachiever asks her
longtime friend to be her test subject
so she can master her sexuality in this
teen comedy from Talia Osteen in her
feature film directorial debut. Mika
Abdalla, Jake Short, Mason Versaw, Paris
Jackson and Margaret Cho head the cast.
