An offi cer took information. 2:17 p.m. — A caller reported an injured bird in the 800 block of J Avenue, La Grande. 4:39 p.m. — La Grande police responded to the 1000 block of Jackson Avenue on a report of a juvenile disturbance. An offi - cer determined there was no crime and contacted the Center for Human Development, La Grande, 5:45 p.m. — A Union County sheriff ’s deputy and local medics responded to the area of milepost 15 on Highway 203, Union, on a report of a motorcycle colliding with a deer. 5:52 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff ’s Offi ce received a report of vandalism at Buff alo Peak Golf Course, 1224 E. Fulton St., Union, and a request for an extra patrol at the course. 11:17 p.m. — La Grande police responded to a report of a per- son suff ering a mental or emotional crisis. An ambulance took the person to Grande Ronde Hospital, La Grande. SATURDAY, SEPT. 18 1 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 70 block of Rapid Run Loop on a report of a domestic disturbance. Police arrested THE OBSERVER — A3 DEATH NOTICE Eric Donald Sommerville, 25, for a no contact order violation, men- acing, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon and interfering with making a report. 7:56 a.m. — A caller reported injured cattle on railroad tracks near Union. 5:10 p.m. — A caller reported an assault of an employee at Walmart, 11619 Island Ave., Island City. Union County sheriff ’s dep- uties responded. The victim did not want to pursue a case, and deputies trespassed one and counseled a person for disorderly conduct. 7:48 p.m. — A caller reported possible illegal fi reworks in the area of the 800 block of F Avenue, La Grande. An offi cer checked the area but found nothing to report. 8:41 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff ’s Offi ce responded to Walmart on a report of vehicles cutting cookies in the parking lot. Deputies counseled the drivers involved. 9:57 p.m. — A resident in La Grande threatened self-harm. An offi cer responded, and the resident went to Grande Ronde Hospital. 10:54 p.m. — La Grande police stopped a vehicle at Fourth Street and Penn Avenue and arrested Doug Troy Runyon, 39, for driving under the infl uence of intoxicants. Lane’s kindness, his gentleness, and his willingness to help others were his qualities most mentioned by those in attendance. In addition, all agreed that their lives were enriched by having known Lane. Lane is survived by his son, Rex Harden (Cindy); grandson Carter Harden; and former spouse Georgia Harden of La Grande, OR; son Brian Harden (Anissa) of Ferndale, WA; spouse Sherrie Harden of New Town, ND; and six siblings. Lane was preceded in death by his parents Leonard & Mary Harden and by his grandson Ethan Harden. Janet Elizabeth (Vanaudenhaugen) Sims January 12, 1934 - August 27, 2021 Janet Elizabeth (Vanaudenhaugen) Sims was born January 12, 1934, in Hillsboro, Oregon to Anna May and Cornelius Vanaudenhaugen. She died Au- gust 27, 2021, in Enterprise, Oregon, after a decade long battle with thyroid cancer. She spent her childhood growing up on a farm with first her grandpar- ents, then later her mother and siblings. She attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) grad- uating in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. She met and married John Sims while attend- ing college. They lived in Corvallis until graduation when their first daughter, Ann Marie, was born 1957. They later moved to Portland, where their second daughter, Cathy Lee, was born in 1960. In 1965, the family moved to Bellevue, Washington. John and Janet later divorced. A believer in lifelong learning she attended the University of Washington and earned a master’s degree in sociology. She later attended Seattle Pacific University, in Seattle, and earned a master’s degree in Christian Education. She later lived in Ocean Park, WA and Eugene, Oregon. Janet returned to Hillsboro to live once again on the family farm. She lived there until moving to Enter- prise in 2011 to be nearer her daughter, Ann. During her daughters’ growing up years, she was a campfire girls’ lead- er and worked for a time for Campfire Girls, USA. She was a member of the master’s swim team, a competitive swim team for adults. She enjoyed family camping, backpacking and canoe trips. While living in Hillsboro she worked for Open Door assisting clients find stable housing and connecting them with community resources. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, traveling and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed cooking and keeping abreast of current events, and volunteering. She also enjoyed the arts with season tickets to the Portland Symphony and Seattle Ballet. One of her most significant accomplishments was making wedding dresses for her daughter and niece. She was member of the Lostine Methodist Church and took her faith seri- ously. She also donated to numerous charities including the Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, Komen for the Cure (a breast cancer research foundation), the ASPCA, the Audubon Society, Defenders of Wildlife and OPB. She dearly loved cats and rescued many on the farm from the coyotes or the highway. Over time she gave more than a dozen loving homes. However, her favorite of all the pets she had over the years, was the family dog, Freckles, her beloved English Springer Spaniel. She is survived by her daughter Ann (partner Sally Belsinger) Bloom, Enterprise, Oregon, daughter Cathy (Frank) Luna, Mansfield, Texas, grandson Austin (Ashley) Lobben, great- grandson (Caden), great-granddaughter (Pay- ton), Mansfield, Texas, and nephew Bob (Vickie) Brewer, of Oakridge, Oregon and Cousin Terri Carter and her daughter, Selena (Ben Larson) Carter, of Gas- ton, Oregon, along with many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna O. Hart, stepfather, Mar- ion Hart, former husband, John P . Sims, in-laws, Rose and Paul Sims, sister- in-law and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Bob Brewer, nieces Karen Marie and Carolyn Stuber and nephew, Rodney Brewer.
