OF ‘CHICAGO P.D.’ ON NBC
Eight seasons in, your portrayal of Detective
Sergeant Hank Voight is so established
on “Chicago P.D.,” do you embrace any
changes the producers and writers try to
make to him?
My favorite quote is from Pablo Picasso, and he
said, “I paint the picture to find out what it looks
like.” I aspire to work like that and live like that
– it takes a lot of courage, and I don’t always
succeed – but Hank is better at that than I am.
I think a lot of his power is that he’s able to
simply exist in the present time. He doesn’t worry
about tomorrow or yesterday. He’s very “here,”
and I think that’s part of why people find him
intimidating, because he’s so present. He is just
ready for anything, more than most people are
willing to experience.
Is it tough to “play tough” constantly, as
you do with Voight?
It’s interesting that he has this savage quality. He’s
kind of primal, so you can get an idea of what’s
going to happen. I think what’s been interesting about this season is that for the first time, he’s been
forced to reflect and look at himself, rather than just being himself and looking outward.
How do you think it’s been for Voight lately to mediate conflicts among his detectives,
while also being a boots-on-the-ground team member alongside them?
It’s hard. He’s doing the best he can, and sometimes he does better than at other times – but they’re
a unit. It’s eight hearts with one beat in a way, and they depend on each other. There are times
when Halstead leads or Upton leads or Voight leads, and that’s how we work as actors as well as
how the characters work.
