Northeast Oregon TV Weekly May 16 - 22, 2021 l 3 BY JAY BOBBIN Jason Beghe OF ‘CHICAGO P.D.’ ON NBC Eight seasons in, your portrayal of Detective Sergeant Hank Voight is so established on “Chicago P.D.,” do you embrace any changes the producers and writers try to make to him? My favorite quote is from Pablo Picasso, and he said, “I paint the picture to find out what it looks like.” I aspire to work like that and live like that – it takes a lot of courage, and I don’t always succeed – but Hank is better at that than I am. I think a lot of his power is that he’s able to simply exist in the present time. He doesn’t worry about tomorrow or yesterday. He’s very “here,” and I think that’s part of why people find him intimidating, because he’s so present. He is just ready for anything, more than most people are willing to experience. Is it tough to “play tough” constantly, as you do with Voight? It’s interesting that he has this savage quality. He’s kind of primal, so you can get an idea of what’s going to happen. I think what’s been interesting about this season is that for the first time, he’s been forced to reflect and look at himself, rather than just being himself and looking outward. How do you think it’s been for Voight lately to mediate conflicts among his detectives, while also being a boots-on-the-ground team member alongside them? It’s hard. He’s doing the best he can, and sometimes he does better than at other times – but they’re a unit. It’s eight hearts with one beat in a way, and they depend on each other. There are times when Halstead leads or Upton leads or Voight leads, and that’s how we work as actors as well as how the characters work. Remembering ‘Ally’ Questions: 1) What cast member of “Law & Order” had a recurring role in 1998 as Ally’s (Calista Flockhart) boyfriend Dr. Greg Butters? 2) “Ally” creator David E. Kelley originally considered hiring Bridget Fonda to play which character? 3) What was John Cage’s (Peter MacNicol) nickname and how did he come by it? 4) What city formed the backdrop of the 1997-2002 Fox dramedy “Ally McBeal”? 5) Which character in the law office would be most likely to accuse a colleague of being “snappish”? 6) To help him stop stuttering (without humming), John Cage’s therapist suggested that he say the name of what New York city to regain his focus? 1) Jesse L. Martin 2) Ally McBeal 3) While it was never fully explained on the show, Kelley says Cage was called “The Biscuit” because, as a child, Cage was like the Pillsbury Doughboy, always poked and prodded by his friends. 4) Boston 5) Elaine Vassal (Jane Krakowski) 6) Poughkeepsie Answers: Calista Flockhart BY JOHN CROOK Call 541-523-3673 541-963-3161 For more information
