Morrison Meetings Union • LA GRANDE — The city of La Grande Community Landscape and Forestry Commission meets Tuesday, and the city arts com- mission convenes Wednesday. Both meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Office, inside Pioneer Park next to the tennis courts. Each organization needs volunteer commissioners. Railroad employee groups meet monthly LA GRANDE — The Union Pacific Employees Club No. 17 gets together at 6 p.m. at Denny’s in La Grande. The next gathering is planned for Feb. 11. The local National Associa- tion of Retired Veterans Railway Employees meets at 9 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, also at Denny’s in La Grande. The group meets this month on Feb. 12. Teens: Bring ideas and stories to writing circle LA GRANDE — Cook Memo- rial Library will host Teen Writing Circle at 4 p.m. Thursday. This free gathering for those in middle school and high school is a place to exchange ideas, brainstorm and get feedback from peers. Bring your stories and writing ideas to share. The activity will be in the library’s Community Room and registration is not needed. THE OBSERVER — 3A LOCAL 1932-2020 Stanley “Stan” Maurice Morrison, 87, of Union, died Feb. 2 in Boise, Idaho, from complications of diabetes. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 at Love- land Funeral Chapel. Known as Stan, he was born Aug. 4, 1932, at Hot Lake, to Nele Ivan and Viola Mary (Crandall) Morrison. Stan was raised in Union, where he attended elementary and high school. He was an athlete in high school, playing football and basketball. After graduation, Stan entered the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. After his honorable dis- charge from the Army in 1953, Stan met and married Rosalie A. Scott in Elgin. He went to electronics school in Portland to learn how to repair televi- sion sets. After graduation, he and Rosalie moved back to La Grande and opened a TV repair shop called Stan’s TV. Their only child, a daughter, was born in 1957. Stan eventually sold the TV business and bought a backhoe and dump truck, and he and Rosalie started S & R Morrison Excavating. Stan and Keith Ramsay started and later sold M & R Insulation. Stan continued his business in La Grande until about 1974, at which time he and Rosalie divorced, and he moved his business to the Bend area, where he worked until his retirement. Stan loved rodeo. He was a calf roper and steer wrestler, and later in life he enjoyed team roping and team pen- ning and won several belt buckles. Stan was a member of the La Grande Maver- ick Riding Club and was instrumental in starting the Blue Mt. Rodeo. He served as arena director for a number of years for the rodeo. Stan also loved to hunt, fi sh and play golf. He spent winters in Welton, Arizona, where he enjoyed the warm weather and golfi ng. Several years ago, Stan met Luane Conway, and they lived to- gether in Weiser, Idaho. They loved to travel and spend the winters in Arizona. Survivors include Luane Conway of Weiser, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law, Deb and Sam Baker of Union; two granddaughters and three great-grandsons; and two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nele and Viola, and sister, Laura Maxine Shirey. (Rylander) Bruce Union 1934-2020 Dorothy Elaine Bruce, 86, of Union, died Jan. 30 at her residence. As she requested, there will not be a service. Dorothy was born Jan. 17, 1934, in Shasta, California, to Sven and Dorothy (Morgan) Rylander. She was raised in Northern California. She married Henry Bruce Sept. 18, 1953, in Reno, Nevada. Dorothy and Henry moved to Union in 1987 from Mil- waukie. Dorothy loved to raise fl ower and vegetable gardens. She was also a fabulous cook. Her real passion was quilting. She made many quilts for family and friends. Dorothy and Henry often traveled to Alaska, where they enjoyed fi shing with her son and family. Dorothy also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving relatives in- clude her son and daughter- in-law, Curt and Liz Bruce of Ketchikan, Alaska; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. (Lanman) Asla Formerly of La Grande 1952-2020 Christine Larie Asla, 67, of King City and formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 13 at her home. A service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Christine was born Feb. 27, 1952, in La Grande, to Billy and Marjorie (Isaacson) Lanman. She graduated from Churchill High School in Eugene with the class of 1970. On Dec. 18, 1971, Christine married Gregory Alan Haller in Eugene. The marriage ended on Dec. 31, 1973. Christine moved back to La Grande and went to work for the Oregon State Police as support personnel in June 1973. On June 4, 1977, she married Ralph Lee Asla in La Grande. Christine lived in various places until settling in King City. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, and she liked to crochet. She loved her cat, Peaches. Surviving relatives in- clude her siblings and their spouses, Mark and Peggy Lanman of La Grande, Mi- chael and Vicki Lanman of La Grande, Robert Allen and Judy Lanman of Pendleton and Cynthia and Bob Weber of La Grande; and numerous nieces and nephews.
