Wednesday, January 15, 2020 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon 3 Dams are topic of Winter Fishtrap ■ ■ The gathering is set for Jan. 17-19 in Joseph and features keynote address and discussions JOSEPH — Join concerned citizens of the West Jan. 17-19 for Winter Fishtrap. The theme of this year’s conference is dams. According to a press release, throughout the 20th century, the idea of building dams on rivers of the West was a sign of hope, progress and American ingenuity. To many, they represent something very different today. Winter Fish- trap, a three-day conference in Jo- seph, will explore why these dams were built, how they transformed the West and at what cost. From the big federally funded projects to right here at home at Wallowa Lake, the conference aims to spark a new understanding on a subject that influences all our lives. Winter Fishtrap opens with a keynote address on Friday night. “Living in a Dammed World” will be presented by historian Bill Lang. Saturday features a full day of discussions and conversations about how dams have shaped the history of the West and our future with them. Sunday’s closing address is “Tamanwit – Natural Law / Kya’ak ha’ast – Air / Cu’uc – Water / Tiica’m – Land / Nati’tayt – People” with Charles F. Sams III, commu- nications director of the Confeder- ated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Winter Fishtrap is held at the Josephy Center, 403 N. Main St., Joseph.
