LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon Uni- versity men’s basketball team saw a 15-point halftime lead disappear Friday, then were outscored by 11 in overtime in a 107-96 road loss to rival Southern Oregon University. EOU led by as much as 16 points in the fi rst half and went up 50-35 at the break on late 3-pointers by Max McCullough and Josh Brown. Southern chipped away throughout the second half, though, and eventually pulled even with 13 seconds to play, 89-89, on a Teron Bradford 3-pointer. The Raiders followed with the fi rst eight points in overtime to take a 97-89 lead, and EOU got no closer than six the rest of the way. McCullough led fi ve players in double fi gures with 20 points and had seven assists for the Mountaineers. Jarek Schetzle added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jamal Heckard followed with 17 points, Brown scored 13, and Brandon Porter had 11. EOU cooled off after shooting 55% in the fi rst half, shooting only 37% in the second half and overtime and going 2-for-10 from the MOUNTIES FALL SHORT TO NO. 2 OWLS Eastern Oregon shot lights out in the fi rst half Saturday but went into the half with just a one-point lead, and No. 2 Oregon Tech heated up after the break to earn a 107-94 win over the Mountaineers. Eastern built as much as a 13-point fi rst- half lead and shot 59% in those 20 minutes. OIT, though, fi nished the fi rst half on an 18-6 run to get within 49-48, then took the lead on the fi rst possession of the second half and never gave it back. The Hustlin’ Owls, who shot 53% in the second half, used a 15-5 run midway through the second half to take their biggest lead at 86-70, and EOU got no closer than eight the rest of the way. Jarek Schetzle scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Mountain- eers, who cooled off to 40% in the second half. Jamal Heckard added 21 points, six assists and four steals. Josh Brown (17 points) and Zane Wright (10) also reached double fi gures. Eastern (7-6 overall, 1-3 CCC) has an exhibition at Utah State University next weekend before hosting Northwest Christian University Jan. 3 to continue CCC play. Mountie women earn split Observer staff LA GRANDE — Rachel Fielder scored a game-high 22 points Friday, and the No. 18 Eastern Oregon Universi- ty women’s basketball team used a 26-8 second quarter to pull away from Southern Oregon University for an 82- 59 road win. Megan Still added 15 points and Beverly Slater had 11 for EOU, which used the big second-quarter run to build a 54-29 halftime lead. Eastern led by as much as 26 in the second half. The Mountaineers hit nine fi rst-half 3-pointers and fi ve in the second to take the big lead. A Fielder 3-point play and 3s by Kylie Smith, Me- gan Still, Jane Nelson and Brandy Smith were all part of a half-ending 17-1 run. The Mountaineers fi nished with a season-best 10 3s on the night. EOU dominated on the boards (50-32), shared the ball well (21 assists) and had 12 steals. Slater and Kylie Smith had seven rebounds each. Madison Crews, Taylor Stricklin and Emma Logan had four assists apiece, and Still grabbed four steals. OWLS GET PAST EOU IN FOURTH QUARTER Eastern Oregon saw its three-game winning streak to start Cascade Collegiate Conference play end Satur- day with a 63-60 road loss to Oregon Tech, the third time in the last four years the Hustlin’ Owls have taken down EOU in Klamath Falls. Eastern led almost the entire night and was up by as much as 12 in the fi rst half and 10 in the second half. But OIT chipped away and pulled ahead for good, 59-57, on a Melissa Lee jumper with 3:41 to play. Lee added two free throws later to make it a four-point game. Rachel Fielder hit a 3-point- er to bring EOU within 61-60 with 1:53 remaining, but EOU missed four shots in the fi nal 61 seconds that would have either given EOU the lead or tied the score. Beverly Slater had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers. Megan Still added 10 points, and both Fielder and Taylor Stricklin had nine.
