The selection committee’s third weekly rankings had little move- ment in the top 10, with Alabama CROSS Continued from Page 7A Jo Gebhardt — have run well as a pack, which has played into the team’s success. “They race well, but they also run more confi dently in that pack,” he said. Herbes leads what has been a resurgent season for the EOU women. She is coming off one of the best individual performances by a Mountaineer in program history. Her time of 17:47.1, which was good for second at the CCC meet, was second- best all-time in the program. “It’s really exciting having the whole team go,” the soph- omore said. “It’s been quite a few years since our women’s team has gone as a whole. I’m proud of the team effort.” Herbes was the lone Mountaineer at nationals a year ago and placed 165. She said the only item she has re- ally discussed with the team on what to expect from na- tionals is the higher amount of runners on the course. “It’s a bigger fi eld race wise. There are a lot more people,” she said. “As long as they focus on racing, they won’t have any problem.” Welch is hopeful for a top-10 fi nish and believes the women could fi nish anywhere between eighth and 18th. “(It) sounds like an awful wide spread, but it’s not in that race. I think we’re fairly accurately ranked (at 11th).” Welch thinks the men’s team, which is entering nationals ranked 25th, is actually a bit underseeded and could jump a few spots at Friday’s race. “They were 19th last year. They’d like to do that (again),” he said. “Realisti- cally (the range for them) would be 16 to 25.” Welch said there was some uncertainty on what the team was capable of early in the season, given the youth of the team and the inexperi- fi fth followed by Oregon, Utah, Penn State, Oklahoma and Minnesota. The committee could face an interesting decision with Alabama in the coming weeks. The Crimson Tide lost quarterback Tua Tago- vailoa for the season to a hip injury Saturday. Alabama faces Western Carolina this weekend, so playing ence among several of the upperclassmen. “Once we knew who would be racing and knew every- body’s standings, our goal has been to fi nish just inside the top 20,” Welch said. “It’s a young group, and (their youth) has more of an effect on the men’s side because they run the 8K. The men are performing well.” The men have been paced all season by Alex Navarro, who placed third at the CCC meet and earlier this season broke the all-time program re- cord, a mark that Don Stearns held for nearly four decades. The senior, who redshirted last year, said that while the team is young, it’s also ambitious. “I’m excited to see where that puts us,” he said. “Were not pressured to do anything out of this world. At times I like going into things with- out pressure.” Navarro said it’s a dif- ferent feel, in that regard, from the last time nationals were in Vancouver, in 2017. That season, EOU went in ranked in the top 10 and had national title aspirations but fi nished seventh. backup Mac Jones shouldn’t make much difference. On Thanksgiv- ing weekend, the Tide will face Auburn with its No. 2 quarterback, which should give the committee a better read on what kind of a team Alabama is now. “We do not look forward,” said committee chairman Rob Mul- “It didn’t pan out that way (in 2017), but right now (going) in ranked 25th, mixing it up upsetting some teams is what it’s all about,” Navarro said. The rest of the runners for the Mountaineers are Travis Running, Hunter Nichols, Braxton Wilson, Weyekin Wild Bill, Hunter Schiess and Robie Swanson. “We will fi nish better than what we’re ranked. Eastern has that expectation, for the most part. I could see this team being in the (top) 15, for sure.” The senior added the key for the team — and for him- self as he strives to get into the top 10 individually — lies in the mental approach. “They have to be in the right mindset. You never know when you’re going to pop off (and have a great day),” he said. “When I broke the record I didn’t know I was going to. As a collective, they’re going to have to trust each other and their fi tness a lot more than they have in the past.” The men’s race takes place at 10:30 a.m. with the women following at 11:30 a.m. FOOTBALL CONTEST WINNERS! Week 11 1 st - RANDY CARTER LA GRANDE (1 miss closest tiebreaker) 2 - LYLE JENSEN LA GRANDE (1 miss) ND 3 RD - DAVID DEAN LA GRANDE (2 misses, closest tiebreaker) Congratulations! From The Observer. lens, who also is Oregon’s athletic director. “Our charge is to rank the teams based on their body of work through week 12, and that’s what we did. Obviously, we’ll watch the games moving forward and evalu- ate them after that.” Minnesota and Baylor, both of which lost for the fi rst time last weekend, dropped in the rankings. Minnesota went from eighth to 10th after losing at Iowa. Baylor slipped from 13th to 14th after blowing a 25-point lead to Oklahoma. Ohio State and Penn State play this weekend in a game that could essentially eliminate the Nittany Lions from the playoff race. TREASURE VALLEY STEEL, INC.
