TODAY’S HIGHLIGHT On Nov. 11, 1972, the U.S. Army turned over its base at Long Binh to the South Viet- namese, symbolizing the end of direct U.S. military involve- ment in the Vietnam War. ON THIS DATE In 1620, 41 Pilgrims aboard the Mayfl ower, anchored off Massachusetts, signed a compact calling for a “body politick.” In 1918, fi ghting in World War I ended as the Allies and Germany signed an armistice in the Forest of Compiegne. In 1966, Gemini 12 blasted off on a four-day mission with astronauts James A. Lovell and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. aboard; it was the 10th and fi nal fl ight of NASA’s Gemini program. In 1990, Stormie Jones, the world’s fi rst heart-liver transplant recipient, died at a Pittsburgh hospital at age 13. In 1992, the Church of England voted to ordain women as priests. LOTTERY Megabucks: $5.9 million 6-7-11-23-37-45 O BITUARIES Alta “Rose” (Christensen) Moore Union 1917-2019 Alta Rose Moore, 102, of Union, died Nov. 5 at Pioneer Place in Vale. A memorial will be held in the spring, her favorite season. Known as Rose, and to many as Rosie, she was born July 2, 1917, in Haines, to Thomas H. and Myrtle E. (Maxwell) Chris- tensen. Rose attended school at Muddy Creek until her sec- ond year of high school, when her family bought a home in Haines. She graduated from high school in Haines in 1935. After high school, Rose moved to Modesto, California, and spent 13 years there. She returned to Haines in 1949. She worked as a waitress and desk clerk at the Geiser Grand Hotel in Baker City and as a clerk at the Haines Post Offi ce. In her younger years, Rose played the pump organ and piano at the Haines Baptist Church. In Modesto, she played the piano at the Grace Baptist Church and was an accompanist for the soloists at the church and on the radio. In 1953, Rose married Ernest S. “Pat” Moore. They moved to the Snake River in 1957 and she worked as a clerk at the Homestead Post Offi ce and helped at the grocery store. While living in Homestead, Rose and Pat’s son, Ernest T. “Tom” Moore, was born. After leaving the post offi ce she began cooking at the Hell’s Canyon Inn and later leased the cafe at the Halfway Hotel. In 1966, Rose and Pat divorced, and she moved with Tom to North Powder. Rose leased the cafe at the North Powder Motel, which she operated until August 1967 when she and Tom moved to Union. Rose cooked at The Hut Cafe until she retired and continued to live in Union until her death. Surviving relatives include her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Donna of Clyde, Alberta, Canada; stepdaugh- ter, Carol Ashby of John Day; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great- nephews.
