MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2019 THE OBSERVER — 3A LOCAL L ocaL B riefing o Bituaries From staff reports Howard ‘Boyd’ Hadden La Grande 1930-2019 Howard “Boyd” Hadden, 89, of La Grande, died Oct. 9. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at Grandview Cemetery. Known as Boyd, he was born May 7, 1930, in North Powder, to Jay Porter and Lillian (Dahl- strom) Hadden. He attended school in North Powder until the family moved to La Grande. Boyd graduated from La Grande High School in 1948 and then worked for Mount Emily Lumber. On Feb. 16, 1951, Boyd married Kay Dawn Edval- son at the Edvalson Ranch. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951. He served in Anchor- age, Alaska, as a chemical weapons specialist and he, his wife and son, Greg, lived in Spenard, Alaska. When he was honorably discharged the family moved back to La Grande and he worked again at Mount Emily Lumber. His daughter, Pam, was born in 1953. He then worked as an insurance agent. In 1959, the family moved to Pendleton. Boyd drove back and forth to Central Oregon Community College in Bend and earned an asso- ciate’s degree in forestry. He then became the assistant water master for Umatilla County. Boyd coached Little League and Babe Ruth teams in Pendleton. He and Kay chaperoned the ski bus from Pendleton to the Anthony Lakes ski area for several years. Boyd and his family moved back to La Grande in 1969 when he became the state water master for Union County. They built a new home and barn on five acres on Cove Avenue. On April 9, 1993, Boyd retired from the state after 23 years at the age of 63. He and Kay moved into town in 2001, and their daughter and son-in-law purchased the house, where they still reside. Boyd was a member of the Elks Lodge, a 35-year member of the American Legion and a member of the Eagles. Boyd loved all of his fam- ily and had many wonderful friends. He and Kay enjoyed traveling all over the United States and also visited Aus- tralia, New Zealand, Africa, Fiji, Canada and Mexico. Surviving relatives in- clude his wife, Kay; children and their spouses, Greg and Renee Hadden and Pam and Bill Burns; three grandchil- dren; and six great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Millie Chenault and Dick Hadden. Leon Paroz Imbler Leon Paroz, 92, of Imbler, died Oct. 10 at a care facility in Baker City. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Summerville Cemetery Chapel. Ar- rangements are under the direction of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Maxine J. (Downing) Brown Cove 1920-2019 Maxine June Brown, 99, of Cove, died Oct. 9 at her resi- dence. At her request, there will not be a service. Maxine was born June, 10, 1920, in Lacomb, to Orville and Pearl (Hassler) Downing. She also resided in Salem and Cove. Maxine graduated from Oregon Col- lege of Education in Mon- mouth. On Aug 2, 1946, she married Robert A. Brown. Maxine worked as a teacher. She enjoyed needle- point, gardening and sports, especially basketball, base- ball and swimming. Maxine was a member of the Home Extension Service for 40 years and belonged to Ruth Circle at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem. The last four years, she was a mem- ber of Grace Community Lutheran Church in Island City and was known as Grandma to the congrega- tion. Surviving relatives include her sons, Robert Brown and his wife, Donna, of Cove, and Gary Brown of Salem. Arrested: A Union County juvenile was arrested on a charge of second-degree theft. Accident: Nobody was injured in a traffic accident on Hunter Road and Starr Lane on Saturday. The accident was reported at 7:44 a.m. Arrested: Robert Edward Mitchell IV, 24, unknown address, was arrested on a Multnomah County warrant charging failure to appear in court. The warrant was con- nected to an original charge of fraud. Accident: Nobody was injured in a traffic accident at Brooks Road and Courtney Lane in the Imbler area Satur- day. The accident was reported 4:55 p.m. LA GRANDE POLICE DEPARTMENT Arrested: Lenora Valentine, 57, unknown address, was ar- rested on a charge of second- degree disorderly conduct. Arrested: John Lee Schiller, 61, unknown address, was arrested on two Union County warrants. One warrant charged driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driv- ing. A second warrant charged driving while suspended or revoked. Arrested: Derek Benjamin Oretega, 27, unknown address, was arrested on a Union County warrant charging failure to ap- pear in court. The warrant was connected to an original charge of first-degree trespassing. Arrested: Steven Dean Johnson, 29, unknown ad- dress, was arrested while lodged in the Union County Jail on a charge of order to show cause. The order to show cause was connected to origi- nal charges of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence); and third-degree escape. Arrested: Fadel Nemr Nahle, 53, La Grande, was arrested while lodged in the Union County Jail on an order to show cause. The order to show cause was connected to an original charge of possession of methamphetamine. Accident: Nobody was injured in a traffic accident Friday at Fir Street and Jeffer- son Avenue. The accident was reported at 5:09 p.m. Arrested: Victor Edward Marlitt, 31, unknown address, was arrested on a Oregon State Parole Board warrant charging a parole violation. The alleged parole violation was connected to an original charge of burglary. Arrested: Briann Dorise Wells, 29, La Grande, was arrested on charges of fourth-degree as- sault and resisting arrest. LA GRANDE FIRE DEPARTMENT Firefighters responded to five calls for medical assis- tance on Sunday, eight on Saturday and nine on Friday. Class of 1954 meets for lunch LA GRANDE — The La Grande High School class of 1954 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Flying J Restaurant. Wednesday is Union County Fair Payday LA GRANDE — Fair pre- miums and market money for 4-H and FFA Union County Fair participants will be available for pickup between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 16 in Room 9 at the Ag Services Building, 10507 N. McAlister Road, Island City. All 4-H and FFA members (except 4-H clover buds) who participated in the fair are eligible for premium money. Fair premiums will only be available during this time. VA clinics offer flu shots LA GRANDE — Flu shots are now available free of charge for veterans at the Walla Walla VA Medi- cal Center and its clinics, including the La Grande clinic, 202 12th St. Accord- ing to the VA, one of the best ways to prevent getting and spreading seasonal flu is to get vaccinated yearly. Walk- in clinics are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon- day through Friday. In ad- dition, the Walla Walla VA is offering a drive-through clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the WWVA’s Building 74 Circle. No ap- pointment is necessary for any of the clinics. Doors open at 5 p.m. The local community has come together this year as they have done every year for more than 40 years to sup- port the mission of Ducks Unlimited here in Union County by donating items for a live and silent auction and raffles. SNAP makes cost-of- living adjustments in October SALEM — In October, Supplemental Nutrition As- sistance Program recipients may see an increase in their monthly food benefits. Monthly benefit amounts are based on federal guide- lines. The annual changes are made to reflect changes in the cost of living and other allowances. Rules regarding monthly benefit amounts changed Oct. 1, which was the beginning of the federal fiscal year. SNAP recipients will not be sent a letter if their benefits increase or stay the same. If benefits decrease, a notice of reduc- tion will be mailed. Calling all MedQuest alumni LA GRANDE — Med- Quest alum Alix Cooper, a medical student at Or- egon Health and Sciences University, is conducting a research project to see what career paths MedQuest campers have taken. CRB seeks volunteers to assist Oregon’s foster care system SALEM — The Citizen Review Board is looking for citizens in Union and/ or Wallowa counties who care about the health and well-being of children and are willing to commit one day every other month to review cases of children in foster care. The law requires that the case of each child in foster care is reviewed by a judge or a panel of local citizens (Citizen Review Board) every six months to ensure the child is receiving adequate care. The CRB makes a series of legal findings and recom- mendations to DHS, the court and other legal parties. This oversight of the child welfare system is vital, and the CRB provides a voice in the care and permanency decisions that are made for these vulnerable children.
