Wednesday, October 2, 2019 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon 3 Shows feature several children’s book authors ■ First Friday art shows open Oct. 4 at galleries in Baker City CROSSROADS 2020 AUBURN AVE. Crossroads Carnegie Art Center will feature “The Alchemy of Glee” featuring Merrijo Wheaton and Amber Day. The show opens Friday with a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with guitar music by Nancy Ames and light refreshments. The student gallery features work by Keating students. A storytime will begin down- stairs at 6 p.m. inspired by art in the gallery from “The Bug’s Journey” illustrated and written by Merrijo and George Wheaton. Crossroads will have a drawing at 7:30 p.m. for a chance to win $25 worth of Taste of Baker tokens. Taste of Baker takes place Oct. 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Baker City. Open Studio Tours maps are available at Crossroads, which will be hosting several of these artists this weekend. Marrijo Wheaton began her “scissor art” journey as a young girl exploring the art world with paper, glue, scissors and paint. Wheaton’s experience of living in the Arizona desert is evident in her vibrant scissor drawings,. Many of the scenes depicted in her art refl ect the Southwest desert and the Art from “The Bug’s Journey” is featured at Crossroads. people who live there. Catherine Lazar Odell, an artist and downhill skateboarder, will show her artwork this month at Churchill School. Her fi rst chil- dren’s book, “Pepper and Frannie,” was published in March 2019. She is both author and illustrator. The art show will be a mix of fi gurative landscapes done with linocut and paper collage, some painted cuddly bears, some adven- turous critters, greeting cards and a skate-able installation to go with the book theme and illustrations. Odell’s childhood, according to her biography, “spanned the globe and helped her to develop an ap- preciation for all the different lives a person can live.” She worked as a product designer for Ziba Design, then played cello as a touring musician and now is back, literally, to the drawing board.
