LA GRANDE — Travelers head- ing up or down Cabbage Hill along Interstate 84 east of Pendleton can expect lane closures in the west- bound and eastbound lanes over the next few weeks. Shoulder pav- ing will begin the week of Sept. 30 in the westbound lanes, then shift to the eastbound lanes in a week or two. Motorists are advised to slow down and be prepared for single- lane travel. Depending on weather conditions, this work is expected to be completed around mid-October. The paving will seal the area where power cables were installed. Those wires will help provide elec- tricity to a dozen digital message boards, freeway lighting and other enhancements that are part of a $15 million I-84 Snow Zone Safety Improvements Project. The project includes new highway cameras, road sensors, curve warning signs, a new freeway ramp gate and other features that will improve safety, especially during the winter season. Construction and some lane closures will continue near the top of Cabbage Hill through October. The La Grande art center will consider all ideas for classes that explore a specific artis- tic, cultural or creative topic. ACE is always interested in diversifying its selection of courses, from visual arts to music, dance, cooking, writ- ing, traditional arts (like welding, blacksmithing, knitting, quilting and basket weaving), healing arts, digital arts and much more. Learn to parent with love and logic LA GRANDE — Parenting with Love and Logic, a seven-session class sponsored by the Union County Family Law Committee, will begin Oct. 9. Each Wednesday evening session will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Head Start Building at 1810 14th St., La Grande. The course teaches parent- ing ideas applicable to all ages of children. Parents will learn helpful ideas and practical strategies for setting limits, avoiding power struggles, taking the anger out of discipline, and handling chores, al- lowance, homework and meals. The class is facilitated by Mary Lu Pierce, educator, retired middle school counselor and mediator. The cost is $10 per person for the workbook. Child care is provided but limited. Translator TV viewers will not lose channels LA GRANDE — Blue Mountain Translator District has received several queries regarding the avail- ability of KATU (ABC Channel 2). The BMTD press release stated that DirecTV and U-Verse, both owned by AT&T, are in negotia- tions with the KATU station owner and may lose access to the chan- nel. The driving refresher course will be taught by Fred Moore, a certi- fied volunteer instructor. Course par- ticipants will learn defensive driving skills, safety strategies, how to stay current with driving technologies, the current rules of the road, and how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hear- ing and reaction time. Participants may be eligible for a multi-year insurance discount after taking the course. There are no tests required. The class is open to drivers of all ages. A Salem Police Department release says officers were called late Saturday for a man trespassing and causing a disturbance.
