THE OBSERVER, AUGUST 30, 2019 HELLS CANYON MULE DAYS PAGE 7 Max Walker Memorial Cowboy Poetry Gathering Local and visiting cowboy poets and musi- cians are on the line-up for the Hells Canyon Mule Days Max Walker Memorial Cowboy Gathering on Friday night September 6th starting at 6:00 pm, in the indoor arena at the Wallowa County Fair Grounds in Enterprise. Emcee, Andy Bales, a Wallowa County native t who presently resides in Enumclaw, Washington, started playing guitar at the age of nine with the Old Time Fiddlers Association and enjoys tradi- t tional western music. Marty Robbins and Sons of the Pioneers were his major infl uences. Andy t will head up the evening show with his unique r cowboy-fl avored music and poetry. You can sit and listen to cowboy tales and also k enjoy some toe-tapping traditional cowboy tunes. The evening line-up of poets and musician in- clude, Panhandle Cowboys, J B Barber and Dave Fulfs; Lonnie Shurtleff, the Eclectric Cowboy; musicians Suz Grandy and Tom Welch; fi ddle player Bailey Vernam, poet Jim Littlepage, and Texas born and bred country singer, Kristyn Har- ris, making a special appearance and giving you a preview of Saturday night’s concert at the OK t Theatre in downtown Enterprise. The Gathering is guaranteed to be an evening that is fun for the whole family. There isn’t admission charged for attending the Gathering, but suggested donations of $5.00 for adults will be accepted to support the Max Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund, so look for the big fi ve gallon cowboy hats and dig deep into your pockets to support this worthwhile cause. Enjoy some great traditional cowboy music and western poetry from some of the best entertainers from near and far... Performer’s CDs will be available for pur- chase during the Mule Days event at the Sour- ven-ear Booth and also on site Friday evening at the Cowboy Gathering. The Max Walker Memorial Fund was estab- lished in 2005 by Hells Canyon Mule Days, Inc. in the memory and honor of the late Max Walker. Max was one of the founding fathers of the Mule Days event and the driving force of this annual event for twenty years. To date the Mule Days board of directors has granted $41,000.00 in scholarships to Wallowa County high school students. The Scholarship Grants are funded through the Hells Canyon Mule Days event, the Walker family, and dona- tions from individuals who want to remember Max Walker and contribute to a Wallowa County student’s education.
