Learn the engraving art of

JOSEPH — Terri Rice will teach
“The Art of Scrimshaw” from 10
a.m. to noon Jan. 18 at the Josephy
Center for Arts and Culture, 409 N.
Main St., Joseph.
Scrimshaw is an engraving art
that originated in the early 1800s.
Originally the material used for
scrimshaw was whalebone and
whale teeth. It was created out of
the sheer boredom of endless hours
spent on whaling ships waiting for
that elusive whale to appear. As a
result, scrimshaw is mostly nauti-
cal themed and fairly intricate.
The cost is $40. Pre-registration
is required nine days before the
start of class. No experience is
necessary.
